YouTube Music can now carry more of your listening session between devices: reporting describes playback-progress resume arriving in 2025, followed by queue synchronization across Android, iOS, and the web in January 2026. That makes it easier to pick up where you left off, but it is session restoration—not a full Spotify Connect-style system for choosing and remotely controlling active players.
What changed in YouTube Music
The upgrade developed in two stages. They address related but different problems: remembering where playback stopped and restoring the queue used in a recent session.
July 2025: playback-progress resume
Android Authority reported on July 18, 2025, that YouTube Music version 8.26.51 was showing listening progress from other devices and a “Resume” option. The feature was intended to let a listener continue a playlist or session on another signed-in device. Android Authority’s report documents the rollout; version 8.26.51 is the version associated with that initial report, not a claim about the current version required.
January 2026: queue synchronization
On January 25, 2026, 9to5Google reported that the Now Playing queue could sync among signed-in Android, iOS, and web sessions. When YouTube Music opens on another device, its miniplayer may show the last song and queue used elsewhere, sometimes with a temporary label such as “From your iPhone” or “From your browser.” The report describes the latest session being restored, not a queue continuously mirrored in real time. 9to5Google’s account of queue sync covers the behavior and its trade-offs.

How to resume listening on another device
- Sign in to YouTube Music with the same Google account on both devices.
- Start a song, album, playlist, mix, or queue on the first device, then pause or stop playback while online.
- Open YouTube Music on the second device and look for the recent session in the miniplayer or Home feed.
- Tap the item or choose “Resume” if that control appears.
- Check the queue before pressing Play, particularly if the second device already had a queue you wanted to keep.
The exact placement and wording can vary. The feature has been reported as a gradual rollout involving app updates and server-side changes, and Google’s help pages do not describe it as a dedicated setting. If nothing appears, confirm the account, update the app, close and reopen it, and try again after starting and pausing playback on the original device while online. These are practical checks, not Google-documented fixes. Android Authority’s January 2026 coverage describes the rollout as less than universally consistent.
What syncs—and what does not
Listening history, playback position, queue restoration, and live device control are separate capabilities. YouTube Music already had cross-device listening history; the newer reports describe progress indicators and a Resume action, plus restoration of the most recent queue. None of that, on its own, means that two devices share a live queue or that one can reliably act as a remote for the other.

“Resume” means the service can restore a recent listening session, including playback progress where supported. It is not a guarantee of frame-perfect continuation for every track, content type, or device pairing. An earlier web queue implementation could restore a song and queue without preserving the precise position, as 9to5Google reported in September 2024. The later progress feature improves on that behavior, but available reports do not establish exact-position resume in every case.
Which devices are covered?
The reported queue-sync behavior specifically covers YouTube Music on Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, and the web. Google separately documents YouTube Music support on Chromecast-enabled devices, smart speakers and displays, smart TVs and streaming devices, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wear OS watches, and compatible accessories. That general device support does not establish that each device participates in the new resume or queue-sync behavior. See Google’s YouTube Music connected-device help for supported playback options and availability details.

Casting is a distinct playback path: Google’s instructions explain how to cast from the mobile or web app, but casting to a speaker or TV should not be assumed to behave exactly like opening YouTube Music directly on a phone or browser. The same caution applies to offline sessions, uploads, music videos, podcasts, supervised accounts, and region-dependent features; the cited rollout reports do not establish identical behavior for all of them.
How it compares with Spotify Connect
| Capability | YouTube Music | Spotify |
|---|---|---|
| Resume recent listening on another device | Reported in 2025; resume behavior may vary by rollout and session. | Supported within Spotify’s broader cross-device experience. |
| Restore the latest queue across mobile and web | Reported across Android, iOS, and web in January 2026; described as latest-session restoration. | Part of a broader active-playback and device-control model. |
| Choose an active playback device and move playback | Not demonstrated as equivalent to Spotify Connect in the cited reporting. | A core Spotify Connect strength. |
| Remote control of another active player | Not established as equivalent to Spotify Connect. | More mature and clearly oriented around controlling playback across devices. |
YouTube Music’s improvement closes part of a continuity gap, but the experience reported so far is about reopening the latest session. Spotify Connect is built around active-device selection and control. Spotify’s official Premium benefits page describes its cross-device playback benefits. Neither service’s broader strengths can be judged from resume alone.

The queue-sync trade-off: convenience can mean conflict
Restoring one recent queue is useful when a single listener moves from a phone to a computer. It can be inconvenient when one Google account serves multiple people or contexts: a home speaker might have one queue while a phone starts another, or a work browser might be used for unrelated listening. The latest session may take precedence over a queue already open on another device, and the January report did not identify an obvious sync-control setting.
- Before playing on a second device, inspect the queue if it contains selections you want to preserve.
- Avoid relying on one account for unrelated simultaneous listening if queue continuity causes problems.
- Do not assume each device keeps an isolated queue once recent-session syncing is active.
Is cross-device resume Premium-only?
The available Google connected-device documentation describes the broader YouTube Music experience as available to ad-supported listeners as well as Premium members, with Premium adding benefits such as background listening, downloads, and ad-free music. It does not clearly say whether every part of the newly reported resume and queue-sync behavior requires Premium. The safest conclusion is that the reported behavior is tied to being signed in to the same account; its Premium eligibility is not clearly established in the cited official documentation.

Who benefits most—and whether it is a reason to switch
This is a useful quality-of-life upgrade if you already use YouTube Music and often move between a phone, tablet, and desktop, especially for long playlists, mixes, or albums. It also makes the service less frustrating for listeners who previously had to rebuild a queue after changing devices.
It is less compelling if your main requirement is selecting any active player and controlling it remotely, or if you need completely independent queues on every device. This feature alone is not evidence that YouTube Music has overtaken Spotify for device control. If you are comparing services, YouTube Music is a natural fit for people already invested in YouTube and Google services; Spotify is the stronger choice to investigate when live device handoff is the priority. Apple Music may suit people invested in Apple hardware, Apple One, or its catalog, but the sources cited here do not establish that it offers an equivalent Spotify Connect-style handoff. Apple does provide a playlist-transfer route from YouTube Music, with the caveat that unavailable songs may not transfer: Apple’s transfer instructions.
