Parents can now set a supervised teen’s daily YouTube Shorts feed limit to zero. YouTube says that once the limit is reached, the teen cannot keep scrolling the Shorts feed for the rest of the day. This is a feed-scrolling restriction—not a confirmed ban on every Short viewed by every route, and it applies only within a supervised account.
What YouTube’s updated control does
YouTube first offered a daily limit for Shorts-feed scrolling as a time-management tool. It later said parents would be able to manage the limit for supervised children and teens. YouTube’s current help page says parents can set a supervised teen’s limit to zero beginning in March 2026. When the limit is reached, scrolling the Shorts feed is blocked for the rest of that day; it resets the next morning. YouTube’s Shorts-limit instructions describe the restriction as applying to the feed.
YouTube’s earlier announcement described the parental limit as non-dismissable for supervised children and teens. That description concerns the Shorts-feed limit; it should not be read as a claim that every possible way of watching a Short is blocked. YouTube’s October 2025 announcement set out that earlier characterization.
Who can use the zero-minute limit?
The teen needs a supervised YouTube account linked to a parent through Family Center. It does not automatically apply to an ordinary, unsupervised teen account. A parent and teen must agree to link their accounts, and YouTube says either can later turn off supervision. YouTube’s supervised-teen setup page explains the arrangement.

Supervised accounts for younger children are a separate account type. The age threshold for child accounts depends on the country or region. YouTube’s child-account setup information covers those accounts.
How to link a teen account
From the YouTube mobile app
- Sign in to YouTube as the parent.
- Tap You, then Settings.
- Tap Family Center, then Invite a teen.
- Tap Create invite.
- Ask the teen to scan the QR code or open the invitation link to complete the linking process.
YouTube’s mobile setup instructions provide the invitation flow.

From a computer
- Sign in to YouTube and click the parent’s profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to Family Center and select Manage kids profiles and features for teens.
- Choose Invite a teen, then Create invite.
- Have the teen scan the QR code or open the invitation link.

How to set the Shorts feed limit to zero
- Open Family Center in YouTube.
- Select the teen’s account.
- Choose Time management.
- Set the daily Shorts feed limit to zero.
YouTube documents the teen limit and Family Center controls in its Shorts-limit instructions. Menu names and availability can vary by platform, language, app version, and rollout; check YouTube’s current help page if a label is missing.

What zero does—and what YouTube has not confirmed
At the limit, YouTube says the teen is told the daily allowance has been reached and cannot continue scrolling the Shorts feed until the next day’s reset. The help documentation does not specify whether zero also prevents playback when a Short is opened through other routes.
- A Short opened from search results or a direct link.
- A Short reached from a creator’s channel page or watch history.
- A Short embedded on another site.
- Short-form videos accessed through another account, app, or device.
Those cases are not confirmed as blocked by the cited guidance. If the distinction matters to your family, check the behavior on the teen’s actual account and devices rather than assuming zero means no Short can play anywhere.

Other YouTube controls solve different problems
Family Center includes additional controls for supervised accounts. They can complement a Shorts limit, but they are not interchangeable:

YouTube also provides some visibility into a supervised teen’s channel activity, including milestones such as uploading a video or Short, starting a livestream, or changing privacy settings. Its Family Center guidance describes these controls. YouTube explains the difference between supervised experiences and Restricted Mode in its overview of content settings.

When this control may not be enough
The zero limit is a YouTube-specific measure for the supervised account, not a complete device-use lock. Check that the teen is signed in to the account you supervise on each device; a different Google account may not have the same setting. If the goal is to manage access across multiple apps, browsers, or devices—or to restrict YouTube altogether—consider device-level family controls or a separately administered parental-control service. Their protections depend on the device, administrator permissions, and product.
YouTube says supervised accounts are for personal accounts and are not currently available to schools or educational organizations. Some YouTube time-management reminders also do not run during offline viewing or when casting from a phone, so do not assume every time control behaves identically in those situations. Alternatives for different family goals
YouTube Kids
YouTube Kids is a separate, more limited content environment intended for children. It is not the same as supervising a teen’s regular YouTube account. Learn about the distinctions in YouTube’s account and content-setting overview.
Google Family Link
Family Link is Google’s family-management route for broader account and device oversight. It is separate from the Shorts-specific setting in YouTube Family Center. Visit Google Family Link for its current scope and setup information.
