YouTube Premium Lite has been available in the U.S. since March 2025; the significant update is that, in 2026, it gained background play and downloads for most eligible videos. It can reduce interruptions on many documentaries and other non-music videos, but it does not make all of YouTube ad-free: music content, Shorts, and search and browsing surfaces may still show ads.
When did YouTube Premium Lite launch in the U.S.?
YouTube announced the U.S. expansion on March 5, 2025, describing it as an expansion of its Premium Lite pilot rather than an instant rollout to every account. The announcement listed Thailand, Germany, and Australia as pilot markets that would receive broader availability in the weeks ahead. The 2026 news is a feature expansion, not a new U.S. launch. On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced background play and offline downloads for most eligible Premium Lite videos, with the features rolling out over the following weeks in markets where the plan was available. YouTube’s 2026 feature announcement

Premium Lite is a narrower, lower-priced membership aimed at people who mainly watch ordinary YouTube videos. YouTube says it provides ad-free playback on most eligible videos, plus background play and downloads for most eligible videos. Eligible YouTube Kids videos are also covered.

“Most eligible” matters. Lite is not a promise of an uninterrupted experience across every video or every part of the app. Downloads are for offline viewing through YouTube, not permanent video files to export or keep independently of the service. Where can ads still appear?
YouTube says ads may still appear on music content and Shorts, as well as while you search or browse. Music exclusions include official or premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated videos containing material from YouTube music partners, such as covers, dance videos, or vlogs using popular songs. That makes “most non-music videos ad-free” a more accurate description than “ad-free YouTube.”

- Shorts: Shorts are outside Lite’s central ad-free promise and are not covered by the stated background-play and download benefits.
- Search and browsing: Ads can remain on these surfaces even if an eligible video plays without an ad.
- Creator promotions: Lite cannot remove sponsorships, product placements, affiliate mentions, or calls to action recorded into a video by its creator.
Does Lite include background play and downloads for every video?
No. YouTube limits both features to most eligible videos. Shorts and music content are excluded or restricted, including official or premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated videos containing music-partner material. So if you want to save a particular video for a flight or listen with your screen off, check whether it is eligible rather than assuming the feature applies to everything.
How much does Premium Lite cost?
YouTube announced a U.S. launch price of $7.99 per month in March 2025. That is the original price, not a confirmed current August 2026 rate. YouTube’s help page directs users to the signup flow for the applicable price, and conflicting secondary reports do not establish a definitive current U.S. amount. Check the price shown for your account and location at YouTube’s Premium Lite signup page before subscribing; rely on the checkout amount, including any offer or eligibility terms shown there.

Who is Premium Lite for?
Lite makes the most sense if most of your viewing is long-form, non-music video: documentaries, education, cooking, gaming, news, technology, comedy, or commentary. It may suit you if ads interrupt those videos, you rarely use YouTube for music, and you can accept that some content and app surfaces remain ad-supported.

It is a less compelling choice if you primarily watch Shorts, rely on music videos or YouTube Music, or need background play and downloads to work on a broad range of content. Viewers who want those broader benefits should compare the current full Premium price with the Lite checkout price rather than assuming a fixed discount.
How to sign up, upgrade, or cancel
Sign up for Premium Lite
- Open the Premium Lite signup page.
- Sign in to the Google account you want to use for the membership.
- Review the plan and the price shown for your account and location.
- Complete payment and confirm the membership.
Upgrade to full Premium
- Go to YouTube paid memberships.
- Select Manage Membership next to Premium Lite.
- Select Upgrade next to the desired Premium plan, then select Confirm.
Cancel Premium Lite
- Go to YouTube paid memberships and select Manage membership.
- Select Deactivate, then Continue to cancel.
- Choose a reason and select Next.
- Select Yes, cancel.
YouTube says availability is country-specific, so confirm that Lite appears for your account and location on the signup page. For recurring paid services, YouTube’s terms say price changes are subject to reasonable notice; see the paid-service terms.
