For 720p at 60 fps on YouTube Live, set video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1/H.265 if your BSNL connection can sustain the stream with upload headroom. YouTube lists lower minimums—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but those are encoder minimums, not a guarantee of stable streaming. The right setting depends on measured upload performance at your location, not the BSNL name or your plan’s advertised download speed.

These are YouTube Help’s live-streaming encoder figures, current guidance accessed in 2026. The recommended bitrate is for video; allow additional capacity for audio and any other stream using the connection. The minimum is not a target for reliability: lowering bitrate can reduce image detail, and the result still depends on a steady upload connection.
Do not substitute YouTube’s prerecorded-upload recommendation of 7.5 Mbps for 720p high-frame-rate video. Upload encoding and live encoder settings are separate tables; this question is about the live settings.
Can your BSNL connection sustain it?
There is no universal bitrate for all BSNL subscribers. Upload performance can vary by location, plan, network conditions, and household use, and YouTube’s guidance does not establish a BSNL-specific speed or capability. Measure your actual outbound upload speed rather than relying on advertised download speed: download capacity is often higher than upload capacity.

YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. In practice, the connection should have sustained upload capacity of roughly 1.2 times the combined bitrate of the stream, including audio and any simultaneous primary or backup stream. Treat the speed test as a practical check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
- Test using the same connection and setup you intend to stream with.
- Check under typical household and gaming load; other people and devices can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder.
- Use a test scene with representative game movement and audio, not just an idle menu.
- If upload speed varies or does not leave the recommended headroom, lower the video bitrate and test again.
Set up the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder guidance includes RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.

- Choose 1280 Ă— 720 resolution and 60 fps in your streaming software for a 720p60 broadcast.
- Select a codec and starting bitrate. Use 8 Mbps video for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 if measured upload capacity supports it with headroom. Otherwise, reduce the bitrate and repeat your test.
- Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not set the interval above 4 seconds.
- Configure audio as AAC or MP3 and include its bitrate when checking your total upload requirement.
- Use RTMPS where available and set SDR color space to Rec. 709.
- Run a private or unlisted test before the event and check YouTube’s stream health while the game is moving and audio is active.
When entering a stream key in your encoder, use the key for the YouTube live event you intend to broadcast and keep it private. A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
Troubleshooting unstable 720p60 streams
- Stream health reports connection problems or the stream drops: The upload may be unstable, saturated, or interrupted. Test outbound speed again under typical load, reduce video bitrate, and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
- The encoder bitrate looks acceptable, but viewers see interruptions: Check whether other devices or a backup stream are consuming upload bandwidth. YouTube’s capacity guidance applies to total stream traffic, not just the video setting.
- Fast gameplay looks soft or blocky: A lower bitrate may not preserve as much detail during motion. If your upload connection can sustain the recommended codec-specific rate plus headroom, test it; otherwise prioritize stable delivery rather than raising bitrate beyond capacity.
- The stream does not connect as expected: Confirm that the encoder is using the intended YouTube stream key and a supported RTMP/RTMPS connection, then check the live control room’s stream health.
