YouTube Music began rolling out an AI Playlist generator in February 2026. Eligible YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium members can describe a mood, genre, activity or era, and the mobile app creates a playlist. Availability is still dependent on rollout stage, country, app version and account, so not every Premium subscriber will see the control.
What YouTube Music AI Playlist does
AI Playlist is a prompt-based generator, not a conventional automatically updating mix. You describe the listening session you want and YouTube Music selects tracks to form a playlist. Launch examples included “raging death metal,” “sad post rock,” “progressive house mix for a chill party,” “indie pop” and “90s classic hits” (TechCrunch, February 10, 2026).
Requests can combine several ideas, such as a genre, mood, activity, period and familiarity level. The service does not publish a fixed song count, ranking formula or guarantee that every instruction will be followed.
Who can access it?
- Subscriptions: YouTube says AI Playlist is for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium members.
- Device: The documented creation flow is in the YouTube Music mobile app. YouTube has not clearly documented an equivalent desktop-web creation path.
- Rollout: Access can be phased or account-specific. A missing button does not by itself prove that your subscription is ineligible.
- Country and language: YouTube has published a country and language list for the separate Ask Music experience, not a universal list for every AI Playlist rollout. Ask Music is documented in English or Spanish in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Latin American countries other than Brazil (YouTube Help).
How to create an AI playlist
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app and sign in to the account with Premium access.
- Tap Library.
- Tap New.
- Select AI playlist.
- Describe the music you want and submit the request.
This Library → New → AI playlist path is the workflow documented by YouTube (YouTube Help). Launch coverage also reported text and voice input, although the support page most clearly documents text prompting for this specific button (TechCrunch).

Prompt examples that are more useful
Specific prompts give the system more context, but they are requests rather than guaranteed controls. Include whichever dimensions matter to you:
- Genre and mood: “Sad post-rock with a slow, cinematic feel.”
- Activity and energy: “Upbeat jazz-funk for cooking, with no ballads.”
- Era: “90s classic hits for a long evening drive.”
- Reference artists: “Late-night trip-hop for fans of Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky; favor slower tracks and deep cuts.”
- Catalog preference: “Mostly official studio recordings, avoiding live versions, remixes and duplicate uploads.”
- Length or familiarity: “A roughly 45-minute workout playlist of energetic 2000s alternative rock, balancing familiar songs and lesser-known artists.”
YouTube does not confirm that duration, explicit-content requests, artist exclusions or version filters are always honored. Check the first results before relying on a playlist for a drive, workout or event.

What to do when the result is poor
Remove catalog mismatches
YouTube Music draws from the wider YouTube ecosystem. A generated list can therefore contain unofficial uploads, fan edits, live performances, remixes or duplicate versions when you wanted official audio. Open the playlist, inspect the opening tracks, and remove anything unsuitable.
Make a narrower request
If the list is generic, add a tighter era, reference artists, activity and energy level. For example: “Create a late-night playlist for fans of Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky, emphasizing slower trip-hop tracks and avoiding obvious greatest hits.” Adding a few anchor songs can also make manual refinement easier, but no prompt guarantees perfect compliance.

Edit it like any other playlist
YouTube documents ordinary playlist controls after creation: add or remove songs, reorder tracks, rename the playlist, add a description, change privacy and delete it. YouTube’s help page does not establish that you can keep chatting with the generator to revise the same playlist conversationally. Playlists can appear in both YouTube Music and YouTube, subject to content-type limitations (YouTube Help).

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the AI Playlist option is missing
- Confirm that you are signed into the Google account holding the Premium membership.
- Update YouTube Music from your device’s app store.
- Use the mobile app rather than the desktop website.
- Check your account country and app language against the service’s documented availability where applicable.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then sign out and back in.
- Allow for phased rollout: some Premium users report not seeing the option after updating, but those community reports do not prove a general outage (YouTube Community).
- If it remains absent, use Help and feedback inside YouTube Music.
Historical community posts also describe save errors and inaccessible generated playlists, but they are anecdotal and do not establish a current widespread problem. If a playlist will not save, reopen the app and retry; as a fallback, create a normal playlist and transfer the tracks you want (YouTube Community).

Does Premium include YouTube Music?
YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused subscription. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium as well as broader YouTube benefits such as ad-free playback, background play and downloads (YouTube). Choose the music-only plan if you primarily need listening; choose YouTube Premium if ad-free viewing and playback across the main YouTube service matter too. Prices vary by country and plan, so check the official signup pages rather than relying on an old figure: YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium.
The generator alone is unlikely to justify a subscription for a casual listener, particularly if the feature is not yet enabled on the account. It is more compelling for an existing subscriber who frequently builds mood- or activity-based playlists.
How it compares with other services
| Service | Best fit | Trade-off for a YouTube Music user |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify Premium | Listeners prioritizing mature algorithmic discovery and changing personalized mixes. | Less suited to people who want YouTube videos, covers, remixes and user-uploaded material in one ecosystem. |
| Apple Music | Apple-device users who value lossless and spatial audio and a more tightly managed catalog. | Less YouTube-native video and upload integration. |
| Amazon Music | People invested in Amazon services or comparing bundled value. | Do not assume its current AI tools are feature-for-feature equivalent without checking its interface. |
| Deezer | Listeners seeking another catalog and personalization ecosystem. | A comparison for discovery and catalog preferences rather than a confirmed replacement for AI Playlist. |
YouTube’s strategic reason for adding prompt-based creation is clear: reduce the work of assembling a playlist, make mood-based discovery conversational and give Premium members another exclusive benefit. Industry coverage places YouTube Music alongside Spotify, Amazon Music and Deezer as services experimenting with prompt-assisted playlist creation (Music Business Worldwide).
The Bottom Line
AI Playlist is worth trying if you already pay for YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium and want fast, conversational starting points for playlists. Treat the output as a draft: availability is not universal, the mobile workflow is the one YouTube documents, and mixed YouTube catalog entries still need human cleanup. Do not subscribe solely for this feature until it appears on your account and its results fit your listening habits.
