For YouTube Live in OBS, select CBR and set the video bitrate target to YouTube’s recommendation for your ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. In OBS’s documented NVENC controls, the maximum-bitrate value is used for VBR and ignored in CBR mode, so it is not a second active ceiling. Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream with headroom, then test with representative audio and motion before going live.
What to set in OBS for YouTube Live
Choose your output resolution and frame rate first, then select the bitrate recommendation for the codec OBS will send to YouTube. YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendations are different from its recommendations for uploading a finished video. The table below reproduces YouTube Help’s live-stream recommendations; the page was accessed October 3, 2026, and does not state a publication year.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate | H.264 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are recommended video rates, not total upload rates. YouTube’s table also gives minimums: for 1080p60, 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, or 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for H.264; for 1080p30, 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1/H.265, or 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264. Use the row and codec that match the stream OBS actually sends. YouTube says it detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
CBR target versus maximum bitrate
CBR target
CBR means constant bitrate: set the video bitrate target to the value you intend the encoder to maintain, subject to the capacity and stability of your connection. For YouTube Live, its encoder settings call for CBR. There is no universal target independent of codec, resolution and frame rate.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Maximum bitrate in NVENC
OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options documentation defines maxBitRate as the maximum encoded bitrate for VBR and says it is ignored in CBR mode. If you selected CBR in this documented NVENC implementation, the maximum field is not a second active cap; the CBR target is the relevant rate-control value. This behavior is specific to the documented NVENC parameter, not a rule to assume for every OBS encoder or version. The documentation applies to options introduced starting with OBS 31.0 and is dated August 21, 2024. OBS Advanced NVENC Options.
Choose a rate your connection and computer can sustain
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% of upload capacity unused. The stream’s total outgoing bitrate—including audio—must fit within available upload bandwidth, and a headline speed-test result does not guarantee a stable connection throughout a broadcast. Assess stable upload performance and leave room for network variation rather than setting video bitrate equal to your full upload rate. YouTube Help: streaming tips.

Balance resolution and frame rate against system load
Pick a resolution and frame rate your hardware can encode reliably. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can demand more system resources than 30 fps, and that output resolution should match the stream output. A higher row in YouTube’s table is not automatically the better choice if the encoder or connection cannot sustain it. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set the keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. This is separate from the bitrate target: set both deliberately in the encoder controls, using the labels available for your selected encoder. YouTube Help’s encoder settings.

Test before the broadcast
- Set the intended output. In OBS, choose the resolution, frame rate and encoder you plan to use for the actual stream.
- Use CBR and the matching bitrate. Select the YouTube table’s recommendation for that codec and output format, provided the rate fits within sustainable upload capacity with headroom.
- Set a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not exceed YouTube’s 4-second limit.
- Run a test with representative content. Include audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, rather than testing only a static screen or silence. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and video motion.
- Check stream health and messages. Watch for warnings and dropped frames during the test and during the event; adjust before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and connection problems
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot maintain as possible causes. Lower the video bitrate, then test again. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal guaranteed setting; retain headroom for audio and network variation. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- The configured bitrate exceeds reliable upload capacity: Lower the video bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then use the corresponding YouTube recommendation as your reference. Do not treat download speed as proof of upload capacity.
- The maximum field appears to conflict with the CBR target: For the documented NVENC control, maximum bitrate is ignored in CBR mode. Confirm which encoder OBS is using before applying that explanation to another encoder.
- The stream is technically stable but looks poor: Confirm that you selected the bitrate row for the actual ingest codec and output resolution/frame rate; then test with motion resembling the real content. A static test may not reveal how representative footage will behave.
