YouTube Live now lets eligible creators deliver one event in both 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical formats. Viewers use one live URL and one shared chat: people browsing the Shorts feed on the YouTube mobile app generally receive the vertical version, while viewers on conventional watch surfaces see the horizontal stream.
YouTube’s separate side-by-side ads are a mid-roll format that keeps the live picture visible beside an advertisement. They are not guaranteed for every viewer, and they do not give vertical live streams the same advertising capability as horizontal watch-page streams.
What changed—and what has not
YouTube announced the package on September 16, 2025, as part of its Made on YouTube updates. By April 2026, YouTube described simultaneous-format streaming as available, while additional layout controls and encoder options continued to roll out. As of August 16, 2026, the feature is operational but still account- and rollout-dependent; it is safer to say “available to eligible creators” than “available to everyone.”

That distinction matters. Dual streaming solves format and discovery; side-by-side ads solve monetization with less complete interruption. They are separate features with different eligibility and limitations.
How viewers get each version
- Shorts-feed viewers on mobile: generally see the 9:16 version.
- Other viewers: generally see the 16:9 version on YouTube’s regular watch surfaces.
- Chat: both audiences participate in one conversation.
- Notifications and URL: one event identity rather than duplicate streams.
The shared chat reduces duplicated moderation and makes one pinned message or call to action possible. It also brings a new audience into the room with less context, so hosts should explain the event clearly and moderators should expect faster, more mobile-oriented traffic.
Auto mode is convenient, but cropping is the production decision
The simplest setup is YouTube’s first-party Auto option. It creates the vertical output from the horizontal feed, initially by center-cropping it. That works well for a centrally framed presenter, interview, or single-object demonstration. It can fail badly when important information sits at the edges.
A center crop can remove a second speaker, a scoreboard, gameplay HUD elements, lower-thirds, product details, subtitles, slides, or part of a wide stage. Before enabling it, compose the 16:9 shot with a central “safe area,” keep essential text away from the sides, and check the vertical preview.

Where the account has the newer editing canvas, YouTube lists Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked layouts, with zoom and position controls. These controls are not guaranteed to appear on every channel. Eligible creators may also see an Encoder option for a separately supplied vertical feed; YouTube says that support is still rolling out, so do not assume every account can send two fully independent productions.
How to enable dual streaming in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio.
- Click Create → Go live.
- In Live Control Room, choose Stream.
- Open Stream settings and find Dual stream.
- Turn on the dual-stream toggle and leave Auto selected for the simplest workflow.
- If the editing canvas is available, choose a vertical layout and adjust its framing.
- Start the event from YouTube Studio.
You cannot remove the vertical format after the stream has started. If YouTube exposes the editing canvas, its vertical framing can continue to be adjusted while live.
Using a third-party encoder
Where available, choose Encoder in the dual-stream settings, enter the second stream key, and configure the encoder to send correctly formatted horizontal and vertical outputs over RTMP or RTMPS. Test privately or as an unlisted event first. Confirm that the keys are not swapped, the vertical output is genuinely 9:16 rather than letterboxed 16:9, and both feeds belong to the intended event. Treat stream keys as passwords.

The vertical feed can therefore expand discovery without producing equivalent vertical ad revenue. Judge it by total outcomes—watch time, subscribers, memberships, gifts, returning viewers, and later video performance—not by vertical ad impressions alone.

Side-by-side ads: what viewers see
A side-by-side ad is a YouTube mid-roll in which the advertisement occupies adjacent space while the live picture continues. It is less disruptive than replacing the stream completely, but it is still a YouTube-served ad, not a creator-designed sponsorship panel. YouTube chooses the advertiser and delivery opportunity.
For side-by-side ads to be possible, the channel generally needs YouTube monetization eligibility, monetization enabled on the event, and automatic or scheduled mid-rolls enabled. YouTube’s current documentation also says side-by-side ads may not appear when captions are enabled. That is an accessibility trade-off, not a reason to remove captions automatically; organizations should prioritize their audience’s access and any applicable obligations.
Ad delivery is probabilistic. Different viewers can receive ads at different times, and some may receive none because of geography, device, audience status, demand, or YouTube’s delivery decision. Embedded autoplay players have additional ad behavior, including YouTube’s stated rule that ads are turned off when a live player is embedded externally with autoplay.
Mid-roll choices
- Automatic: YouTube selects opportunities; frequency can be set to low, medium, or high. Higher frequency may increase earning potential but can interrupt more often.
- Scheduled: breaks can be set every 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- Manual: the producer inserts breaks from Live Control Room.
YouTube says automatic ad systems can limit disruption for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls after gifts, Super Chats, or Super Stickers, and snooze ads during periods of unusually high live-chat engagement. Those protections are separate from the side-by-side format.

YouTube reports that creators who enabled live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, more than a 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour in a comparison across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported average about automatic mid-roll adoption—not a guaranteed result from side-by-side ads.
Monetization setup
- In Studio, select Create → Go live and create or choose the event.
- Click Edit → Monetization.
- Set monetization to On.
- Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls.
- If choosing automatic, select low, medium, or high frequency.
Other eligibility rules still apply, including YouTube Partner Program status and acceptance of the relevant monetization terms. Vertical viewers do not receive the horizontal stream’s live pre-roll and mid-roll capability under YouTube’s current table.

- Run an unlisted test on mobile Shorts, desktop, and a television or streaming device.
- Check the vertical crop for faces, gameplay controls, scoreboards, tickers, captions, and product details.
- Keep essential graphics within a central safe area or build a custom vertical layout.
- Verify audio sync and readable text in both previews.
- Prepare moderators for one chat serving two different audiences.
- Confirm stream keys and output dimensions when using an encoder.
- Decide whether automatic mid-roll frequency fits the event’s pacing.
- Do not disable captions solely to pursue side-by-side ads without considering accessibility.
Who should use dual streaming?
Good candidates include talking heads, podcasts, interviews with centrally framed guests, mobile-first demonstrations, and events whose main action stays in the middle of the frame. It is also useful when a creator wants Shorts discovery without splitting notifications and moderation across two public broadcasts.

Use caution with gaming interfaces, sports, concerts, panels, newsrooms with tickers, classrooms showing slides, and multi-presenter productions. A wide shot or tiny text may be meaningful on television and unusable in a crop. If the vertical audience needs a different host, camera, graphics package, or editorial emphasis, a separately composed encoder feed—or a separate production—may justify the added complexity.

Analytics and troubleshooting
Do not judge the vertical feed immediately after ending. Combined figures appear in Live Control Room, while vertical-only metrics may arrive roughly 24 hours later. Compare concurrent viewers, watch time, average view duration, chat rate, subscribers, Shorts-feed traffic, and any format-level revenue data YouTube exposes.
If Dual stream is missing
Confirm channel verification and live eligibility, open Live Control Room on desktop, check both stream settings and scheduled-event editing views, and try Auto before diagnosing an encoder. Rollout status can vary by account. Test unlisted rather than creating duplicate public events.
If the crop is wrong
Reframe the camera toward the center, remove edge-dependent graphics, try Fit to phone width or Stacked when offered, or use a separately composed encoder feed if the account supports it.

If side-by-side ads do not appear
Check Partner Program eligibility, accepted Watch Page Monetization terms, stream monetization, mid-roll settings, caption status, and the viewer’s surface. Even when every condition is met, YouTube does not guarantee an ad impression.
Bottom line for creators
Enable dual streaming when your existing production survives a vertical crop—or when YouTube gives you reliable vertical layout controls—and when Shorts discovery is valuable. Start with Auto, test privately, and design around the center safe area. Treat side-by-side ads as an optional, probabilistic mid-roll format, not a promise of higher income. For wide, text-heavy, multi-person, or gameplay-critical events, a true custom vertical production remains the safer choice.
