Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a 720p60 YouTube Live stream, set the video bitrate to 8 Mbps with H.264 or 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s minimums are lower—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265—but they are not the recommended targets. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and enough stable upload capacity to sustain the stream.
Recommended 720p60 YouTube Live settings
| Encoder codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s published live-ingest recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026. Choose a codec your encoder and system support; do not assume a lower minimum will provide the same margin as the recommended target. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds.
Configure your encoder for 720p60
- Set the video size and frame rate. Choose 1280Ă—720 progressive output at 60 frames per second.
- Select the codec and bitrate. Use 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 as the video ingest target, if supported by your setup.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Choose CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not set the interval above 4 seconds.
- Use secure ingest transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Check outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Its guidance says to use upload speed—not download speed—as the comparison and to account for both streams if you send primary and backup feeds. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.
- Test with representative gameplay. Run a private or unlisted test with the audio and motion you expect in the real session, then inspect stream health during the broadcast. A speed test alone does not establish that the connection will deliver a stable stream. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for viewers’ devices and network conditions. YouTube encoder guidance.
Is 6 Mbps enough? Do you need 8 Mbps?
It depends on the ingest codec. Six Mbps is YouTube’s recommended 720p60 target for AV1 or H.265. For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps; 6 Mbps is above its listed 3 Mbps minimum but below its recommended target. Use the codec-specific target when your connection can sustain it with upload headroom. If it cannot, test the actual stream and address upload stability rather than treating a brief speed-test result as a guarantee.
Live ingest bitrate is not upload-video bitrate
Do not confuse the bitrate used to send a live feed to YouTube with the recommended encoding bitrate for an uploaded highlight file. For 720p high-frame-rate H.264 uploads, YouTube recommends 7.5 Mbps; for 720p60 H.264 live ingest, it recommends 8 Mbps. These figures apply to different stages and workflows. Turn live gaming moments into highlights and a playlist
Mark and create highlights
- During the stream, mark useful moments so you can find them later.
- In YouTube Studio, create a highlight, trim it around the moment, set its title, privacy and description, then create it.
- If you are streaming alone, mark moments while playing and edit the highlights afterward. With a team, someone can create highlights during the broadcast. YouTube Help: create and manage clips or highlights.
Organize highlights in a playlist
- In YouTube Studio, create a playlist and set its title, description and visibility.
- Add the highlight videos from your channel library, then arrange them in the desired order.
- Change the order later or add videos using search, a URL or your library. YouTube Help: create and manage playlists.
Keep a separate recording for long streams
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream that lasts under 12 hours. For streams longer than 12 hours, the archive may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup, particularly if you need the complete session for editing or highlights. YouTube Help: archive live streams.

Troubleshooting bitrate and delivery
- Stream health reports interruptions: Check outbound upload capacity and network stability; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and retest with gameplay-like motion and audio.
- The encoder cannot sustain the selected target: Confirm the selected codec is supported by your encoder and system. Test the codec-specific recommended bitrate rather than relying on the minimum figure.
- Keyframe setting is unclear: Set a 2-second interval and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds.
- Backup feed is enabled: Include the backup stream’s bitrate when checking available upload capacity.
- The complete long broadcast is missing from the archive: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured automatically; use a local recording as backup.
- Highlight or playlist is hard to find later: Mark moments during the stream and create highlights in Studio; then add them to a playlist and set its visibility and order.
