If YouTube Premium downloads are missing, stuck, or will not play offline, first check that you are using the right app and Google Account. YouTube downloads eligible videos inside the YouTube app; music downloads belong in YouTube Music. Neither app saves a normal MP3 or video file to your phone’s gallery. Then check the title, connection, storage, membership, and device limit—in that order, and do not reinstall before checking the limit.
Start with the symptom
“Download not working” can mean several different things: the button is missing, a download stalls, only one title fails, or an old download will not play. Try a second, ordinary public video or song. If that works, the failure is likely specific to the first title or its availability; if nothing works, check the account, connection, storage, and device authorization.
- Trying to save a YouTube video: Use the YouTube app or, on a computer, a supported browser. Eligible videos are saved for playback within YouTube.
- Trying to save a song or album: Use YouTube Music and its Downloads area. A YouTube Premium download does not create an audio file.
- Looking for an MP3, MP4, or gallery item: That is not how YouTube offline downloads work. They are app-controlled, encrypted, and meant to play inside YouTube. YouTube’s offline FAQ explains the distinction.
If YouTube videos will not download
Confirm the account and membership
In the YouTube mobile app, open Profile picture → Settings → Purchases and memberships. Make sure the account shown there is the one with an active Premium membership. Family-plan members can easily be signed into a different Google Account from the one invited to the plan. If the subscription is billed through Apple or another account, verify that the account currently open in YouTube has the entitlement.

YouTube notes that after a recently expired membership is renewed, saved videos may take several hours to reappear; try the download again after that interval. Check whether the title is eligible
Premium does not make every video downloadable. A video may have been removed, made private, blocked, restricted, or become unavailable for offline playback because of licensing or regional changes. If one title fails but another downloads, avoid resetting the app: the problem may be that title, not your account.
Playlists can also change after you save them, so test the exact item rather than assuming a playlist download guarantees that every current item remains available. If the video streams but will not download, it may still be ineligible for offline playback.
Verify the download path
- Sign in to the Premium account and open an eligible video’s watch page.
- Tap Download below the video and wait for the download indicator to change.
- Find the saved video under Profile picture → Downloads.
On a computer, YouTube says Premium members can download videos from YouTube.com in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera. Open the left-side Downloads menu to view them; they are not placed in the computer’s regular Downloads folder. If YouTube Music songs will not download
Make sure you are in the YouTube Music app, not only the YouTube video app. Open the Library’s Downloads area (the exact label can vary by app version), then try downloading one song manually before testing an album or playlist. Check the app’s Wi-Fi-only setting, available device storage, and whether Smart Downloads are enabled; turn Smart Downloads off temporarily if you want to test a specific item.
Offline music remains tied to the app, account, subscription, and periodic online checks. Do not look for a missing song in Files, Finder, Photos, or the phone gallery: the YouTube app does not export standalone audio or MP3 files. If you have Premium Lite, check the plan terms in your country. YouTube’s 2026 announcement describes downloads and background play for most eligible content, while full Premium remains the option for offline access that includes music content and YouTube Music Premium; availability and content eligibility vary by market and rollout. Fix a stuck or slow download
Test the network and data permissions
- Switch to reliable Wi-Fi and retry the download. YouTube gives 3 Mbps or faster as a baseline for downloads, not a guarantee that every video quality will work at that speed.
- If you need cellular data, check that YouTube is allowed to use cellular and background data in the phone’s settings.
- Temporarily disable device-level Data Saver or Low Data Mode, and confirm YouTube is not set to download on Wi-Fi only.
- For a download stuck at 0%, keep the app open briefly during a small test download. If the connection dropped, reconnect; YouTube says progress can resume after reconnection.

Free storage and reduce quality
Low storage can stop a download or make it look frozen. Delete downloads you no longer need, free device storage, and retry one short video before starting a large playlist. Higher download quality uses more space and data and can take longer to appear in Downloads.

Check device limits before reinstalling
YouTube says Premium and YouTube Music Premium offline features can be used on up to 10 devices at a time. Once that limit is reached, authorizing a new device can de-authorize the oldest one. YouTube allows up to four device swaps in one year; after the fourth, downloads on a new device can be blocked until the limit resets. A common warning is “Sorry, this video can’t be taken offline.” Details are in YouTube’s device-limit policy.

Do not delete and reinstall YouTube as an early fix. YouTube counts reinstalling as a new device registration, which can use the same device-limit and annual-swap allowance you may need later. If downloads work on an old phone but not a new one, first check that both use the right account and consider device authorization. Remove downloads from devices you no longer use where the account interface allows it; if you believe the account is incorrectly locked out, contact YouTube paid support, without assuming it can reset the limit.
When an existing download stops playing
Offline downloads are not permanent files. YouTube requires periodic online checks so it can confirm that the video is still available and that the account remains entitled to play it. YouTube says many Premium downloads can play offline for up to 29 days; in some countries or regions, the check is required after 48 hours. Its iPhone and iPad guidance describes reconnection every 48 hours, with a 29-day exception for non-music content in some countries. These periods depend on platform, region, and content, so there is no single expiry window for every download. See the Android offline guidance and iOS offline guidance.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Open YouTube or YouTube Music and confirm you are signed into the same Premium account used to download the item.
- Open Downloads and allow the app to synchronize.
- If the title is now unavailable, verify the account and device first; only then delete that failed item and try downloading it again.
Use Smart Downloads only for automatic picks
Smart Downloads are not the same as manually selecting a particular video. On Android, open YouTube → Profile picture → Downloads → Menu → Settings → Smart Downloads. The feature needs an internet connection to start and can stop when the connection is lost or storage is low. YouTube says its automatically selected videos are replaced every seven days, so the exact video you expect may not be there. To check one specific video, download it manually. Escalate in a safe order
After confirming the account, title, connection, storage, and device limit, work through these steps from least disruptive to most disruptive:
- Retry the download and test a different video or song.
- Update YouTube or YouTube Music through your device’s official app store, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Sign out and back in with the Premium account.
- Delete only the failed download and try again after confirming the title remains available.
- On Android, clear the app cache if appropriate for your device.
- Reinstall only after considering that reinstalling counts as a new device registration.
Clearing cache, changing DNS, using a VPN, or reinstalling is not a universal fix. If the problem remains, contact YouTube paid support and include the Google Account used for Premium, YouTube versus YouTube Music, device model and operating-system version, app version, exact error text, whether all titles fail or only one, whether existing downloads or only new downloads are affected, and whether you are on Wi-Fi or cellular. This helps distinguish a title restriction, account entitlement problem, device-limit lockout, and local app issue.
