It was announced on February 10, 2026, as a rolling Premium feature for Android and iOS. The update makes YouTube Music more competitive with Spotify’s Prompted Playlist, but it is not, by itself, a reason for every Spotify user to switch.
The important qualifications are availability and control: Google has not established that every Premium account or country has the feature, and launch reporting did not confirm YouTube Music options for editing a prompt, refreshing a playlist or setting a universal playlist length.
What YouTube Music’s AI Playlist actually does
AI Playlist is a prompt-to-playlist tool. You tell YouTube Music what you want, either by typing or speaking, and it generates a playlist based on that request. It is different from an AI radio feature: the announcement describes a playlist created from a prompt, not an ongoing narrated station, beat-matched DJ set or conversational host.
Prompts work best when they describe several useful constraints at once:

- “Calm instrumental jazz for reading on a rainy evening.”
- “A workout playlist that starts mellow and gradually gets intense.”
- “Dark electronic music without vocals for focused work.”
For a more precise request, include the era, subgenre, activity, energy level, vocal preference, explicit-content preference and artists to include or avoid. For example: “Create a 90-minute instrumental post-rock playlist for deep work, starting calm and becoming more energetic, with no vocals and no film scores.” Negative instructions can be misunderstood, so inspect the results rather than assuming every exclusion worked.
How to create an AI Playlist
The reported mobile creation path is:
- Update YouTube Music from the relevant app store.
- Sign in to the Google account that has the eligible membership.
- Open YouTube Music on Android or iOS.
- Tap Library.
- Tap New.
- Choose AI Playlist.
- Type a prompt or use voice input.
- Submit it and review the generated tracks.
The launch report did not fully document playlist length, post-generation editing, refresh behavior or every save control. If your interface offers a save or library button, use it; otherwise, treat the generated list as an account-specific implementation that may change during the rollout. The feature was announced as rolling out, not as universally enabled.
AI Playlist versus Spotify Prompted Playlist
Spotify already offers prompt-based playlist creation, so YouTube Music is matching an established capability rather than inventing a new category. The practical differences are more useful than a claim that one service is universally better.

The comparison is based on reported feature descriptions, not a controlled test of recommendation quality. There is no evidence here that AI Playlist consistently produces more relevant songs than Spotify’s tool.

Why Spotify users may care about the update
Less manual playlist work
Someone planning a trip, workout or study session can describe the situation instead of searching song by song. That is most valuable when the desired result is a specific combination of mood, era and activity.
A broader YouTube music ecosystem
YouTube Music combines conventional audio with music videos, live performances, covers, remixes and regional or unofficial uploads that may not appear in Spotify’s official catalog. A generated list can therefore lead to versions of songs that are difficult to find in a more tightly controlled service. That breadth is also a liability: inspect whether the result is the official recording, a video, a live take, a cover or a remix.
One subscription for YouTube and music
YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits as well as ad-free YouTube and other YouTube features. For someone already paying for ad-free video, AI Playlist is an additional reason to use the included music service rather than maintain two subscriptions.
Why it may not be enough to leave Spotify
Spotify remains the safer choice for listeners whose routines depend on polished library management, collaborative playlists, Spotify Connect, mature queue handling and discovery products such as Discover Weekly, Release Radar and Daily Mixes. Audiobooks, podcasts and Spotify-specific social functions can also make a complete migration inconvenient.

YouTube Music’s AI Playlist controls are less documented at launch. If you require prompt editing or a predictable refresh workflow, Spotify’s reported support for those actions is a meaningful advantage. Generated lists can also contain duplicates, familiar artists or tracks that only loosely match a request, so do not rely on one without checking the opening results for a party, workout or long drive.
Who gets AI Playlist?
Launch coverage describes AI Playlist as Premium-only. YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused paid tier; YouTube Premium includes those music benefits plus ad-free YouTube. YouTube’s help documentation lists Premium benefits such as ad-free music, background playback, audio-only playback and downloads, while noting that experiences can differ by country and that some features are unavailable on supervised accounts: YouTube Music Premium help.
February 2026 US price signals reported by 9to5Google were $10.99 per month for YouTube Music Premium and $13.99 per month for YouTube Premium. Those are dated US figures, not guaranteed global or permanent prices; billing platform, taxes, plan type, promotions and later changes can alter the checkout total. As of August 18, 2026, the available evidence does not establish access for every Premium account, country or client. A UK Premium user’s February community report described the option missing on iOS, but that post is anecdotal rather than an official availability statement: Google support community report.

Try these practical checks, without assuming any one will force activation:
- Confirm the account has YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium.
- Update the YouTube Music app.
- Check the correct Google account and look under Library → New.
- Sign out and back in, then force-close and reopen the app.
- Compare the Android or iOS app with the web version; the reported creation path is specifically mobile.
- Check country and account eligibility, including whether the account is supervised.
- Do not assume sideloading an APK or changing location will enable a server-side feature.
- If it is still absent, wait for the rollout or send feedback through YouTube Music.
Other 2026 changes that are not AI Playlist
Several nearby updates can be confused with this announcement. Queue syncing across Android, iOS and the web began rolling out in January 2026; the latest signed-in play session can update or override an existing queue (queue-sync report). Reports of lyrics limits for some ad-supported users described a small experiment, including a reported five-view allowance before more lyrics were blurred; Google told Android Authority that most global users would not see changes (lyrics experiment report). AI-generated lyric-sharing backgrounds are a separate sharing feature, not playlist generation.
Which service fits your listening habits?
Choose YouTube Music AI Playlist when
- You already pay for YouTube Premium.
- You want music videos, live versions, covers, remixes or regional uploads.
- You often build playlists around a situation or vibe.
- You prefer a broader YouTube catalog to a more controlled music-only environment.
Stay with Spotify when
- Collaborative playlists, folders and sharing are central to your routine.
- You rely on Spotify Connect across speakers, cars, televisions and computers.
- You value established discovery and editorial playlist systems.
- You use Spotify’s podcast, audiobook or social ecosystem.
- You need prompt editing and refresh controls that YouTube Music has not documented.
Use both temporarily when
- You already need YouTube Premium for video but still depend on Spotify collaboration or device control.
- You want to test AI-generated recommendations before moving your full library.
- You listen to different kinds of content on each service.
Playlist-transfer services such as TuneMyMusic and Soundiiz can help with migration, but unavailable tracks, duplicate versions, regional licensing and transfer limits can affect the result.
Verdict
AI Playlist makes YouTube Music a more credible Spotify alternative by closing a visible prompt-based discovery gap. It is especially persuasive for existing YouTube Premium subscribers and for listeners who value videos, live recordings, remixes and covers. It does not erase Spotify’s advantages in organization, social listening, device handoff and established discovery. Treat it as a useful switching factor—not a complete replacement—until YouTube Music documents broader availability and more playlist controls.
