YouTube offers several ways for eligible creators to earn: ads on long-form videos and live streams, ads in the Shorts Feed, revenue from YouTube Premium viewing, channel memberships, viewer payments through Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks, and product sales through Shopping. These are separate features with different eligibility rules and setup steps. Meeting a subscriber or viewing threshold does not guarantee approval, ads, or income.
How YouTube monetization works
Monetization is not a single switch. You first need to qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), then accept the relevant terms or modules and enable the features available to your channel. Each route depends on different viewer activity: advertising, Premium viewing, recurring membership payments, one-time fan payments, or product purchases.
YouTube may show ads on a video even when its channel is not eligible to share ad revenue. Ads appearing on your content therefore do not, by themselves, mean you are earning from them.
YPP thresholds: earlier access and ad-revenue access
YouTube’s 2026 eligibility guidance describes two principal thresholds. The lower threshold is an earlier-access tier in eligible countries; it may unlock fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to each feature’s rules. It does not itself unlock ad-revenue sharing.

These are platform eligibility requirements, not earnings estimates or automatic approvals. Watch time from the Shorts Feed does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form route. Paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward the thresholds, apart from eligible follow-on organic views described by YouTube. Apply and turn on eligible features
- Check your channel in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio → Earn to see your eligibility status and any available application or feature options. Availability can depend on your country and channel.
- Meet YPP’s channel requirements. You must live in a country or region where YPP is available, follow YouTube’s channel monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link or prepare to create an AdSense for YouTube account through Studio.
- Complete the application steps and wait for review. Reaching a threshold does not automatically admit a channel. YouTube reviews the channel against its policies and may continue monitoring policy compliance after acceptance.
- Review and accept the relevant module terms. In Studio’s Earn area, accept the Watch Page Monetization Module for Watch Page ads and applicable long-form Premium earnings, the Shorts Monetization Module for Shorts Feed ads and applicable Shorts Premium earnings, and the applicable commerce or fan-funding terms for available features.
- Enable and configure individual features. Turn on the features offered to your channel and choose the relevant controls for videos, Shorts, live streams, memberships, or Shopping. Feature-specific restrictions still apply after YPP acceptance.
Content and channel rules that affect earnings
YPP eligibility and individual feature eligibility are not the same thing. YouTube evaluates channels under its monetization policies, and individual videos must also meet the rules for the relevant earning route. For example, Watch Page advertising is subject to advertiser-friendly requirements and review. Some features also have their own age, country, or content-type restrictions. Channels set as Made for Kids, certain music channels, and channels with ineligible content can be restricted from particular features.

For documentary creators, a channel’s subject matter alone does not establish that every upload qualifies for ads or other monetization. Review the rules for each feature and each video; do not assume that a public upload, a live broadcast, or a video with visible ads is necessarily earning a revenue share.
YouTube can remove monetization from channels that no longer meet its requirements. Its YPP overview says it reserves the right to remove monetization when a channel has not uploaded or posted for six months or more.

Why YouTube earnings vary
There is no reliable universal figure for how much a channel will earn from a view, video, or subscriber. Income depends on which features the channel qualifies for, whether eligible ads or other transactions occur, the audience and its viewing behavior, advertiser suitability, the applicable revenue allocation, and feature availability. YouTube’s partner earnings overview states: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.”
Creators may also owe tax on YouTube income. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and location; consult your local tax authority or a qualified tax professional rather than applying a universal rate.

Keeping an eligible YouTube live stream running
If you earn through eligible live-stream ads or fan features, the broadcast still needs to be live and meet the relevant YouTube rules.
