YouTube Premium Lite is available to more US viewers, but this is better understood as an expansion of the 2025 US rollout than a brand-new product launch. Reporting in August 2026 puts the price at $8.99 per month, up from the original $7.99 pilot price. The plan removes ads from most regular YouTube and YouTube Kids videos, while ads can remain on music, Shorts, and search or browse pages.

What changed in the US?
YouTube first expanded its Premium Lite pilot to US viewers in March 2025 at $7.99 per month. The 2026 news concerns broader availability, updated features or pricing—not necessarily a separate nationwide launch. YouTube says Premium Lite is available only in selected locations, and eligibility can vary by account. Its support page directs users to the Premium Lite help page and the signup page for current availability.

The original US rollout was advertised at $7.99 monthly. US price reporting in 2026 indicates $8.99 per month, but YouTube’s support documentation does not publish one universal price. Taxes, promotions, billing channel and future changes can affect what you see. Review the amount shown at signup, particularly if subscribing through Apple’s App Store or Google Play rather than the web. The reported increase is covered by TechRadar.

What Premium Lite includes
Fewer ads on ordinary videos
Premium Lite generally removes YouTube-served ads from most conventional, non-music videos, including tutorials, news, gaming, education, commentary, reviews and entertainment. YouTube Kids videos are also covered where eligible.
Background playback
Background playback works for most eligible videos when the YouTube app is minimized or your phone screen is off. YouTube added this benefit after the initial US offering; see its background-play and downloads announcement.

Offline downloads
You can download most eligible videos and playlists for offline viewing. Neither background playback nor downloads applies universally, and both are restricted for Shorts and music-related content.

Where ads and restrictions remain
Music content
Music is Premium Lite’s most important exclusion. Ads may appear on official and premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, covers, dance videos, and user-created videos containing music supplied by YouTube’s music partners. Someone who mainly uses YouTube as a music service will likely find Lite frustrating.

Shorts and navigation
Shorts can still contain ads. Advertising may also appear in search results and while browsing, even when an eligible video itself starts without an ad. Premium Lite therefore does not make the entire YouTube interface ad-free.
Creator sponsorships
The membership addresses ads served by YouTube. It does not automatically remove sponsorships, product placements or promotions recorded inside a creator’s video.

Lite also omits benefits such as Continue Watching, Jump ahead, queuing and high-quality audio or video. YouTube lists the current feature differences on its comparison and support page.

Premium Lite is a strong fit for
- People who mainly watch long-form, non-music videos.
- Podcast, lecture and commentary viewers who want background playback.
- Viewers who want downloads for ordinary videos at a lower price than full Premium.
- Individual users who do not need YouTube Music Premium.
Premium Lite is a weak fit for
- Heavy YouTube Music or music-video listeners.
- People who mostly watch Shorts.
- Anyone expecting every page and video to be ad-free.
- Families seeking multi-user access; do not assume a family plan is offered.
Important account and device limits
Premium and Premium Lite members can stream video or audio on only one device at a time, according to YouTube’s streaming-limits documentation. That limit is separate from any family-sharing option. Features can also roll out unevenly. If background play or downloads are missing, update the YouTube app, confirm the intended Google account is active, test a non-Shorts, non-music video and check youtube.com/paid_memberships.

How to sign up, upgrade or cancel
Sign up
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite.
- Sign in to the Google account that will use the membership.
- Review the displayed price, eligibility, payment terms and benefits.
- Complete payment and confirm the membership under Paid memberships.
Upgrade to full Premium
For memberships billed on the web or through Google Play, open youtube.com/paid_memberships, choose Manage Membership beside Premium Lite, select Upgrade, pick a Premium plan and confirm. Apple-billed memberships can require Apple’s account controls.
Cancel
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships and select Manage membership.
- Select Deactivate, then Continue to cancel.
- Choose a reason, select Next, and confirm with Yes, cancel.
Check the renewal date first and verify when benefits end. Trials require a payment method and renew at the then-current recurring price unless canceled before the trial ends; see YouTube’s trial guidance.
Other official options
- Full YouTube Premium: Choose this if you need ad-free music videos, YouTube Music Premium or the complete Premium feature set. Details are at youtube.com/premium.
- Google AI Pro: YouTube says Premium Lite can be included with Google AI Pro in supported markets. Compare the bundle at Google’s AI plans page and review account-management details at YouTube’s membership help. 2026 reporting placed AI Pro at $19.99 monthly, but verify live pricing and included benefits.
- YouTube Music Premium: This is a music-focused subscription at music.youtube.com/paid_memberships, not a replacement for Lite’s video-ad benefits.
- Free YouTube: The no-cost tier remains sensible for casual viewers who can tolerate ads: youtube.com.
Verdict
Premium Lite is a useful middle tier for viewers who mainly watch ordinary YouTube videos and want fewer interruptions, background playback or downloads. It is not the right plan for anyone expecting ad-free music, Shorts, search and browsing, or the full YouTube Premium experience.
