YouTube Premium prices are rising in the United States and multiple other markets, but there is no single worldwide increase or common start date. In the U.S., the individual plan is moving from $13.99 to $15.99 a month and the family plan from $22.99 to $26.99. Elsewhere, prices and affected plans vary, so the amount and timing shown in your own YouTube account are the most useful guide.
The confirmed U.S. price changes
YouTube’s U.S. increase, reported on April 10, 2026, is the first U.S. price rise since 2023, according to Reuters. The updated prices reported for the two main plans are:

That adds $24 a year for one individual subscriber, or $48 a year for a family-plan account, if the plan is kept for 12 months at the new rate. The family plan can include up to six people, but members must meet YouTube’s household-residence rules; it is not a general-purpose plan for friends living at separate addresses. YouTube said the new pricing supports continued investment in the service and creators and artists, as reported by TheWrap. That is the company’s explanation, not a breakdown of the costs behind the increase.

Why the increase is not the same everywhere
YouTube prices memberships by market. The U.S. change does not establish a new price or effective date for subscribers elsewhere. In other countries, increases may affect different plans at different times; local taxes, market conditions, currencies, plan availability, and the billing platform can all matter. YouTube says price updates may reflect factors such as market conditions, inflation, and local tax changes, and directs members to their account for their applicable price (YouTube’s price-change policy).
There is no reliable universal country list or one date on which every subscriber should expect a higher bill. YouTube’s country availability page is useful for checking which plans are offered in a market, but your membership details and YouTube’s email notice determine what applies to your subscription. Avoid treating converted U.S. dollar figures or third-party price tables as official local prices.

How to check your price and next bill
- Sign in to the Google account you use for YouTube Premium.
- Open YouTube and select your profile or account menu.
- Choose Purchases and memberships.
- Open your YouTube Premium membership details.
- Check the recurring price, next billing date, plan type, billing platform, and any message asking you to accept a price change.
Labels can vary somewhat by device or account. YouTube identifies Purchases and memberships as the place to check recurring price and billing information. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, check the subscription and amount shown by that platform as well: third-party billing, taxes, or other applicable charges can mean the total differs from a direct YouTube signup price (YouTube paid-service terms).
When will existing subscribers pay the new rate?
The announcement date is not necessarily the date of your first higher charge. YouTube says it generally emails affected members at least 30 days before a price increase. Existing subscribers are charged the new monthly rate in the first billing cycle that occurs at least 30 days after the plan price increases. Because billing cycles differ, subscribers on the same plan may see the change on different dates. Paused memberships are charged at the new price when resumed. In some countries, members may need to acknowledge or accept the change to continue; any required action should appear in the membership details. See YouTube’s price-change guidance.

YouTube Premium versus Premium Lite
Full YouTube Premium combines fewer interruptions across supported YouTube viewing with offline downloads, background play, and YouTube Music Premium benefits. It does not guarantee the removal of every promotion a creator has inserted into a video. YouTube’s Premium page lists the current plan features.
YouTube announced Premium Lite at $7.99 a month in the United States as a lower-priced option, but it is not full Premium at a discount. Its ad reduction applies to many general videos, while ads may still appear with music, Shorts, and while browsing or searching. Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium, downloads, or background play. Availability and features vary by country; check the official availability page before counting on it.

Other legitimate ways to lower the bill
Compare an annual plan, if offered
YouTube sells prepaid annual individual plans in selected markets, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Thailand, and Turkey. Annual memberships are not multi-person plans. Availability and terms can change; YouTube says current subscribers generally need to cancel recurring membership and then sign up for an annual plan, with annual access starting after the current billing period ends. Compare the actual annual price in your market with 12 monthly payments before assuming it saves money. Details are in YouTube’s annual-plan help page.
Choose a plan that matches how you watch
Premium Lite may suit someone who mainly watches ordinary long-form videos and does not need music, downloads, or background play. Free YouTube with ads is the no-subscription option, but it gives up Premium features. If music is the main reason for subscribing, a music-focused service such as Spotify Premium or Apple Music may be worth comparing; neither replaces ad-free YouTube video. Netflix is a different category—scripted and licensed films and series, not YouTube creators, tutorials, or livestreams.

Why switching your account to another country is risky
Do not rely on a VPN or false location details to obtain another country’s price. YouTube requires members to represent their country accurately and says the membership should be used predominantly in the country where it was purchased. Some markets require a locally issued payment method; travel or a move can affect benefits or require a subscription in the new country. See YouTube’s guidance on availability, payment methods, and membership restrictions. Ordinary travel is not the same as deliberately misrepresenting where you live.
If you cancel
Canceling normally stops future recurring charges while access continues through the end of the paid billing period. Check your account for the exact end date and access status. If you cancel after receiving a price-change notice and later rejoin, YouTube says the signup price then shown applies; check it before confirming. Is YouTube Premium still worth it?
Full Premium is easiest to justify if you watch YouTube frequently, use background play or downloads, listen to YouTube Music, or share an eligible family plan with people in the same household. The value is weaker if you watch only occasionally, mostly watch Shorts or music, do not use the extra features, or are paying for a family plan without eligible household members using it.

Premium Lite may cover some video-first viewers’ needs where it is available, but its ad limits and missing features matter. Compare the features you actually use with the charge shown in your account—not just the headline price.
