A stable bitrate reading in OBS does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving the bitrate required for your selected ingest settings—or that the connection delivers it consistently. First identify YouTube’s exact stream-health warning, then compare the incoming resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with YouTube’s live-encoder guidance. If those match, check OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter and diagnose the connection.
Why YouTube and OBS can appear to disagree
OBS’s bitrate display is only one part of the picture. It does not prove that the video matches the resolution and codec selected for YouTube ingest, or that every part of the network path is delivering the stream steadily. YouTube’s warning may concern bitrate, codec, keyframes, frame rate, or another stream issue. The exact message—and OBS’s network statistics—determines what to check next.
Do not lower the bitrate reflexively. YouTube says that, for a non-variable-resolution entry point, the stream should use the bitrate selected for the chosen resolution in Ingestion Settings. If the connection cannot support that resolution, YouTube advises lowering the chosen resolution. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance explains the distinct warnings.
Diagnose the warning in order
-
Read the exact YouTube stream-health message
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health. Note whether YouTube identifies an incorrect bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, frame rate, or another problem. Keep the message handy; different warnings call for different fixes.

-
Compare YouTube’s ingest selection with OBS output
Check the selected resolution in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings and the actual OBS output resolution, frame rate, codec, and video bitrate. Make sure the stream settings match the selected ingest configuration. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not one universal target.
-
Verify the live encoder format
YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the audio codec too if YouTube’s message points to an audio or format issue. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current settings and full recommendation table.

Watch OBS network statistics during a test
In OBS, open View > Stats and monitor network-dropped frames and the connection indicator while streaming. Check the OBS log after the test as well. OBS distinguishes network-dropped frames from other performance problems: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” A stable bitrate display at one moment is not a substitute for watching these measures over time. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the network counter and connection checks.
-
Change one network variable at a time if drops rise
If network-dropped frames increase, test a different ingest server, reduce the video bitrate to a level your connection can sustain reliably, and check whether a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility is interfering. Update network drivers if needed. If you are on Wi-Fi, test over a wired connection. Run another test after each change so you can identify what helped.

Use the stream-key procedure for a start or key error
If YouTube reports a stream-start or key problem rather than a bitrate problem, refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and update the key in your encoder. For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube also recommends refreshing the key. If you use a software sign-in method without a stream key, consult that software’s support. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
Recommended bitrate examples for common settings
YouTube Help’s current live-encoder table gives the following recommended bitrates. These are recommendations for the stated codec, resolution, and frame rate—not a guarantee that a stream will work at that rate on every connection. The page does not display a publication year in the cited material. Check YouTube’s current table for additional resolutions and minimums before changing your settings.

Use the row matching your actual codec and output settings, then compare it with YouTube’s selected ingest settings and your connection’s stable capacity. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its live guidance is for live encoding; do not substitute bitrate recommendations from its separate prerecorded-upload encoding guidance. Check the full YouTube live settings table.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common causes and what to do
- Resolution or bitrate mismatch: Compare OBS output with the selected YouTube ingest resolution and bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen resolution, test a lower resolution and its matching settings.
- Codec, keyframe, or frame-rate warning: Follow the specific warning. Confirm a supported codec, CBR, a two-second recommended keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and a frame rate supported by the selected workflow.
- Network-dropped frames: Try another server, test a sustainable lower bitrate, check VPN or security and network-optimization software, and compare Wi-Fi with wired networking.
- Stream-key or start error: Refresh the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder, or consult the software vendor if using a sign-in workflow without a key.
- OBS performance issue without network drops: Do not assume every OBS problem is a connection problem. Use the OBS log and relevant statistics to distinguish network delivery from other encoder or system issues.
