Ultra now provides ad-free playback for eligible Prime movies and shows, 4K/UHD video and Dolby Atmos. The Prime membership price itself did not change.
This is not a separate programming library. Amazon says the underlying selection remains broadly the same; Ultra changes picture quality, sound, advertising treatment, stream limits and downloads. Live sports, live events, live channels and other selected ad-supported programming may still contain commercials.
What changed on April 10, 2026?
Prime Video Ad Free became Prime Video Ultra in the United States. Existing Ad Free customers were converted to Ultra, so the change is both a rebrand and a price increase—not merely a new label. Amazon announced the change on March 13, 2026. (Amazon’s announcement; Amazon forum notice.)

What remains included without Ultra?
Prime members who decline Ultra keep the standard Prime Video benefit and its general catalog, including Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed titles and live sports. Amazon lists HD, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision in the standard tier, along with up to four concurrent streams and 50 downloads.
The standard benefit does not include ad-free playback for eligible Prime movies and television shows, 4K/UHD access or Dolby Atmos. Amazon’s description does not mean every title is locked to one exact resolution; availability depends on the title and playback setup.
What Ultra adds
Ad-free eligible Prime movies and series
Ultra removes advertisements from qualifying Prime movies and television programs. It does not promise a commercial-free experience across every part of Prime Video.

4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos
Ultra makes 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos available for supported titles and equipment. Dolby Vision is different: Amazon lists that picture format in both tiers, while Dolby Atmos is an Ultra feature.
More streams and downloads
The published limits rise from four to five concurrent streams and from 50 to 100 downloads compared with the standard Prime benefit. The previous Ad Free arrangement had lower published limits of three streams and 25 downloads.
Ultra does not remove every advertisement
Amazon specifically says live television, live events, sports and other selected ad-supported content may still include advertising with Ultra. Ads or promotional material can also appear in third-party channels and other content with separate commercial rules. Check what you are watching before treating an ad as a billing error.

Ultra does not make every title 4K
A subscription cannot turn an HD master into native 4K. UHD playback depends on the title’s available format, the television or streaming device, the HDMI chain, the Prime Video app and your internet connection. Amazon also warns that not all content is available in every resolution. A 4K television alone is therefore not a guarantee of UHD playback.
How much does it cost?
| Plan combination | Cost before tax |
|---|---|
| Ultra monthly add-on | $4.99/month ($59.88 if paid for 12 months) |
| Ultra annual option | $45.99/year, for eligible customers with annual Prime |
| Prime monthly membership | $14.99/month |
| Prime annual membership | $139/year |
| Monthly Prime plus monthly Ultra | $19.98/month |
| Annual Prime plus annual Ultra | $184.99/year, if the annual Ultra option is offered to the account |
The $4.99 price is about 67% higher than the former $2.99 Ad Free fee. It is an add-on, not a replacement for Prime or another qualifying Prime Video subscription. Amazon’s announcement says the Prime membership price remained $14.99 monthly or $139 annually.
Who should pay for Ultra?
Ultra is a strong fit when:
- You regularly watch Prime Video and strongly dislike ads.
- Your household uses a compatible 4K television and watches titles offered in UHD.
- You have a Dolby Atmos soundbar or receiver and supported content.
- Several people watch at once, or you download substantial amounts for travel.
- You already had Ad Free and want to keep its ad-free treatment.
The standard Prime benefit may be enough when:
- You use an HD-only television or mostly watch titles unavailable in 4K.
- Your broadband or home network cannot reliably sustain high-bitrate UHD streams.
- You mainly watch live sports or other programming that may still show ads.
- You use Prime Video occasionally and primarily keep Prime for shipping or other benefits.
- You already pay for several streaming services and do not value Prime Video’s catalog.
Common problems and what they mean
“I paid for Ad Free. Why is the charge higher?”
Amazon converted the former $2.99 monthly Ad Free subscription to Ultra at $4.99 per month. That is a recurring price increase tied to the rebrand.

“I have a 4K TV but only see HD.”
Verify that your account has Ultra, that the title is offered in UHD, and that the device, app, HDMI equipment and network support it. Any one of those conditions can prevent 4K playback.
“Ultra says ad-free, but I still see an ad.”
Identify whether the program is live sports, a live event, a live channel, selected ad-supported content, a third-party subscription or promotional material. Those categories may retain advertising.
“The annual option is missing.”
Amazon describes the $45.99 annual option for customers with annual Prime memberships. Monthly billing, third-party billing and regional or account-specific arrangements may not display it.

“Will five streams always work?”
No. The five-stream figure applies across profiles, and Amazon warns that title, device and provider sub-limits may apply.
Bottom line for Prime members
Choose Ultra if ad-free eligible movies and shows, UHD picture quality or Dolby Atmos are valuable on your actual equipment. Keep the standard Prime benefit if HD, HDR and occasional ads meet your needs. If you rarely use Prime Video, compare the full Prime-plus-Ultra cost with the value of the wider Prime bundle before adding the upgrade.
