Yes—but it was a partial outage, not a confirmed total shutdown. On Friday, June 6, 2025, users across the United States reported that YouTube’s website would not load, video previews were missing, or playback was unusually slow. Other users could still access the service, and the Android app appeared unaffected in the initial coverage.
This report concerns the June 6, 2025 incident. It should not be read as confirmation that YouTube is experiencing the same outage now.
What happened to YouTube?
The reported disruption began at approximately 1 p.m. Eastern Time on June 6, 2025. User reports and DownDetector activity indicated that YouTube was not working normally for everyone, but access varied considerably by user, device, and feature.
Some people could not load YouTube’s website at all. Others could open the site but saw missing video previews or experienced slow playback. More than 5,000 outage reports were cited at the time, but that figure represented reports—not a verified count of unique affected users.

Was YouTube down for everyone?
No evidence in the initial coverage supported a complete global outage. The more accurate description is a partial, uneven disruption affecting some users and functions while others retained access.

| Reported symptom | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| The website would not load | A website, regional, routing, or platform-side problem |
| Video previews were missing | A failure affecting a specific YouTube feature rather than the entire service |
| Videos loaded slowly | A possible platform, ISP, or network-routing problem |
| The Android app worked | The website and app may have been using different client paths or infrastructure |
| Repeated refreshes did not help | The problem may have been outside the user’s browser session |
A partial outage can affect the homepage, search, previews, authentication, playback, uploads, live streams, or individual device types differently. A working app does not rule out a website outage, just as a working website does not rule out a device-specific problem.

The initial coverage said YouTube’s Android application appeared unaffected. That wording matters: it does not mean every Android user had working playback, and it does not establish that iPhone, iPad, smart-TV, console, or YouTube TV users were unaffected.

Different clients can use different caching, authentication, delivery, and feature systems. Therefore, testing YouTube on another device can help identify the scope of a problem, but it cannot by itself establish the cause.
Was the outage caused by ad blockers?
Reports of the outage appeared around the same time as reports that YouTube was showing more warnings to users running ad blockers. However, the available coverage did not establish a connection between the two events.

A black player accompanied by a message specifically referring to ad blocking is different from a website that fails to load, missing previews, or slow playback across multiple connections. Do not treat disabling an ad blocker as a verified fix for this incident.

| Symptom | More likely explanation | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube and other sites fail | Local network or ISP issue | Open other websites and try cellular data |
| YouTube fails in one browser only | Cache, extension, or session problem | Use a private window or another browser |
| The website fails but the app works | Website- or client-specific issue | Try the YouTube app |
| The app fails on one device only | Device, app, or account issue | Test another device or account |
| Videos load but previews do not | Partial feature failure | Try search, a direct video link, or the app |
| A black player shows an ad-blocker warning | Policy or extension enforcement | Read the warning instead of assuming a general outage |
| Playback is slow everywhere | Platform, ISP, or routing problem | Switch networks and lower video quality |
What affected users could try
- Check another website. If multiple major services fail, the problem may be local or related to your internet provider.
- Switch connections. Compare Wi-Fi with cellular data or another network. This can reveal a DNS, ISP, or routing issue.
- Try another browser or device. A private browser window, the YouTube app, or another device can show whether the failure is limited to one client.
- Do not keep refreshing indefinitely. Repeated refreshes did not appear to resolve the reported June 6 incident.
- Check YouTube’s support channels. YouTube directs users to its Known Issues and Help resources for active problems.
- Send feedback if the problem continues. On desktop, sign in, select your profile picture, choose Send feedback, describe the issue, optionally attach a screenshot, and submit it.
On smart TVs, Chromecast devices, and game consoles, open YouTube, go to a video’s Settings menu, choose Feedback, select a reason, and submit the report.
What was known—and what was not
Known from the initial reporting
- Reports came from users across the United States.
- The website failed for some users.
- Some users reported missing previews or slow playback.
- Other users could still access and watch videos.
- The Android app appeared unaffected in the initial report.
- DownDetector and social-media reports indicated elevated user complaints.
Not confirmed
- The technical root cause.
- The exact number of affected users.
- The full geographic footprint.
- A definitive resolution time at publication.
- Whether a particular backend subsystem had failed.
- Any causal link to YouTube’s ad-blocker warnings.
The Google Cloud Service Health dashboard is not a complete consumer YouTube status monitor. Even a lack of broad Google Cloud incidents would not prove that every YouTube feature was operating normally.
Bottom line
YouTube did experience a real but unevenly reported disruption on June 6, 2025. The evidence supports calling it a partial outage affecting some websites, previews, and playback sessions—not a universal shutdown. The initial coverage did not confirm a cause, and it did not establish that ad blockers were responsible.
