Short answer: YouTube Music has been rolling out a Premium restriction on full lyrics. Reports in February 2026 described free users getting a limited number of lyric views—often reported as five—before the rest of the lyrics became blurred or a Premium prompt appeared. That does not mean lyrics have disappeared from every free account or every song: the rollout and the exact experience can vary, and Google’s public help pages do not set out a universal five-view rule.
What happens to lyrics on the free tier?
When the restriction applies, a free listener can open a song’s Lyrics tab in the Now Playing screen and see a notice about remaining lyric views. After the available views are used, the app may leave only an opening section visible, blur the rest, or show a prompt such as “Unlock lyrics with Premium.” The precise wording and display may change.
News reports published February 9–10, 2026 described a limit of five views. Treat that as reported behavior, not a guaranteed quota: reporting did not establish whether the counter resets, and Google has not published a help-page rule confirming that every account gets five views. Android Headlines’ report and Pulse Nigeria’s coverage describe the reported change.
The best description is that full lyrics are being restricted behind Premium for many free listeners—not that YouTube has removed all lyrics. Paid members should receive the Premium experience for tracks that have lyrics available, but no subscription guarantees lyrics for every song.

Who is affected—and is the change universal?
The restriction is aimed at the free, ad-supported YouTube Music experience. Reports describe a gradual rollout, so one free account may see the counter or blurred text while another does not. Country, account, app version, platform, and rollout timing may all affect what appears. Google’s product information also cautions that YouTube Music experiences can differ by region.
As of August 18, 2026, Google’s public help documentation does not clearly establish a single global policy covering every account, nor does it confirm a universal five-view allowance or its reset period. Not seeing a paywall today does not prove an account is permanently exempt; seeing no lyrics at all does not prove the paywall is responsible.

How to check what is happening on your account
- Sign in to the Google account you actually use for YouTube Music.
- Play a track that is known to have lyrics, then open the Now Playing screen.
- Select Lyrics.
- Look for a remaining-views notice, a Premium unlock prompt, or lyrics that become blurred after a preview. Those signs suggest the restriction has reached your account.
If the tab says lyrics are unavailable or shows nothing, try another well-known track. Lyrics can be missing for song-specific catalog, metadata, or availability reasons, and an app or account issue can also interfere. A missing lyric display by itself is not proof that you have exhausted a quota.

Google says YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium benefits. If you already have YouTube Premium, you should not normally need to buy a separate Music Premium plan for those benefits. Premium Lite is a separate product; do not assume it includes all YouTube Music Premium features. Check the plan details shown for your market.

Google lists ad-free listening, background play, downloads, and audio-only playback among YouTube Music Premium features. YouTube Premium adds benefits for regular YouTube as well. What does it cost?
Reports published in February 2026 cited US prices of $10.99 a month for YouTube Music Premium and $13.99 a month for YouTube Premium. Those are historical reported prices, not a confirmation of what a US subscriber will be charged on August 18, 2026. Prices and offers can vary by country, plan, taxes, billing platform, and subsequent price changes. Check the live YouTube Music membership page or YouTube Premium signup page before deciding.

Is Premium worth it if you mainly want lyrics?
If lyrics are the only feature you want and you consult them occasionally, a subscription may be poor value. The reported restriction can make full lyrics a reason to upgrade, but it does not make paying the right choice for everyone.
- Music Premium may make sense if you regularly listen in YouTube Music and also value ad-free music, background playback, offline downloads, or audio-only playback.
- YouTube Premium may make more sense if you also spend substantial time watching regular YouTube and want its broader benefits alongside Music Premium.
- Staying free may make sense if lyrics are an occasional convenience, you do not need the other paid features, or the particular track you want has no lyrics available anyway.
The commercial logic appears to be that full lyrics can help distinguish the paid tier and encourage free listeners to subscribe. That is an inference from the product change, not an explanation Google has publicly confirmed. The available evidence does not establish that licensing costs caused the restriction.

Already paying? Check your account before buying again
If lyrics are still locked despite a subscription, first make sure YouTube Music is signed in to the same Google account that holds the membership. In YouTube or YouTube Music, open your profile picture and check Purchases and memberships (the exact route can vary by app and platform). Confirm the membership name and status before starting another subscription.
Also check how the membership is billed. An Apple-billed subscription may need to be managed through Apple. Google warns that people can accidentally maintain duplicate YouTube and YouTube Music subscriptions; its membership guidance explains the plan relationship and billing considerations. If the membership is Premium Lite or another benefit with different terms, check its specific inclusions rather than assuming it is Music Premium.
Google documents individual prepaid annual plans in some markets. These are non-recurring, generally not refundable or pausable under the published terms, and signup is not available directly on Apple devices. Availability and eligibility can change, so review Google’s annual-plan terms before choosing one.

For many free listeners, full YouTube Music lyrics are no longer reliably free: a limited preview and Premium prompt have been reported, with five views often cited. But the quota, reset timing, geography, and rollout are not documented as a universal Google rule. Check a known-lyrics track on your account, distinguish a paywall from song-specific missing lyrics, and compare the complete membership bundle—not just lyrics—before paying.
