There is no universal cost winner. For a home server, measure average power at the wall and multiply it by your electricity tariff; for a cloud VM, get a current all-in quote for the exact configuration and location. Then compare both totals alongside setup, maintenance, network reliability and recovery—not just electricity against a headline VM price.
Calculate the home server’s electricity cost
For a server running continuously, use 730 hours as a practical average-month estimate:
Monthly electricity cost (€) = average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × 730 × your marginal electricity price (€/kWh)
Use your own marginal tariff from your electricity bill. This calculation estimates the energy component only; it does not include hardware, maintenance or any extra connectivity cost. No single representative German household tariff or typical home-server power draw is established here, so using a generic rate or wattage would produce a misleading comparison.

Measure the power instead of guessing
A CPU’s advertised thermal design power is not the same as the complete machine’s average consumption at the wall. Measure the server while it is doing the streaming work with a plug-in electricity usage monitor. Record an average over representative operation, rather than relying on a brief idle reading. The monitor is a measurement tool, not a substitute for checking your actual electricity tariff.
Get a complete cloud VM cost
Do not treat a provider’s advertised starting price as the monthly cost of a working stream. Get a current quote for the precise VM size and region you plan to use. Include the instance billing model, storage, public address charges, traffic beyond any included allowance, backups or monitoring you need, and VAT.
Cloud billing depends on provider and purchasing model. AWS lists On-Demand, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot and Dedicated Hosts; compare the option that matches your intended use rather than mixing rates from different models. Hetzner describes monthly caps and hourly billing for shorter use, and says a cloud server remains billable while it exists. Hetzner announced pricing updates for new orders and rescaling from 15 June 2026, making older comparisons particularly liable to be out of date. Its current product page does not establish a complete suitable Germany VM total here, so check the live price and terms directly before deciding.

Compare the costs and trade-offs fairly

The energy-only break-even point is where the home server’s calculated electricity cost equals the cloud VM’s comparable monthly instance cost. If home electricity is lower, the home option costs less on those two line items only; hardware, connectivity and maintenance can change the total. Likewise, a lower VM quote is not proof that it will be simpler or more reliable for your specific broadcast.
Check whether the connection can sustain the stream
Cost is useful only if the setup can keep sending the stream. YouTube publishes recommended encoder bitrates by resolution and frame rate, recommends RTMPS, and advises testing upload bitrate. Its streaming tips say the stream bitrate should ideally be 20% below available upload bandwidth. Leave additional practical headroom if other household users or devices share the connection, since available upload can vary.

Use YouTube’s current settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the actual upload path. A home server relies on the home ISP, router and power supply; a VM relies on the provider’s network and region. Neither cost calculation by itself establishes that the full streaming path is reliable.

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says a live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content, and streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. It describes a CamStreamer application as supporting continuous streams; that is a description of that vendor’s product, not a general guarantee that every 24/7 broadcast will remain live indefinitely. Plan how you will detect a stopped encoder and restore the stream, and do not assume one uninterrupted archive will continue forever.

Hetzner states: “We will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure a monthly availability of 99.9% for our Cloud Servers.” This is a provider-published monthly availability commitment with conditional remedies, not an independently measured uptime statistic or a guarantee of uninterrupted YouTube broadcasts or zero lost viewers. Home equipment has its own failure points: power, router, ISP, host and operator recovery. Compare how much interruption you can tolerate and how quickly you can respond, as well as the bill.
