Premium Lite removes ads from most eligible non-music videos, while ads can remain on music, Shorts, and search or browsing.
Premium Lite is best understood as a lower-cost, partial ad-removal plan rather than a replacement for full YouTube Premium. YouTube added downloads and background play for most eligible videos in February 2026, but music and Shorts remain outside those features, and YouTube Music Premium is not included.
Key takeaways
- YouTube Premium Lite launched in the United States at $7.99 per month on March 5, 2025, but later U.S. reporting put the price at $8.99 per month in April 2026.
- Premium Lite removes YouTube-served ads from most eligible mainstream videos, but ads can still appear on music content, Shorts, and search or browsing surfaces.
- Background play and downloads became available for most eligible videos in February 2026, but those features exclude Shorts and music content.
- Premium Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium, queuing, Continue Watching, Jump ahead, or the full plan’s high-quality audio and video features.
- Full YouTube Premium is the better choice for viewers who want all-video ad removal, offline and background playback for music, and YouTube Music Premium.
What is the difference between YouTube Premium and Premium Lite?
YouTube Premium Lite is a cheaper, limited membership that removes ads from most eligible YouTube and YouTube Kids videos, while full YouTube Premium is designed to cover all videos, music content, offline viewing, background playback, and YouTube Music Premium. Premium Lite is therefore a selective ad-reduction plan, not a fully ad-free YouTube subscription.

How much did YouTube Premium Lite cost at launch, and what does it cost now?

That $7.99 figure is historical rather than the safest current U.S. price. TechCrunch reported on April 10, 2026 that the U.S. Premium Lite price increased from $7.99 to $8.99 per month for new and current subscribers, with notice and billing-cycle changes. A YouTube spokesperson told TechCrunch: “We’re updating the price for YouTube Premium plans in the US for the first time since 2023 to continue delivering a high-quality experience that supports creators and artists on YouTube.”
Prices can depend on the user’s country, account, and the purchase path. Before subscribing, use YouTube’s Premium Lite membership help page and the membership page it references to see the price shown for your account and location.
Is YouTube Premium Lite really ad-free?
YouTube Premium Lite is not completely ad-free. Premium Lite removes ads from many eligible videos in categories such as gaming, fashion, beauty, and news, but YouTube says ads may still appear on music content, Shorts, and when you search or browse YouTube.
The distinction matters for viewers who mainly watch documentaries, commentary, explainers, or other conventional long-form videos: those videos may receive the main Lite benefit, but the surrounding YouTube experience can still contain advertising. A viewer who wants every video and every YouTube surface to be ad-free should choose full YouTube Premium instead.
Does YouTube Premium Lite include Shorts?
YouTube Premium Lite does not guarantee an ad-free Shorts experience. Ads may appear while watching Shorts, and Premium Lite’s background-play and download features do not cover Shorts.

Premium Lite can still reduce interruptions on eligible long-form videos, but Shorts-heavy viewers should not treat Lite as a complete solution to YouTube advertising or as a way to save Shorts for offline viewing.
Can you download videos with YouTube Premium Lite?
Yes. YouTube added downloads and background play to Premium Lite beginning February 24, 2026, with the rollout continuing over the following weeks in locations where Premium Lite was available. YouTube’s current documentation says both features are available for most videos, but not for Shorts or music content. The YouTube announcement about Premium Lite downloads and background play describes the feature expansion.
Music-related exclusions are broader than ordinary music videos alone. YouTube’s documentation excludes official or premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user-generated videos containing material from YouTube’s music partners. Downloads are for offline viewing inside YouTube, not permanent copies that can be exported as ordinary video files.

Why are ads still appearing with Premium Lite?
Ads can still appear with Premium Lite because the membership does not cover every type of YouTube content or every surface. The documented exceptions include music content, Shorts, and advertisements shown while searching or browsing.
If ads appear during an apparently ordinary video, first check whether the content is music-related or includes material from a YouTube music partner. Also confirm that the account currently watching the video is the account with the active Premium Lite membership and that the plan is available in the account’s location. For plan-specific limitations, YouTube’s official Premium Lite feature documentation is more authoritative than third-party descriptions.

Does Premium Lite include YouTube Music?
No. YouTube Premium Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium. Music content may still show ads, and music videos and other music-partner content are excluded from Premium Lite background play and downloads.
Full YouTube Premium is the relevant option for someone who wants ad-free music and YouTube Music Premium alongside ad-free video. YouTube’s own guidance says: “If you want to watch all videos ad free, offline, and in the background — including music content and YouTube Music Premium — YouTube Premium is still the best option.”

Compared with full YouTube Premium, Premium Lite also omits features listed by YouTube such as Continue Watching, Jump ahead, queuing, and high-quality audio and video. The exact experience can vary by device, video, account, and location, so these omissions should be checked against the current membership comparison shown to the subscriber.
Is YouTube Premium Lite worth it after the price increase?
Premium Lite can be worthwhile for viewers who mostly watch eligible, non-music long-form videos and want fewer interruptions without paying for YouTube Music Premium. The plan is less compelling for viewers who primarily watch Shorts, listen to music, rely on search and browsing without ads, or need offline and background playback for all content.
Use this decision test:
| Choose Premium Lite if you mainly want… | Choose full YouTube Premium if you mainly want… |
|---|---|
| Fewer ads on eligible long-form videos | All-video ad removal, including music content |
| A lower-priced membership than the full plan | YouTube Music Premium included in the subscription |
| Downloads and background play for most eligible non-music videos | Downloads and background play that also cover music content |
| Occasional viewing of gaming, news, fashion, beauty, and similar mainstream categories | A consistently ad-free experience across video, music, Shorts, and browsing |
The price difference should be judged against actual viewing habits rather than the launch headline. Premium Lite launched at $7.99 per month, while later U.S. reporting placed it at $8.99 per month; check YouTube’s current offer before deciding whether the narrower benefits justify the price for your account.

Where is YouTube Premium Lite available?
YouTube Premium Lite is available only in supported locations, and YouTube says the list may expand. Availability and pricing are not necessarily identical across countries. Use YouTube’s supported-locations and Premium Lite membership information to check whether the plan is offered where you live and to see the applicable price.
YouTube announced the plan as part of the broader Premium service, which the company said had surpassed 125 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers globally, including trials, in 2025. That figure covers both YouTube Music and Premium and is not a Premium Lite subscriber count.
