For RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC or MP3 audio. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings; YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so the setting does not guarantee identical playback encoding on every device or network.
Recommended audio settings for a playlist stream
YouTube’s published stereo recommendation applies to a music playlist stream just as it does to other stereo live streams. The guidance does not specify a separate bitrate for playlists or for audio paired with a static image.
| Use case | Audio bitrate | Sample rate | Codec and protocol notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo music | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz | RTMP/RTMPS supports AAC or MP3; HLS lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. [YouTube encoder settings; YouTube HLS guidance] |
| 5.1 surround, when the program is genuinely mixed for 5.1 | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz | RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC for 5.1; HLS lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. [YouTube encoder settings; YouTube HLS guidance] |
Use the 5.1 row only if your source and playback chain actually carry surround audio. For a normal stereo playlist, 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz is the applicable recommendation. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that choosing a higher bitrate than recommended improves the quality ultimately delivered to viewers, because the live stream is transcoded. [YouTube encoder settings; How YouTube transcodes live streams]
Choose codec and protocol together
RTMP or RTMPS
For these ingest protocols, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for audio. If you are sending 5.1 surround, use AAC. Choose the protocol and codec supported by your encoder and the YouTube ingest configuration rather than assuming that every codec works with every protocol. [YouTube encoder settings]

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3, and repeats the stereo recommendation of 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz and the 5.1 recommendation of 384 Kbps at 48 kHz. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so consider latency as well as codec support when selecting an ingest method. [YouTube HLS guidance]
The cited YouTube guidance gives supported codecs and recommended bitrates, but does not compare AAC and MP3 sound quality at equal settings. Use a codec your encoder and chosen ingest protocol support.

Check the full stream, not just the audio number
- Set the audio format. For stereo music, configure 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz in the encoder or streaming service. Confirm it is sending stereo rather than an unintended mono or surround configuration.
- Match the ingest protocol. Check the encoder’s audio codec against YouTube’s listed options for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS. If using 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, select AAC.
- Test before the scheduled stream. YouTube recommends testing in advance with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health during the stream. A short test can expose wrong channel layout, clipping, dropouts, or a protocol/codec mismatch. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate being sent. Account for both audio and video bitrate, plus any other traffic using the connection; do not treat the 20% as an audio-only allowance. [YouTube encoder settings; YouTube stream health guidance]
A hardware encoder is not required to reach YouTube’s recommended stereo audio setting. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but the published 128 Kbps stereo recommendation is a setting, not a hardware requirement. Music rights can interrupt an otherwise healthy stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may display a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A rights holder that has licensed content for a stream may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to proceed. [YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams]

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on providers to hold the rights needed for live content, including applicable music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say Creator Music tracks cannot be used in live streams under those terms. These platform rules do not determine whether a particular license covers your recording, stream, territory or use; verify the rights for the exact music and intended live use before broadcasting. Troubleshooting common audio problems
- Audio sounds weak or the encoder bitrate differs from the recommendation: check that stereo is set to 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Confirm the encoder is using the intended audio source and channel layout.
- No audio or an ingest error: verify that the selected codec is supported for the chosen protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC or MP3; for HLS, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3. [YouTube encoder settings; YouTube HLS guidance]
- 5.1 does not work over RTMP/RTMPS: confirm that the encoder is sending AAC and that the program is actually configured for 5.1, at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Audio or video is unstable: run a representative test, inspect YouTube stream health, and ensure the upload connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over total outgoing bitrate. [YouTube stream health guidance]
- The stream is interrupted despite valid encoder settings: check YouTube’s live copyright notice and resolve rights or Content ID allowlisting issues with the relevant rights holder. Bitrate settings do not grant permission to use music. [YouTube copyright guidance]
