YouTube announced a visual redesign for the YouTube Kids mobile app on December 10, 2024. The rollout was planned for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices over the following weeks; it was not announced as a change to the YouTube Kids website or TV experience. The old headline “will receive” is therefore out of date: the announcement is historical, and YouTube has not published a device-by-device tracker confirming which interface each family sees today.
What changed in the mobile app?
YouTube described the update as a visual refresh, not a complete rebuild. It introduced new colors and icons, a cleaner layout, and a refreshed viewing experience. The redesign also updated the presentation of category controls near the top of the home screen, with topics such as learning, gaming, and music intended to help users find content.
YouTube did not publish usability-study results or measurements showing that the new layout made browsing faster or easier. Those are potential benefits, not demonstrated outcomes. As with any redesign, familiar controls may take time to find, and a different balance of icons and text may work better for some children than others.
Which devices were included?
| YouTube Kids experience | Included in the announced redesign? |
|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad app | Yes; YouTube announced the mobile update for iOS. |
| Android phone and tablet app | Yes; YouTube announced the mobile update for Android. |
| Website in a browser | No; the announcement excluded the web experience. |
| TV experience | No; the announcement excluded the TV experience. |
These distinctions matter in a household using several screens. A phone or tablet may show a different layout from a browser, smart TV, or television-connected device. The December 2024 announcement does not establish that every mobile user worldwide has the same interface today.

What stayed the same—and what the redesign does not promise
YouTube said the redesign would retain YouTube Kids’ existing content, parental controls, and safety features. Its current YouTube Kids product page lists parent-approved content and collections, age-based content levels, a timer, and video blocking.
A new appearance is not a safety overhaul. YouTube says its service uses automated filters, human review, and parent feedback to help keep videos family-friendly, but no filtering system is perfect. A cleaner interface does not mean every video has been newly reviewed or that inappropriate material cannot appear. Parents can continue to use blocking and content settings, report concerns, and supervise viewing. YouTube made the same basic warning about imperfect filtering in its 2017 announcement about kid profiles and parental controls.
Why a family may see a different design
YouTube said the mobile update would roll out over the following weeks, rather than giving a universal date when every device would change. The announcement does not offer a current rollout checker. A family may also be comparing different products or configurations: the mobile app versus web or TV, different app versions, different regions, or different child profiles.

- Check the product: Make sure the child is using the YouTube Kids app, not the website, TV app, or supervised experience on the main YouTube platform.
- Update and reopen: Check the Apple App Store or Google Play for an available YouTube Kids update, then fully close and reopen the app.
- Restart if needed: If the app is updated but still looks unchanged, restart the phone or tablet. These basic steps cannot confirm whether an account-level or staged rollout is involved.
- Compare like with like: Check the same platform, app version, and child profile before concluding that two devices should look identical. Availability and features can vary by market.
If an updated mobile app still differs from screenshots or another household device, the official announcement does not establish that the device is broken; it simply does not document each user’s rollout status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat parents should review after an update
Because YouTube said the controls were retained, families do not need to treat the visual refresh as a new safety setup. It is still sensible to confirm that the settings match the child and device in use:
- Check the selected age-based content level or parent-approved collections.
- Review blocked videos and use blocking or reporting when appropriate.
- Confirm the timer is set as intended.
- Verify the child is using the intended profile, especially in a household with more than one child.
- Check the viewing setup on a shared TV separately; the mobile redesign did not apply to the TV experience in the announcement.
How this differs from YouTube Kids’ 2017 age-based design
The 2024 announcement should not be confused with YouTube’s November 2017 update. That earlier change introduced kid profiles and age-tailored interfaces: younger children saw less text, while older children could see more content on home screens. The 2024 announcement focused on a refreshed mobile appearance and category presentation. YouTube Kids remains a dedicated product; supervised experiences on the main YouTube platform are a separate option for older children and teenagers, as described in YouTube’s 2025 account of the service’s history.
