YouTube Live Bitrate for 4K 30fps Pre-Recorded Videos

For 4K/30 fps prerecorded video sent to YouTube Live, use the recommendation for the actual ingest codec: 42 Mbps H.264 or 30 Mbps HEVC/AV1.

If you send a finished 4K/30 fps video to YouTube Live through an encoder, YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate depends on the codec: 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. These are YouTube’s recommendations for live ingest, not a guarantee of identical image quality across codecs. The settings below apply to a live stream carrying a prerecorded file—not an ordinary video upload.

Recommended bitrate for a 4K/30 fps YouTube live stream

YouTube Help’s live encoder settings list these 2160p/4K recommendations. Choose the row for the video codec your live encoder actually sends to YouTube; the source file’s codec alone does not determine the ingest codec.

Live ingest codec Recommended bitrate Listed minimum
H.264 42 Mbps 11 Mbps
H.265/HEVC 30 Mbps 8 Mbps
AV1 30 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings. The minimum is not the target to choose when aiming for YouTube’s recommended settings. AV1 and HEVC have a lower listed recommendation than H.264, but that does not establish that either will always look better or work with every encoder and ingest route.

Do not confuse live ingest with a regular video upload

If you upload a prerecorded 4K video as a normal YouTube video, rather than sending it through a live encoder, YouTube’s separate upload encoding recommendations say 35–45 Mbps for 2160p at 24, 25, or 30 fps. That upload range is not the live-stream bitrate recommendation. Identify the workflow before selecting a number.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live

For a prerecorded file sent as a live stream, configure the encoder and stream path for live ingest. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.

  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Use the intended 30 fps output. YouTube’s listed guidance has a 60 fps ceiling.
  • Resolution: 2160p (4K), if your encoder, connection, and ingest setup support it.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit for SDR.
  • HDR color: YouTube identifies H.265/HEVC and 10-bit for HDR in the described settings; AV1 is not supported for HDR in those settings.

At 4K/2160p, YouTube says low-latency mode is unavailable; the stream is optimized for quality and set to normal latency. A prerecorded source does not change that live-stream limitation.

Plan enough stable upload bandwidth

The relevant capacity is reliable outbound upload bandwidth, not the download speed advertised by your internet plan. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, 20% above a 42 Mbps video bitrate is about 50.4 Mbps before audio, other network traffic, or fluctuations are included. This is arithmetic using YouTube’s recommended margin, not a separate YouTube-published speed threshold.

Shared network use or interruptions can reduce the upload capacity actually available to the stream. YouTube advises testing the connection, testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the stream, and monitoring stream health during the event.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Confirm the ingest codec and bitrate. Check what your encoder sends to YouTube, then select the matching 4K/30 row above. Do not infer the live ingest codec just from the file you uploaded to the encoder.
  2. Run an upload speed test. Check reliable upload capacity at the location and time you plan to stream, and allow headroom for the full stream bitrate and competing network use.
  3. Run a pre-live test. Send a representative portion with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static menu or silent, still frame may not reveal the same problems.
  4. Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s live control room indicators during the event and respond to warnings by checking encoder output and available upload capacity.

Common bitrate problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports insufficient bandwidth: Available upload capacity may be below the total outgoing bitrate or may be fluctuating. Reduce competing network traffic, verify the encoder’s bitrate, or lower the stream bitrate or output resolution until the connection can sustain it.
  • Image quality is poor despite using the recommended bitrate: Confirm that the live ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate match the row you selected. YouTube’s recommendations are not a promise of identical quality in all content or encoder configurations.
  • A low-latency option is missing at 4K: This is expected under YouTube’s documented settings; 4K/2160p is normal latency.
  • HDR settings do not match the intended stream: Check the encoder’s codec and bit depth against YouTube’s documented HDR guidance: H.265/HEVC and 10-bit. AV1 is not supported for HDR in those settings.

Keep a prerecorded stream running without a computer at home

For a one-off or manually operated live stream, the encoder settings above are the key bitrate guidance. If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your prerecorded video or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
