YouTube Premium Lite has returned in a revised form. The lower-priced membership now includes background playback and offline downloads for most eligible videos, but it is still not a completely ad-free version of YouTube. Ads and feature restrictions remain around music, Shorts, and some search and browsing surfaces.
That makes Premium Lite a credible budget option for people who mainly watch documentaries, explainers, news, tutorials, gaming and other creator-led videos—but a poor substitute for full YouTube Premium if YouTube is also your music service.
What changed in 2026?
YouTube announced the latest Premium Lite expansion on February 24, 2026. The company added background play and offline downloads for most qualifying videos, with the rollout taking place in markets where Premium Lite is available. The features work through the YouTube and YouTube Kids apps where those apps and benefits are supported.
This was not a brand-new subscription appearing from nowhere. YouTube had tested an earlier Lite tier in parts of Europe, discontinued that version in 2023, and revived the Premium Lite name during a wider 2025 rollout. The caveat: Lite is not fully ad-free
Premium Lite generally removes YouTube-served ads from most ordinary videos, but YouTube explicitly allows ads to remain in several important places:
- Music videos and other music content
- YouTube Shorts
- Search results
- Browsing and discovery pages
Music classification can be broader than a video being labelled “official music video.” YouTube says content containing music-partner material may be treated as music content, including some covers, dance videos and vlogs that use a popular song. Consequently, a video that looks like a normal creator upload may not receive every Lite benefit.
Premium also cannot necessarily remove a promotion read by the creator or built into the programme itself. That is part of the video, not a YouTube-served commercial inserted around it.
What Premium Lite includes
YouTube positions Lite between the free, ad-supported service and full YouTube Premium. It is intended for viewers who want fewer interruptions on most regular videos without paying for the complete package.

- Most creator, gaming, fashion, beauty, news, vlog, tutorial, cooking and educational videos with fewer or no YouTube-served ads.
- Background play for most eligible videos, allowing audio to continue when a supported mobile user switches apps or turns off the screen.
- Offline downloads for most eligible videos inside YouTube or YouTube Kids where available.
- Use across supported phones, computers and televisions, although individual features are not identical on every device.
“Most” and “eligible” matter. Shorts and music content are excluded from background playback and downloads, and rights-holder, account, device and regional restrictions can also apply. Downloads are an offline playback feature within YouTube; they are not permanent video files that can be opened in another player.
What it does not include
- YouTube Music Premium: music content can still contain ads, and Lite does not provide the full ad-free music service.
- Universal ad removal: Shorts, music, search and browsing surfaces may still show ads.
- Every background-playback and download use case: unsupported classifications and rights restrictions remain.
- Several full-Premium extras: YouTube lists features such as Continue watching, Jump ahead, queuing and higher-quality audio and video options among benefits not included with Lite.
- Equivalent household plans: standard Premium has family and two-person options; Premium Lite is documented as an individual monthly membership.

Full Premium is not automatically better value for every viewer. The difference depends on what you watch. Someone who mostly views documentaries and lectures may rarely encounter Lite’s exclusions. Someone who uses YouTube as a music player will encounter them constantly.
Price: check the offer on your account
YouTube does not publish one universal Premium Lite price. The official signup page, youtube.com/premiumlite, shows the offer available for your country and Google account.
The United States launch price in March 2025 was $7.99 per month. A report published in April 2026 said the US Lite price had risen to $8.99 per month, while the individual full-Premium price was reported at $15.99. Those figures are market- and date-specific, so confirm the checkout screen before subscribing; taxes and local pricing can change.

Where is Premium Lite available?
Premium Lite is offered in selected countries, not worldwide. YouTube’s current documentation lists markets including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam, among others. The list can change, and availability may vary by location, device, operating system and plan. Check YouTube’s current availability and travel guidance.
Do not use a VPN to pretend to be in another country. YouTube requires subscribers to represent their country accurately and says that circumventing availability restrictions can lead to cancellation.
Who should choose Premium Lite?
It is a good fit if you:
- Mostly watch non-music creator videos, documentaries, explainers, news or tutorials.
- Want fewer interruptions at a lower monthly price.
- Would use background audio for lectures, commentary or podcasts that are not classified as music.
- Need occasional offline viewing of ordinary videos.
- Do not need YouTube Music Premium and can tolerate ads in Shorts, music, search or browsing.
Full Premium is the better fit if you:
- Watch music videos frequently or use YouTube as a music service.
- Need screen-off playback for music or Shorts.
- Want the most consistent ad-free experience across YouTube.
- Care about full-Premium playback, quality or queueing features.
- Need a family or two-person subscription option.
How to subscribe, upgrade or cancel
Subscribe
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite.
- Sign in to the Google account that will own the membership.
- Review the local price, eligible benefits and payment terms.
- Complete YouTube’s checkout.
Upgrade to full Premium
Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships, select Manage membership beside Premium Lite, choose Upgrade, select the desired Premium plan and confirm. If you originally subscribed on the web or through Google Play, YouTube says the upgrade must be handled through the web membership-management page.

- Open youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage membership, then Deactivate.
- Choose Continue to cancel, select a reason and click Next.
- Select Yes, cancel.

Background play is unavailable? Confirm that the video is not a Short, music-related upload or content containing music-partner material, and that you are using a supported YouTube or YouTube Kids app in an eligible location.
There is no download button? Downloads are limited to eligible videos and can be blocked by music classification, rights-holder settings, regional availability, device or account limits, or a video later becoming private or unavailable.
Travelling? Benefits can change outside the signup country. YouTube says that if a destination does not support Premium Lite, benefits may be unavailable, while previously downloaded videos may remain available offline for up to 30 days. Membership is intended to be used predominantly in the country where it was purchased.

Premium Lite is now much more useful than the earlier version: background play and downloads make it a practical low-cost tier for ordinary video viewing. But the caveat defines the product. It is not “YouTube without ads”; it is “most regular videos without YouTube-served ads,” with music, Shorts, discovery surfaces and several premium extras left out. Choose Lite if those exclusions match your habits. Choose full Premium if music, Shorts or a consistently ad-free YouTube experience are essential.

Is YouTube Premium Lite fully ad-free?
No. Most regular videos are generally free of YouTube-served ads, but ads may appear on music content, Shorts, search results and browsing surfaces. Creator-read sponsorships embedded in a video may also remain.
