YouTube Live Streaming Bitrate: x264 vs. NVENC Settings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a YouTube Live H.264 stream, start with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, set rate control to CBR, and use a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose x264 if your CPU has headroom and you want software-encoder preset control; choose NVENC if a compatible NVIDIA GPU is available and shifting encoding work off the CPU helps your system. Neither is a universal image-quality winner: test both with the same content and settings before a real broadcast.

YouTube Live H.264 bitrate recommendations

Match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate actually sent to YouTube. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not independent image-quality measurements or guarantees. Do not substitute the H.265 or AV1 values on YouTube’s guidance page when sending H.264.

Ingestion resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps

YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed 4 seconds. Audio can use AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends up to 60 fps. Check the YouTube Live encoder settings for current requirements, which can change.

x264 vs. NVENC: which should you use?

Consideration x264 NVENC
Encoding hardware Software encoding on the CPU. Dedicated encoding hardware on a compatible NVIDIA GPU.
When it can fit Your CPU can sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, scene, and preset without overload. Reducing CPU encoding work is useful and your NVIDIA GPU has compatible NVENC hardware.
Key trade-off Heavier presets can do more compression work but demand more CPU. Moves encoding work away from the CPU, though the GPU and its encoder are still part of the system’s resource budget.
Universal image-quality winner? Not established. Results depend on hardware generation, encoder settings, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and scene.

Choose x264 when CPU headroom is available

x264 lets you choose software presets that trade CPU use against compression work. A heavier preset can be demanding; if your system cannot sustain it alongside the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene, OBS may report encoding overload or produce skipped or distorted video. OBS’s x264 guidance dates to 2017, so use it to understand the CPU/preset trade-off, not to replace YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations.

Choose NVENC when compatible hardware can take the load

OBS describes hardware encoding as moving work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. NVENC requires a compatible NVIDIA GPU. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide, dated 2022, notes that earlier hardware generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264 using the default veryfast preset. That qualification is not a blanket ranking of current GPUs against x264: the result depends on the specific generation and settings.

Compare fairly instead of guessing

To decide between x264 and NVENC for your own stream, hold the source, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and scene constant, then compare the results and system load. Include the actual content you plan to stream: a mostly static documentary image, fast camera movement, film grain, and fine detail can stress an encoder differently. The official sources do not provide a controlled, current head-to-head test covering every hardware and setting combination, so do not treat either name as an automatic quality winner.

Set the OBS stream for YouTube

  1. Set your output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings → Video and choose the stream resolution and FPS you intend to send. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations cover up to 2160p60; select the bitrate row matching your actual output.
  2. Open the streaming output settings. Go to Settings → Output. If OBS is in Simple output mode, switch to Advanced to expose encoder controls. Select x264 for CPU software encoding or the available NVIDIA NVENC H.264 option for compatible NVIDIA hardware; exact labels can vary by OBS version and encoder availability.
  3. Set the H.264 rate control and bitrate. Choose CBR and enter the corresponding YouTube-recommended bitrate from the table above. These are recommendations for H.264 ingestion, not settings for a local recording or an uploaded video.
  4. Set keyframes to 2 seconds. Use a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. For an OBS field expressed in frames, a 2-second interval is 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
  5. Configure audio and stream destination. Use AAC or MP3 audio. In Settings → Stream, select YouTube and connect the account or enter the stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or show it on screen.
  6. Test before the event. Start a test stream with representative movement and audio. Check OBS for encoding overload and YouTube’s stream health for connection or ingestion warnings, then adjust settings if needed.

OBS’s advanced NVENC guide is specifically for OBS 31.0 and dated 2024-08-21. It documents an “Ultra High Quality” tuning option for live-action with artifacts such as camera sensor noise, says it is not recommended for gaming content, and notes that it significantly reduces throughput. It is not a universal setting or a current-default recommendation; use it only if you are on the documented OBS version and its trade-offs suit your content.

Check upload capacity and leave headroom

Your outgoing stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. For example, a 17 Mbps H.264 stream at 1080p60 needs at least 21.25 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve that headroom, before accounting for competing traffic or connection variation. A speed test’s download result does not establish upload capacity, and shared-network use can reduce what is available to your stream.

Troubleshooting common stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
OBS reports encoding overloaded, or video skips or distorts. The selected encoder, preset, resolution, FPS, or scene exceeds available system resources. For x264, reduce preset demand or lower resolution/FPS. If a compatible NVIDIA GPU is available, test NVENC to move encoding work off the CPU. Retest with representative content.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate. Available upload bandwidth is below the stream’s needs or varies with network load. Confirm upload rather than download capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, reduce the stream bitrate by choosing a lower resolution/FPS row if necessary, and limit competing traffic.
Stream health flags a mismatch or the picture is not as expected. The output bitrate may not match the actual resolution and FPS, or the wrong codec recommendations may have been applied. Verify the outgoing resolution, FPS, H.264 selection, CBR setting, and matching YouTube table row. Do not apply H.265 or AV1 figures to H.264.
Keyframe-related warning or ingestion issue. The keyframe interval may exceed YouTube’s limit. Set a 2-second interval and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
NVENC is unavailable in OBS. No compatible NVIDIA encoder is present or available to OBS. Use x264 if CPU headroom permits, or confirm that OBS can access the intended NVIDIA GPU and encoder option.

Keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded video

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or desktop, a cloud service avoids leaving OBS, a computer, or a home connection running. StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video stream running from the cloud; it is YouTube-only.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact StreamNeo support. Check StreamNeo pricing for the option available to you. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Respect YouTube’s copyright and live-content rules

Using an encoder or cloud loop does not grant rights to the video or music in a stream. Before broadcasting, confirm you have permission for every recording, track, and other material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements. Replaying content is not automatically safe from copyright claims or other platform enforcement; a technically valid stream can still face content restrictions.
