YouTube Music tested a Quick picks feature that let listeners select several songs and start a radio based on those choices. It was reported as a limited experiment in August 2024, not a confirmed rollout to everyone. Today, Google’s documented custom-mix option is a separate tool: Library → New → Mix.
What the Quick picks radio test did
Quick picks is a shelf of recommended music on YouTube Music’s Home feed. In an August 2024 report, 9to5Google described a test that let users choose multiple tracks from that shelf before starting a radio. The reported interface showed a plus control beside songs; selected tracks gained checkmarks, and a Start radio button displayed the number selected. The report said the shelf showed 20 songs, but that should not be treated as a permanent or current limit. 9to5Google’s report said the feature was not broadly visible at the time.
The point of choosing several songs is to give the recommendation system more than one starting point. A listener might combine tracks from different artists, eras, or moods instead of building a radio around one song. That could make a session feel more tailored, but it does not give control over the precise queue, order, or whether every selected track will appear. A radio is generated and adaptive; it is not a fixed playlist.
Is the multi-song selector available now?
There is no confirmation in the available official documentation that the Quick picks multi-song selector became a universal feature. Google’s September 2025 feature roundup described a different Quick picks improvement: recommendations could surface music from artists a user had recently encountered without deliberately searching for them. That update concerns recommendations, not the 2024 song-selection interface. Google’s roundup does not confirm a broad rollout of the selector.

So if you do not see plus buttons or a Start radio control in Quick picks, that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your phone. Experimental features can vary by account, device, region, app version, or server-side availability. The original report described limited visibility on Android and iOS; it did not establish that the feature had launched across either platform.
Use the documented custom Mix instead
Google’s current help instructions describe an artist-based Mix builder in the YouTube Music mobile app. To create one:

- Open YouTube Music and tap Library.
- Tap New, then Mix.
- Select artists for the mix and tap Next.
- Adjust Artist variety and Music discovery. You can also tune filters such as BPM, popularity, and mood.
- Tap Done to start the mix.
While listening, open Up next to continue adjusting categories in the queue. You can also use Tune on the mix page to revise settings later. The controls shape the generated listening session; they do not guarantee an exact order or every song you might expect. See Google’s current Mix instructions for the documented workflow.

It begins with artists and tuning controls, not a selection of specific songs from the Home shelf. YouTube announced custom radio from multiple artists for Android and iOS in 2023, with controls for artist variety, familiarity or discovery, and filters. The current Mix experience is the documented route for that broader artist-based approach. Google’s 2023 feature announcement provides that earlier context.

Ask Music is another, separate option
Ask Music lets eligible listeners describe what they want in ordinary language instead of choosing songs or artists. For example, a listener might request “upbeat indie for a morning run” or “slow jazz with familiar vocal tracks.” In the app, go to Home, find What are you in the mood for?, tap Ask any way you like, enter or speak a request, then tap the play control to start the generated mix. Ask Music may also appear in Search with a result labelled Mix created by AI.
Ask Music is not the Quick picks selector: it uses a natural-language prompt, while the 2024 test used multiple individual song selections. Google’s current help page says Ask Music is available to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium members on mobile, in English or Spanish, in listed countries. Availability can change, and Google cautions that results may vary in quality or accuracy. Check Google’s Ask Music help page for current eligibility and country details.

Which option should you use?
- Want to start from particular songs you have just seen? Use the Quick picks selector if it appears in your account, but treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed standard feature.
- Want to shape a mix around artists? Use Library → New → Mix and tune variety, discovery, and the available filters.
- Know the mood or activity, but not the artists? Try Ask Music if your account and location are eligible.
- Need exact tracks in a repeatable order? Make a playlist. A generated radio or Mix is less predictable; Google documents playlist creation in its playlist and library help.
- Only want a station based on one track? Start the standard radio from that song if the multi-song control is not available.
If the Quick picks control is missing
Update YouTube Music from your device’s app store, reopen it, confirm that the intended Google account is active, and check the Home feed again. These steps can rule out a stale app or account mix-up, but an update cannot guarantee access if Google is controlling a test on its servers. For a documented alternative, use Library → New → Mix; use single-song radio or a playlist if those better fit what you want.
Quick picks itself remains part of YouTube Music’s recommendation experience.
