If the YouTube app on your Apple TV will not open, play videos, sign in, or respond, first check YouTube on another device and try another app on the Apple TV. If the problem is limited to YouTube on the Apple TV, force-quit the app, restart the device, update tvOS and YouTube, then reinstall the app if needed. If other apps fail too, investigate the network; if YouTube fails on every device, it may be a service-side problem. These steps are for the YouTube app on Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K—not the separate YouTube TV service.
First, work out where the problem is
Before changing settings, run two quick checks: open YouTube on a phone, computer, or another TV, and try another streaming app on the same Apple TV. If practical, you can also connect the Apple TV to a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to see whether the problem follows the device or the home network.

A message that says “no internet” does not always mean the whole Apple TV is offline: if other apps work, YouTube’s own connection or sign-in path may be the issue.
Force-quit and reopen YouTube
- Press the Siri Remote’s TV button twice quickly to open the app switcher.
- Navigate to YouTube.
- Swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface to close the selected app.
- Return to the Home Screen and open YouTube again.
Pressing the TV button once does not necessarily quit the app. Apple recommends force-quitting an app when it is not working correctly; see its Apple TV app instructions.

Restart Apple TV
A restart clears temporary app or system state without erasing your accounts and settings. Use whichever method is available:
- Settings: Open Settings → System → Restart.
- Siri Remote: Press and hold the TV button and Back button until the status light flashes rapidly.
- Power: Disconnect Apple TV from power, wait at least five seconds, then reconnect it.

Check the network connection
- On Apple TV, open the network settings and confirm that it is connected to the Wi-Fi network you expect.
- If multiple devices or apps are having trouble, restart the modem and router. This briefly disconnects every device on that network.
- Move the Apple TV or router away from enclosed cabinets, metal objects, and other likely sources of Wi-Fi interference. If possible, test closer to the router.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, games, and other streams temporarily to see whether playback improves.
- If available, test with Ethernet or another Wi-Fi network. If YouTube works on the alternate connection, focus on the original router or Wi-Fi path.
YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming, but this is guidance, not a guarantee: congestion, signal stability, interference, latency, and other devices sharing the connection can still cause trouble. Its TV playback troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the connection and reducing network interference.

Update YouTube and tvOS
Install available updates before moving to more disruptive fixes. To check tvOS, open Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version.

To check YouTube, open the App Store on Apple TV and look for an available update for the app. You can also enable automatic app updates in Apple TV settings. YouTube recommends updating the device’s system software when TV playback problems persist. Apple’s tvOS 26 user guide covers Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K; supported features and update availability vary by model and region. It does not establish which point release is newest for your particular device.
Fix sign-in and activation problems
If videos will not play only after you sign in, or an activation code is rejected, refresh the account session:
- Open YouTube and select your profile picture.
- Open the account-management area and sign out.
- Select Sign in and follow the on-screen sign-in or activation steps.
If the problem persists, test another account or Guest mode if the app offers it. If another account works, the issue is more likely tied to the original account or its access than to the Apple TV’s network. For managed accounts, Brand Accounts, or account-specific restrictions, use Google’s account help rather than changing security settings speculatively. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance includes signing out and back in.

Offload or reinstall the YouTube app
Apple TV does not generally offer a universal button to clear an individual app’s cache. Offloading or deleting the app is the practical way to refresh its installation.

- Highlight YouTube on the Home Screen.
- Press and hold the clickpad or touch surface.
- Select Delete App.
- Choose Offload or Delete, then reinstall YouTube from the App Store.
Offload removes the app but retains its data; Delete removes both the app and its data. If you suspect damaged local app data, deleting and reinstalling is the more thorough option, but you may need to sign in again. Apple explains the options in its app installation and deletion guide. Reinstalling cannot repair a YouTube outage, account restriction, incompatible model, or network fault.
If YouTube plays but buffers
Buffering is a playback and connection symptom, so focus on the stream and network rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
- Try another video to see whether the problem affects one item or all playback.
- Lower the playback quality in YouTube. A lower resolution needs less bandwidth, at the cost of image detail.
- Pause other network-heavy activity and test the Apple TV closer to the router, over Ethernet, or on another network.
- If several apps buffer, restart the router. If only YouTube buffers, the particular stream, app, or route to YouTube may be involved.
If only a live stream is affected, congestion or the stream’s broadcast-delay behavior may matter. For supported live programming, YouTube describes a Broadcast Delay option: Default is intended to minimize interruptions, while Decrease aims to reduce delay and may increase interruptions. The control is not available for every live stream; see YouTube’s playback guidance.
If the picture is black or you see an HDMI/HDCP error
These checks are for a black picture, missing video with audio, or an HDMI/HDCP warning—not ordinary buffering or sign-in failures.

- Restart Apple TV and confirm that the television is on the correct input.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable; try another HDMI input and, if possible, another cable.
- Connect Apple TV directly to the television, bypassing an AV receiver, HDMI switch, soundbar, or capture device.
- If direct connection fixes the picture, investigate the bypassed receiver or switch and check for relevant firmware updates.

Check whether the Apple TV model is supported
These instructions apply to Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Older Apple TV hardware may not support current tvOS features or app versions, and compatibility can vary by model and region. If YouTube is missing from the App Store or cannot be updated, confirm the exact Apple TV model and the app’s availability for your region rather than assuming that every device called Apple TV can install the current app. Apple’s user guide describes the supported Apple TV generations and notes that features and content vary.
Reset only after the reversible fixes
If multiple apps or Apple TV functions remain broken after network checks, updates, and a restart, a reset may be a last software troubleshooting step. It erases accounts, configuration, and other data, so do not use it just to address a likely YouTube outage or a single sign-in problem. Review Apple’s reset instructions before proceeding and be prepared to set the device up again.

- YouTube fails on several devices: Wait and retry if a service-side problem is likely; use YouTube’s help and feedback options for an account or service issue.
- Only Apple TV has trouble, but other apps work: Contact YouTube if the app, account, or playback issue persists after the app steps.
- Several Apple TV apps fail, or HDMI and system problems remain: Contact Apple for help with tvOS, the device, or its connection to the television.
If the native app remains unavailable, watch on another supported device, use a supported casting method, or connect a computer to the TV by HDMI. YouTube lists these as alternatives in its TV playback guidance.
Make sure you mean YouTube, not YouTube TV
YouTube and YouTube TV are separate apps and services. If the problem is with YouTube TV, use its separate troubleshooting guide; the sign-in and playback steps may differ.
