“No data” is not a diagnosis. YouTube defines the health status noData as meaning its live-streaming backend has no information about the stream’s health. Check the separate stream status, the exact destination and protocol in your FFmpeg command, FFmpeg’s connection logs, and Live Control Room’s health message before deciding what failed.
What “no data” means—and what it does not
YouTube’s Live Streaming API defines noData this way: “YouTube’s live streaming backend servers do not have any information about the stream’s health status.” That describes what YouTube knows about stream health; it does not identify a specific fault in your FFmpeg command or connection. The API reports stream activity separately: active means YouTube is receiving data via the stream, while created, ready, inactive, and error are other stream states. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
Read the health label and stream status together, then compare them with FFmpeg’s output. The label alone cannot establish whether the encoder is pointed at the wrong event, the connection failed, the stream is inactive, or another condition applies.
Check the stream and FFmpeg output in this order
-
Confirm you are looking at the intended stream
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event you intend to broadcast and verify that FFmpeg is sending to that event’s current stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance says the URL tells the encoder where to send the feed and the key lets YouTube accept it; both need to be entered in the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: redact it from screenshots, commands shared publicly, and logs. Inspect the actual output destination and format
Check the output end of your FFmpeg command—not just an input filename or an earlier option—for the destination YouTube supplied and the expected output format. FFmpeg documents RTMP URLs as comprising a server, optional port, application, and stream identifier. Its publishing example uses
-f flvfollowed by an RTMP URL. Compare the complete destination with the current value in Live Control Room; do not assume a remembered path or old key is still valid. FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation · FFmpeg command-line documentationFFmpeg places output options and output URLs after inputs. If a command has multiple inputs or outputs, confirm which URL is the output you mean to publish to. Documentation examples are not a tested command for your particular source, FFmpeg build, or operating system.

Read the protocol and connection errors before changing settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room into the encoder along with the stream key, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. If the log reports an SSL error, check that both the protocol and server use
rtmps; YouTube says specifying port443may resolve an SSL error. For a connection timeout, verify the URL and RTMPS support rather than switching protocols blindly. YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues · FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation -
Compare encoding settings with YouTube’s recommendations
For RTMP/RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current settings table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. For two H.264 examples from that table, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 720p at 30 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not independent test results. YouTube also recommends checking upload speed and testing with representative movement and audio before an event.

Use the preview and the dashboard’s specific message
Live Control Room provides stream health information, specific error messages, and real-time analytics. Preview the feed before going live and check the network setup as YouTube advises. If the status remains unclear, keep the exact FFmpeg command with its key removed, the relevant complete FFmpeg errors, the selected URL and protocol with secrets removed, and the health message from Live Control Room. Together, these details help distinguish a destination, connection, encoding, or dashboard-status issue without treating
noDataas proof of any one cause. YouTube Help: Get help with live streaming · YouTube Help: Live streaming tipsRank #4

RTMP or RTMPS? Use the URL YouTube provides
RTMPS encrypts the connection, and YouTube recommends it. The practical choice is to use the RTMPS URL displayed in Live Control Room if your FFmpeg build supports it. Verify the URL and read the specific connection error first; the mere presence of noData is not a reason to change protocols. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance covers SSL errors and the possible use of port 443. YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
noData with no clear cause |
Read the separate stream status, verify the selected event and destination, then inspect FFmpeg’s logs and the dashboard’s specific health message. The health label by itself does not identify the fault. |
| SSL error | Confirm that the URL and server use rtmps. YouTube says port 443 may resolve an SSL error. |
| Connection timeout | Recheck the URL supplied in Live Control Room and confirm that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS if using the RTMPS URL. |
| FFmpeg appears to run, but the intended event does not receive data | Confirm that the output URL and key belong to the event open in Live Control Room, and check that you are inspecting the command’s output destination rather than an input. |
| Feed connects but health is poor or the preview is unstable | Compare codec, CBR, keyframe interval, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen resolution and codec. Check upload capacity and test representative audio and motion. |

It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
