YouTube Music can play podcasts, switch between audio and video for supported shows, cast to compatible devices and import some missing shows by RSS. But playing an episode is not the same as managing a daily podcast habit. As of August 2026, the app is most convincing for shows built around YouTube. Listeners who depend on automatic downloads, a carefully managed backlog or a feed-first library may still want a dedicated podcast app.
The test: can it manage a listening routine?
A useful podcast app has to do more than start playback. A listener may want to discover a show, follow it, learn when a new episode arrives, download it without remembering, queue several episodes, resume later and keep track of what is finished. For a long interview or documentary series, chapters, transcripts and dependable episode ordering can matter too.
YouTube Music covers much of the playback side. Its weaknesses are more apparent in the work around playback: acquiring episodes, organizing a backlog and relying on metadata. That distinction matters. Calling it a music app with no podcast support would be wrong; treating it as a full replacement for a dedicated podcast catcher would also be too generous.

Where YouTube Music works well
The app’s clearest advantage is YouTube-native podcasts. When a creator supplies compatible video, listeners can switch between Audio and Video modes. Audio-only listening is available for supported podcast content regardless of membership, though not every show or episode supports every mode. YouTube Music also supports background playback, casting and library subscriptions; Google documents a New Episodes playlist for followed shows. That combination is useful for video-first conversations, creator interviews and shows whose visual element is part of the experience. A listener can keep music and many podcasts in one app, and YouTube’s creator ecosystem makes it a natural place to encounter shows distributed primarily through YouTube. For someone following a handful of such programs, the convenience may outweigh the missing management tools.
There is also an RSS fallback for some shows absent from the catalog. This is helpful, but it does not turn YouTube Music into a neutral, fully featured RSS client; the limitations are significant enough to treat it as a workaround rather than a complete catalog solution.
The clearest missing basic: automatic podcast downloads
Google’s help documentation says podcast Smart Downloads are not available and that listeners cannot download an entire show at once. Episodes must be selected individually. A New Episodes playlist is not a substitute: having new episodes collected in a list does not mean they have been automatically downloaded for the commute.
Manual downloads are workable if you follow few shows and remember to prepare before leaving Wi-Fi. They are a poor fit for a busy feed, a daily-news routine or travel when forgetting one tap can leave nothing available offline. Google also says downloaded content needs to reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days. Some episodes or shows may not support audio-only downloads, and Google identifies regional limits on podcast downloads for paid members traveling outside the United States. Check the current details in Google’s download guidance; availability can vary by region and content.

Premium does not close this particular gap. It adds membership benefits, including background playback and offline listening, but Google’s documentation still says podcast Smart Downloads and full-show downloads are unavailable. Nor does a followed show guarantee that each episode will be waiting offline. If automatic episode acquisition is central to your routine, this is a substantive shortcoming, not a minor preference.
RSS import: useful, but not feature parity
If a show is missing, Google documents a way to add it by feed:
- Open YouTube Music and tap Library.
- Tap Podcast at the top, then Add podcast in the bottom-right.
- Choose Add a podcast by RSS feed, accept the disclaimer, paste the feed URL and tap Add.
Google says most feeds appear within minutes, though some take longer. Copy the RSS feed URL itself, not the show’s website, YouTube link or Apple Podcasts page. Imported shows are marked in the library. If a native listing later becomes available, the documented removal route is the menu beside the RSS version in Library, then Remove from Library. Google also warns that the feed host can access your IP address. The full steps and caveats are in Google’s RSS-import instructions.
The important catch is that importing a feed restores access to episodes, not the full native YouTube Music experience. Google says RSS-added shows do not support audio/video switching, likes or dislikes, the same native show and episode sharing flow, a podcast channel page, reporting controls or captions. That last omission can matter for accessibility and for listeners who use text to follow a long episode. Google’s documentation does not establish compatibility with every paid, private or tokenized subscriber feed, so do not assume that a feed from a membership service will work without trying that specific URL.

Management features are harder to judge than a playback button
Google documents a New Episodes playlist, but that alone does not answer every listener’s workflow question. A playlist is not automatically the same thing as a per-show push alert, a rule for downloading only the latest episodes, or a queue that remains organized separately from music. Google’s public help pages cited here do not establish the full scope of notification controls or a dedicated podcast queue with the management depth expected from a catcher.
That is a reason to be precise, not to claim that YouTube Music has no queue or no notifications. If these features determine whether you can use the app, check your current version and account directly: follow a show and inspect its notification options; queue multiple podcast episodes and see whether the queue persists after closing the app or switching devices; and check how completed episodes are treated. App behavior can change, and the documentation available here does not settle those questions across Android, iOS, web and casting.
The same caution applies to playback tools such as sleep timers, silence trimming, custom skip intervals, chapter navigation and mark-as-played behavior. Those are familiar expectations in podcast-focused apps, but the cited YouTube Music documentation concentrates on playback, library and downloads rather than establishing a uniform set of podcast-specific controls across platforms. Do not assume a feature is present—or absent—on every device based on another platform’s interface.

Long episodes make metadata matter
For a two-hour interview, a reliable episode page can be as important as the player. Chapters help listeners revisit sections; transcripts can improve accessibility and make an episode easier to search; clear show notes preserve links and context. Apple, for example, documents chapters, timed links and transcript controls for its podcast platform. That is a specific comparison of documented capabilities, not a claim that every competing app provides every feature on every show. See Apple’s creator documentation.

YouTube Music’s public help material cited here does not establish equivalent chapter, transcript or in-episode search support across its podcast catalog. Feature availability may depend on the show and how it was supplied, so avoid assuming every episode lacks these tools. RSS imports have the more concrete limitation: Google says they do not have captions.
Episode order can also be less authoritative than a podcast listener might expect. Google says some surfaces use an episode’s release date and others use its YouTube publish date. The release date is not verified by YouTube and can be edited by the creator; if no release date is supplied, YouTube uses the publish date. A metadata mistake can therefore make an episode appear out of order, while a reupload, trailer or bonus item can complicate a backlog. This does not mean every show is misordered; it means the displayed chronology depends partly on creator-supplied information. See Google’s explanation of episode dates.

Premium can make YouTube Music more convenient if you already value the wider YouTube and music bundle. Google documents background playback and offline benefits, while supported podcasts can be listened to in audio-only mode. But Premium is not a podcast-management upgrade: the documented gaps around Smart Downloads and full-show downloads remain.
It also does not guarantee ad-free podcasts. Google says podcast ads may still appear for Premium members, and creator-embedded promotions can remain. A subscription may still be worthwhile for someone who wants ad-free YouTube in eligible contexts and music benefits, but buying it chiefly to obtain a complete podcast catcher is a poor bet. Review Google’s details on podcast ads and downloads before treating membership as an answer to these gaps. Product behavior and availability differ by region; these claims should not be assumed to describe every market identically.

A dedicated app such as Pocket Casts is worth considering when podcast-specific queueing, synchronization and feed management matter more than YouTube video integration; its support center documents those podcast-focused workflows. Apple users may also consider Apple Podcasts, whose creator documentation covers chapters and transcripts. These are alternatives for particular needs, not universal winners. If YouTube-native video shows are the priority, YouTube Music may remain the better home for those shows.
The practical verdict
YouTube Music has moved well beyond simply hosting a podcast tab: it can be a capable place to play, follow and sometimes download podcasts, and its video integration is a real advantage. But its documented lack of automatic podcast downloads and full-show downloads is a major weakness for routine listening. RSS importing helps with missing catalog entries while sacrificing native features, and creator-controlled, unverified release dates can make ordering less dependable.
For many listeners, the sensible choice is not all-or-nothing. Keep YouTube Music for video-first shows and the convenience of an existing YouTube subscription; use a dedicated podcast app for a large RSS library, automatic episode handling or more podcast-oriented management. Whether the shortcomings matter depends less on how many podcasts YouTube Music can play than on how much work you want to do after you press follow.
