YouTube Live Bitrate Settings for a Prerecorded Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a prerecorded video streamed to YouTube Live, set your encoder’s outgoing live feed to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for its resolution, frame rate and codec. For 1080p at 30 fps, that is 10 Mbps with AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps with H.264; at 60 fps, use 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265 or 17 Mbps with H.264. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and RTMPS, and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the full stream bitrate.

Those are live-ingestion settings, not a required bitrate for the video file stored on disk. YouTube’s current guidance was accessed October 3, 2026; its Help pages do not display publication dates.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec

Choose the row matching the resolution and frame rate your encoder sends to YouTube, then use the column for the codec it actually encodes. YouTube lists minimum and recommended live-ingestion rates in its live encoder settings guidance. The recommendations below are for the incoming live stream, not the prerecorded source file.

Outgoing resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
2160p (4K), 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps 7 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

These values are YouTube’s current recommendations accessed October 3, 2026, not results from an independent test. Your encoder’s codec determines which column applies. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes an incoming live stream into formats for different playback devices and network conditions; most creators do not need to send separate bitrates for each viewer device.

Which bitrate should you use for a prerecorded video?

Match the outgoing stream, not just the source file

A prerecorded video can be sent through an encoder as a YouTube Live feed. Set the encoder’s output to a resolution and frame rate that suit the source and your upload connection, then use the corresponding live-ingestion recommendation above. The bitrate of the file stored on your computer is a separate matter: YouTube’s live encoder table does not prescribe a required disk-file bitrate for prerecorded material.

Balance quality, motion and upload capacity

Higher resolutions and 60 fps call for higher live bitrates than 1080p30 or 720p30. Choose the recommended rate when your connection can sustain it; a stable, lower-resolution stream is preferable to a target that repeatedly exceeds real upload capacity. Download speed does not establish upload capacity.

Measure upload performance under conditions similar to the planned stream. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total streaming bitrate. That total includes audio as well as video, so allow for both when checking headroom. YouTube’s encoder guide and streaming tips provide the underlying recommendations.

Codec, HDR and latency considerations

YouTube’s live settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. The recommended rates differ by codec, so do not select a target based on resolution alone. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube identifies H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.

The 2160p/4K low-latency option is unavailable: YouTube says 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency. In general, lower latency can increase playback buffering, and YouTube notes that low latency matters less when audience interaction is not part of the stream.

Configure the encoder and start the prerecorded stream

  1. Prepare the video and choose output settings. Confirm the source plays correctly, note its resolution and frame rate, and select a suitable outgoing resolution, frame rate and codec in your encoder. Use the matching bitrate recommendation in the table. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth as YouTube recommends.
  2. Set the rate control and keyframes. Choose constant bitrate (CBR) and set a keyframe interval of 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  3. Choose the ingestion protocol. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Set the encoder to use the stream URL and protocol provided for the event in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room.
  4. Create or select the YouTube live event. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room. YouTube recommends automatic detection of resolution and frame rate by default. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual stream-resolution settings.
  5. Enter the stream URL and key in the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in a recording, screenshot or public message. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance describes the setup workflow.
  6. Preview before going live. Check the incoming feed in YouTube’s preview and confirm that the picture, audio and playback are correct. Test the actual prerecorded file, including its sound and continuity, rather than relying only on a sample clip.
  7. Test the connection and monitor stream health. Test under realistic network conditions, leave the recommended upload headroom, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event. YouTube explicitly advises testing before starting a live stream.

Check the content and live-stream setup before broadcast

  • Rights: Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video and its music or other included material. A prerecorded format does not remove copyright concerns.
  • Channel and event readiness: Confirm your channel is able to live stream and that the intended event and visibility settings are correct in YouTube Studio before starting the encoder.
  • Playback: Check that the file has no unintended gaps, frozen frames, missing audio or abrupt ending, and that the encoder can play it continuously for the planned duration.
  • Stream key security: Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
  • Audience experience: Choose latency with the viewing experience in mind. If viewers do not need to interact in real time, lower latency may offer little benefit and can increase buffering.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and playback problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Stream health reports instability, dropped frames or connection problems The outgoing bitrate, including audio, is too close to or above reliable upload capacity; the connection may also be inconsistent. Measure upload under realistic conditions, preserve about 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, and lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate if necessary.
The stream looks worse than expected despite a high-quality source file The encoder’s outgoing settings may be too low, or the selected bitrate may not match the output codec, resolution and frame rate. Check the actual encoder output and choose the matching row and codec column in YouTube’s live bitrate table. The source file’s stored bitrate is not the live-ingestion target.
YouTube reports a keyframe or encoder-setting issue The keyframe interval or rate control may not meet YouTube’s guidance. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
The event preview is black, silent or not playing continuously The wrong source, audio routing or playback behavior may be selected in the encoder. Preview and test the actual prerecorded file. Verify its image, audio and uninterrupted playback before starting the event.
The encoder cannot connect to YouTube The stream URL, protocol or stream key may be incorrect or no longer valid. Copy the current URL and key from the event setup in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS settings, and keep the key private.
4K low-latency mode is unavailable YouTube does not offer the 2160p low-latency option. Use normal latency for a 4K stream, or choose a lower output resolution if low latency is essential.
