Short answer: Some Apple TV users report that YouTube’s Home recommendations no longer refresh as they used to, or that refresh-related controls have disappeared. YouTube has not publicly confirmed a universal removal or a general recommendations-refresh bug. The key distinction is that reloading Home is not the same as making YouTube generate a completely different set of recommendations.
What Apple TV users are seeing
Reports describe a Home page that keeps showing similar videos, fewer recommendation shelves, missing categories, or long-press menus that no longer offer actions such as Not interested and Don’t recommend channel. Some users also report trouble navigating with the Siri Remote’s touch surface. These are user reports, not proof that YouTube permanently removed a refresh feature for everyone. The interface can vary with app and tvOS versions, account state, region, and server-side rollouts. Recent Apple TV user reports and reports of layout changes describe some of these differences.
YouTube’s official guide to using YouTube on a TV explains how to browse Home, Subscriptions, Search, and Library, but does not document a guaranteed Apple TV command to force a new standard Home recommendation set. This is about the regular YouTube app, not YouTube TV.
Three meanings of “refresh”
- Reload Home: The app fetches or redraws the page. It may still show many of the same videos.
- Regenerate recommendations: YouTube selects a different set of videos. There is no documented Apple TV control that guarantees this.
- Change what YouTube recommends: The system responds to account signals, including watch and search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, and feedback. Reloading the page does not erase those signals. YouTube’s recommendation guidance explains the role of these signals.
So an unchanged feed alone does not establish that the app failed. If the controls have vanished, long-press actions do not work, or navigation is unresponsive, a YouTube app or service issue becomes more plausible.

Try these steps, in order
- Leave Home and return. Open Subscriptions, Library, or Search, then return to Home and wait a few seconds. Some users have reported that this refreshes the displayed page, but it is an informal workaround, not a guaranteed fix. Earlier Apple TV reports describe this approach.
- Force-close YouTube. Press the TV button twice on the Siri Remote to open the app switcher, find YouTube, swipe up to close it, then reopen the app. This can clear a stale local screen state; it will not reset account recommendations.
- Check for an app update. Open the Apple TV App Store, search for YouTube, select the app, and choose Update if offered. If there is no Update option, YouTube says the app is already current. See YouTube’s update instructions.
- Restart Apple TV. Restart after updating, especially if the remote is not navigating YouTube properly. A separate Apple TV touchpad-navigation issue was marked fixed by TeamYouTube in May 2026, with restarting the YouTube app advised; follow-up comments indicate it did not resolve every user’s problem. That acknowledgement concerns navigation, not a confirmed recommendations-refresh defect. See the TeamYouTube notice.
- Test another profile or Guest mode. Switching profiles and switching back has reportedly changed what appeared on Home for some users. It may only reload cached content or change account context; it is not an official recommendation reset. User reports describe this workaround.
- Sign out and back in, if needed. First confirm which account is active and that you can sign in again. This can help with a session problem but does not promise a different feed.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. Deleting and reinstalling may repair corrupted local app state. It will not undo a server-side interface rollout or change the recommendation signals attached to your account.
Change the feed directly
If the goal is better recommendations rather than a freshly drawn screen, use YouTube’s feedback and history controls when they are available:
- Choose Not interested. Highlight an unwanted video and press and hold the remote’s select button. Choose Not interested; if offered, select Tell us why and choose a reason. The menu may not appear on every screen or during an interface problem. YouTube explains recommendation controls here.
- Choose Don’t recommend channel. Use this option when it appears to reduce recommendations from that channel.
- Check the active profile and history. Remove accidentally watched videos from watch history, particularly if someone else used the account or the wrong profile was active. Search history and other interactions also contribute to recommendations. If watch history is paused or there is little account history, Home may be substantially less personalized. - Use Subscriptions for new uploads. Home is a recommendation surface, not a complete list of new videos from channels you follow. YouTube’s TV guide identifies Subscriptions as the place to browse videos from subscribed channels. You can also search for a channel or topic directly.
YouTube supports linking a phone, tablet, or computer to its TV app for control and queues. That can be a useful alternative when Apple TV navigation is awkward, but it does not guarantee a different Home feed. YouTube’s TV guide covers linking and browsing.

Is this an Apple TV problem or normal personalization?
- Only YouTube has broken swipes or long-press actions: Suspect an app-specific input or navigation issue before blaming the remote or Apple TV hardware. Test the remote in other apps, then restart and update YouTube.
- Navigation works, but Home retains familiar videos: This can be normal. YouTube does not promise that each reload replaces every recommendation.
- The same recommendations appear on other devices too: Account-level history, profile selection, or YouTube’s recommendation system is more likely than an Apple TV-only refresh failure.
- Other devices work, but Apple TV controls or shelves do not: That points more toward an Apple TV app issue or a different interface rollout. The available user reports do not establish a universal or permanent change.
- Only certain shelves disappeared: A layout change or server-side experiment may be responsible. Reinstalling cannot necessarily reverse a change delivered by YouTube’s servers.
Do not confuse a sluggish or frozen interface with the recommendation system choosing similar videos. They are different problems and may need different remedies.

Report a persistent problem
If the issue continues, send feedback through the YouTube app or YouTube’s TV feedback page. Include your Apple TV model, tvOS and YouTube app versions, country or region, whether you are signed in, the remote type, and the exact control or screen that is missing. Note whether the problem happens on another profile or device too. This helps distinguish an input bug, an account-specific feed, and a TV-app interface issue.
