Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo keep a playlist job moving past an unavailable video, use yt-dlp’s playlist continuation behavior: --no-abort-on-error tells it to continue to the next video after a download error and is documented as the default. That can skip a failed playlist entry; it does not guarantee that FFmpeg stays running or that viewers see an uninterrupted YouTube live stream. Those are separate problems that require explicit handling and testing in your pipeline.
First identify what needs to stay alive
“Keep the stream alive” can mean three different things. A download queue can continue to later playlist entries; an FFmpeg process can remain running; and the publishing connection to YouTube can remain open with continuous viewer playback. Success at the first does not prove success at the other two.
- For a download queue: configure and verify yt-dlp’s playlist error handling.
- For the encoder: supervise how each item is handed to FFmpeg, and decide whether the process continues, restarts, or receives a replacement input.
- For viewers: test the real output and destination for gaps, disconnections, and media compatibility. The documented playlist option does not promise uninterrupted playback.
Continue to the next playlist video with yt-dlp
The yt-dlp README describes --no-abort-on-error as: “Continue with next video on download errors; e.g. to skip unavailable videos in a playlist (default)” (yt-dlp README). If a playlist download stops at one failed item, first check your installed version and configuration: the documented default may have been overridden, or the invocation may not be processing the playlist as expected.
Check the command and playlist selection
- Confirm you passed a playlist URL or otherwise selected the playlist. A video URL can also be associated with a playlist, and yt-dlp has playlist-selection controls. Check that your command is traversing the entries you intend, rather than downloading only one video. See the yt-dlp playlist selection documentation.
- Check the installed yt-dlp version and loaded configuration. If observed behavior differs from the documented option, inspect configuration for conflicting settings and confirm the behavior for your installed version. The project’s FAQ recommends current-version diagnostics when preparing reproducible problem reports.
- For a download job, explicitly set the continuation behavior if you want it visible in the command: add
--no-abort-on-errorto the yt-dlp invocation. Then review its output: verify that the unavailable entry is reported and that later playlist entries are attempted. - Test a representative failure. A private or removed video, an unavailable format, a transient network or fragment failure, and an FFmpeg or destination error are different failure classes. The option’s documented intent does not establish recovery from every one.
Do not treat the error options as interchangeable
--no-abort-on-error is documented specifically as continuing with the next video after a download error. --ignore-errors is described separately for download and postprocessing errors. Choose based on the error scope you need; stacking both options is not a substitute for understanding which component failed, and neither option guarantees that a separate FFmpeg process or live publishing connection will survive.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
yt-dlp also documents playlist controls that can stop traversal after a configured number of failures. If later entries are not being attempted, check whether such a threshold or another playlist-selection setting is affecting the run. These controls govern playlist traversal, not FFmpeg reconnection. See the playlist selection documentation.
Where FFmpeg fits—and where it does not
FFmpeg reads inputs specified with -i and writes outputs; its command-line options generally apply to the next specified file, so option order matters. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes FFmpeg as a media converter that reads inputs, filters or transcodes them, and writes output formats. It does not make an upstream YouTube playlist into a fault-tolerant queue simply because FFmpeg is in the pipeline.

Assign playlist enumeration and skip-or-retry decisions to yt-dlp or an orchestration wrapper. Assign media processing, encoding, and output to FFmpeg. If yt-dlp exits or closes an input after one item fails, FFmpeg cannot infer by itself which playlist item should come next.
Design a playlist-to-live workflow deliberately
For a real-time output, a wrapper can resolve one playlist item at a time, supply a valid input to FFmpeg, catch an item-level failure, and continue to the next item while managing FFmpeg’s input and output lifecycle. This is an engineering pattern, not a guaranteed command recipe: the right design depends on your versions, formats, encoding choices, and destination.

Decide what happens at each transition
- On an unavailable item: skip it or retry it according to your policy, then record the failure so it is visible in logs.
- Between items: decide whether a gap is acceptable, whether to provide a slate or other valid media, and how timestamps should continue. Do not assume differently encoded or timed items will join seamlessly.
- At FFmpeg’s input boundary: choose and test whether the process receives successive inputs through a managed input, is restarted for each item, or uses another wrapper-controlled method. Each choice has implications for transitions and the output connection.
- At the publishing destination: verify whether the connection stays open through item changes and through a skipped or failed item. A live encoder can be healthy while its publishing connection has dropped, or vice versa.
yt-dlp’s FAQ shows streaming a single video to a player through standard output with -o - (yt-dlp stdout FAQ). That example is not an end-to-end guarantee for multiple playlist videos with differing codecs, unavailable formats, variable durations, or per-item failures. Do not infer seamless multi-video live streaming from a successful single-video pipe.
Test the actual pipeline before relying on it
- Record the yt-dlp and FFmpeg versions, the exact command, relevant configuration, and the playlist selection.
- Run a short test with an intentionally unavailable or otherwise representative failed entry between playable entries.
- Check logs to confirm the failure was identified, later playlist entries were attempted, and the wrapper applied the intended skip or retry policy.
- Observe FFmpeg’s process and input behavior through the transition. Confirm that the media after the failed item is actually processed.
- Check the destination and viewer playback separately. Look for a publishing disconnect, a gap, timestamp problems, or an incompatible transition.
- Repeat with the failure class that matters in production. A missing video test does not establish recovery from a network interruption, unsupported format, or output error.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely scope | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The job stops at a missing or private playlist entry | Playlist traversal or yt-dlp configuration | Confirm playlist selection, check the installed yt-dlp version and configuration, and use --no-abort-on-error for continuation to the next video. Verify later entries are attempted. |
| yt-dlp continues, but FFmpeg exits | Input handoff or wrapper supervision | Inspect how the wrapper handles a failed item, closes or replaces FFmpeg inputs, and responds to process exit. Playlist continuation alone does not supervise FFmpeg. |
| FFmpeg stays up, but the live connection drops | Output or destination behavior | Check FFmpeg’s output logs and the destination’s connection state independently. Add and test a recovery policy appropriate to the actual output; the yt-dlp playlist flag does not provide one. |
| The next video plays with a gap, timestamp jump, or media error | Transition, timing, or compatibility | Check codecs, formats, timestamps, and the wrapper’s handling of boundaries. A valid next input does not guarantee a seamless transition. |
| The playlist ends after repeated failures | Playlist traversal settings | Review playlist selection and any configured failure threshold that can stop traversal. Confirm the behavior with the installed version. |
| A single-video stdout test works, but the playlist stream does not | Multi-item pipeline behavior | Treat the single-video example only as evidence for that input path. Test item enumeration, handoff, transitions, and destination continuity as separate stages. |
