Some YouTube Music users are seeing a limit on free lyrics access and a prompt to subscribe—but the reports point to a test, not a confirmed policy for everyone. One report describes a counter showing three views remaining; another says free users were limited to five songs. YouTube has not publicly confirmed a permanent lyrics paywall or explained who is included.
The experiment recalls Spotify’s 2024 test of restricting lyrics for some free users. Spotify later expanded free access, and its current help documentation says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium tiers, subject to availability. That history makes YouTube’s reported test notable, but it does not establish that YouTube will follow the same path.
What YouTube Music users are seeing
Reports from September 2025 describe free-tier users encountering a Premium upsell after viewing lyrics. In one screenshot, the message reportedly read, “You have 3 views remaining. Unlock lyrics with Premium.” PiunikaWeb’s report describes that three-view counter. Android Central reported a separate five-song limit.

The available evidence does not establish a universal quota, whether the count means views or songs, or when it resets.

Nor is it clear whether the test applies to plain or synchronized lyrics, translations, or every way of opening a lyrics panel. Reports do not establish a consistent device or app-version scope, eligible regions, or whether YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, family or student plans, and promotional trials are all treated alike. Do not assume that a particular limit or entitlement applies to every account.
A test, not a confirmed platform-wide policy
The evidence cited so far consists chiefly of individual user reports and screenshots relayed by technology publications. No public YouTube announcement in the cited sources confirms a permanent change, specifies a rollout, or says that all free users will have to pay for lyrics.
That is why “some users are seeing a lyrics limit” is more accurate than “YouTube Music has put lyrics behind a paywall.” A test can be limited by account cohort, location, app, or another factor—and can be changed or stopped. The public reporting does not identify which factor is at work here.

The reports also discuss third-party lyric providers, including Musixmatch and LyricFind. That information is attributed to PiunikaWeb’s coverage; it is not a public YouTube licensing explanation establishing why the test exists.
Spotify’s lyrics test—and what happened afterward
Spotify tested restricting lyrics for some free users in 2024. When the change became public, Spotify told TechCrunch it was a limited test affecting users in two markets—not a blanket removal of lyrics from the free tier. TechCrunch reported the test on May 2, 2024.
By July, Spotify had expanded the number of lyrics views available to free users, according to TechCrunch’s July 30 report. Spotify’s current support page says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, while noting that availability can depend on the song, market, device, and rights-holder agreements. In February 2026, Spotify also announced lyric translations and offline previews as features for Free and Premium users; see its newsroom update.

It is fair to say Spotify’s restriction was followed by criticism and later broader free access. The sources cited here do not establish that backlash was the reason Spotify changed the allowance, or that the company formally described the test as a failure. “Spotify’s short-lived experiment” is more precise than saying Spotify admitted defeat.
Why might a streaming service restrict lyrics?
Lyrics are a potentially useful subscription lever: they are visible during listening, are used repeatedly, and can be separated from access to the music catalog itself. A company could test whether limiting them encourages upgrades or makes a paid tier feel more valuable. Licensing costs are another possible consideration: lyrics are copyrighted text, and platforms may need agreements to display them.
Those are plausible commercial explanations, not confirmed motives from YouTube. A licensing expense does not prove that a paywall is necessary or that a particular restriction directly recovers that expense. YouTube could also be testing subscription positioning rather than passing through lyrics costs.

Some listeners may see lyrics as a basic companion to a song rather than a premium extra. Lyrics can help with pronunciation, language learning, comprehension, or identifying words, and may assist some users with accessibility needs. They are not, however, a substitute for captions, transcripts, or dedicated accessibility features in every situation.

First check whether you are seeing a quota message or simply a track with no lyrics. Lyrics may be missing because of song-specific licensing or availability, a regional restriction, an app issue, or an account-entitlement problem; those cases are different from a deliberate limit.

- Confirm that you are signed into the Google account you intend to use, and check whether that account currently has Premium access if applicable.
- Try lyrics on more than one song. A problem limited to one track may reflect that song’s availability rather than a quota.
- Check the same account on another supported device or the web player. Different results may help identify an app- or device-specific issue, though they do not prove the test is absent.
- Update or restart the official YouTube Music app and check the account status again. A trial or plan change may not be reflected immediately if entitlement information has not refreshed.
- Note the exact warning, device, app version, account plan, and songs affected. This can help distinguish a recurring quota from a one-off failure when contacting support.
These checks can help diagnose a bug or missing track; they will not bypass a server-side test. Lyrics availability can also differ from synchronized lyrics or translations, so the presence of one feature does not guarantee the others.

Options if you do not want to subscribe
If the limit is affecting you, consider an official lyrics provider or licensed lyrics site where available, or look for an artist-uploaded lyric video on YouTube. You can also compare another streaming service, but check the specific songs and features in your market rather than assuming every service offers identical coverage. Keeping a lawfully obtained lyric reference for personal use may be another option where permitted.
Avoid modified apps, unofficial clients, scraping tools, and services designed to defeat subscription controls. They can put your account or device at risk and may violate service terms or copyright rules.
Before subscribing solely to restore lyrics, weigh the whole package. YouTube Premium may include broader YouTube benefits as well as YouTube Music Premium, depending on the plan, but the reported lyrics restriction may be temporary or account-specific. Spotify currently documents lyrics for both tiers, though song and regional availability still varies. Paying for a larger bundle makes sense only if its other benefits are useful to you; check the signup page in your country for current prices and terms.

YouTube is testing a similar tactic, based on the user reports, but it is too early to call it the same outcome. Spotify’s sequence—limited test, broader free access afterward—shows that lyrics restrictions can change; it does not predict what YouTube will decide. Until YouTube confirms the scope and duration, treat a warning as evidence about your account, not proof of a global policy.
