YouTube Premium Lite is a real subscription option in India, reported at ₹89 per month, but it does not make every part of YouTube ad-free. It removes ads from most non-music videos and now includes background play and downloads for most eligible videos. Ads can still appear on music content, Shorts and while searching or browsing, and Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium. Check the price and plan details shown for your account before subscribing.
What is YouTube Premium Lite?
Premium Lite is a lower-priced YouTube membership for people who mainly watch ordinary creator videos—such as tutorials, news, gaming, education and entertainment—and want fewer interruptions without paying for YouTube Music Premium. It is a limited plan, not full YouTube Premium at a lower price. YouTube’s Premium Lite help page sets out the included features and exceptions.
India’s initial rollout was reported in September 2025. YouTube announced background play and offline downloads for Lite on February 24, 2026, with rollout in available markets, including India, afterward. Older descriptions saying Lite has no background play or downloads may therefore be out of date. See the India launch report and YouTube’s feature announcement.
How much does Premium Lite cost in India?
Indian technology coverage reported the subscription at ₹89 per month at launch. Treat that as a reported price, not a permanent guarantee: YouTube directs users to its signup page for the price applicable to their account, and paid-service prices and offerings can change. Before paying, visit youtube.com/premiumlite and check the plan name, recurring charge, payment method and any taxes or promotion shown at checkout. “Most videos ad-free” is the useful shorthand; “all of YouTube ad-free” is not accurate. Ads may remain on official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs and user uploads containing music-partner content—for example, a cover, dance video or vlog using a popular song. Shorts are also excluded, and you may see ads on search or browsing screens even if the video you later play is eligible for ad-free viewing. These distinctions are described in YouTube’s Premium Lite guidance.
A membership also cannot remove sponsorships, product placements, affiliate pitches or other promotional material recorded or inserted by a creator as part of the video itself. Those are part of the upload rather than an ad break served by YouTube.

Downloads and background play apply to most eligible videos, not every upload. Eligibility can depend on the content, location and app or device conditions. Downloads are for offline viewing in YouTube’s apps; Lite does not turn them into ordinary files available for use elsewhere. YouTube’s feature guidance lists the exclusions.

The feature distinctions are based on YouTube’s plan guidance; the Lite launch price was reported by Business Standard in September 2025. Lite can be a sensible middle ground if most of your viewing is non-music creator content and you would use background play or downloads for eligible videos. Full Premium is more suitable if music videos are a regular part of your viewing, you use YouTube as a music service, or you expect broad ad removal across the service. Free YouTube may suit occasional viewers, or people whose viewing is mostly Shorts or music and who do not need offline access or background playback.
If you qualify for a student plan, compare its live price and full feature set directly rather than assuming it is equivalent to Lite; eligibility verification may apply. A family or multi-person option may suit qualifying household members, but Google’s paid-service terms set conditions for family-group membership. Compare available options at YouTube Premium; do not rely on an old price quote or share a plan outside its eligibility rules.

How to subscribe to Premium Lite
- Sign in to YouTube using the Google account you intend to use for viewing.
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite.
- Review the displayed price, billing details and included benefits. Confirm the plan is specifically Premium Lite, not full Premium or a student offer.
- Complete checkout, then open youtube.com/paid_memberships to verify that the membership is active on the correct account.
- Update the YouTube or YouTube Kids app if the new features are not visible. Test background playback with an eligible non-music video, then check whether an eligible video offers a Download control.
Availability and features can vary by country, device, operating system and billing method. If the offer does not appear, check the signed-in account’s country and membership page in a browser, make sure you are not already using a conflicting paid service, and update the app. An organization-managed account, family arrangement or third-party billing can affect what is offered. Do not use a VPN or misstate your location to get a plan: Google’s terms prohibit misrepresenting the signup country or circumventing geographic restrictions.

How to cancel
- Open youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage membership beside Premium Lite.
- Choose Deactivate, then Continue to cancel.
- Select a reason and choose Yes, cancel.
For a subscription managed directly through YouTube, cancellation normally prevents the next renewal while access remains through the current billing period. If you subscribed through Google Play, Apple or another intermediary, its cancellation and billing rules may apply. See YouTube’s membership guidance and paid-service terms.

Fix common Premium Lite problems
Ads still appear
First check whether you are watching a Short or music-related video, or seeing an ad on a search or browsing screen; those are among the stated exceptions. A creator-read sponsorship or product placement is part of the video and is not removed by the membership. If you believe an ordinary eligible video is showing a YouTube-served ad, verify that YouTube is signed in to the same account shown as active on your memberships page, and check that payment has not failed. Test a standard non-music long-form video.
Background play does not work
Test an eligible non-music video rather than a Short, confirm the subscribed account is active, and use the YouTube or YouTube Kids app. Update the app and check its background-play setting if available. YouTube lists the relevant feature exclusions on its help page.
The Download control is missing
The upload may be a Short, music-related or otherwise restricted by rights or eligibility conditions. Check another eligible video in the supported app. Do not use unofficial downloaders to bypass content restrictions.
The displayed price is not ₹89
Confirm that you selected Lite and that the account is billed in India. A different billing platform, applicable taxes, an expired promotion, changed pricing or a different account location may explain the amount. The checkout screen is the relevant price for that purchase; Google’s terms allow prices to change.
You are outside India or have moved
Do not assume an Indian subscription can be used indefinitely while living elsewhere. Google’s terms say Premium should be used in the country or territory where it was purchased and prohibit misrepresenting the signup country. A move may mean subscribing under the new location’s available plans and terms.
