Spotify launched Audiobooks in Premium on October 14, 2024, in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The launch gave eligible Premium Individual subscribers and Premium Duo or Family plan managers 12 hours of audiobook listening per month, with access to a catalog Spotify described as containing more than 200,000 titles. It was never unlimited listening: after the allowance was used, the launch offer included a one-time 10-hour top-up for €9.99.
The product has since changed. In July 2025, Spotify introduced Audiobooks+, adding 15 hours per month for eligible subscribers and a separate option for additional Duo and Family members. The original 2024 announcement therefore describes the launch, not the entire audiobook service now offered in these markets.
What launched on October 14, 2024?
Spotify’s Audiobooks in Premium rollout covered four markets: France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Spotify said the launch catalog contained more than 200,000 audiobook titles, including approximately 15,000 French titles and 15,000 Dutch and Flemish titles. The announcement highlighted authors and works associated with Gaël Faye, Maylis de Kerangal, Joël Dicker, Suzanne Vermeer and Saskia Noort.
The offer was designed as a Premium benefit inside the existing Spotify app. Eligibility depended on the account’s market and plan, not simply on being physically present in one of the four countries. A Spotify account registered elsewhere may not qualify while travelling.

Which Premium users get the included hours?
| Account type | Launch allowance | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | 12 audiobook hours per month | The individual subscriber receives the allowance. |
| Premium Duo or Family plan manager | 12 audiobook hours per month | The manager receives the allowance described in the launch terms. |
| Other Duo or Family members | Not stated in the 2024 launch announcement | Do not assume every household member automatically received a separate base allowance. |
The hours apply to audiobook listening and are separate from music and podcast use. Spotify measures access in listening time, not in completed books: a short book may fit within the allowance while a long one may not.
Are Spotify audiobooks unlimited with Premium?
No. The launch benefit was a monthly time allowance. A listener who used all 12 hours had three practical choices:
- Wait for the account’s next monthly refresh. Spotify’s published material describes a monthly allowance but does not establish whether the reset follows the calendar month or the individual billing cycle, so check the reset date shown in the account.
- Buy the launch-announced one-time top-up of 10 additional hours for €9.99. That price was stated for the 2024 launch and should not be treated as a guaranteed current price in every market.
- Use Audiobooks+ where it is available.
There is no verified rollover rule in the supplied Spotify announcements. Do not assume unused hours carry forward.

What does “more than 200,000 titles” include?
The figure is Spotify’s launch-catalog claim, not a promise that 200,000-plus books were included in the Premium allowance. Spotify separated the catalog into different access types:
- Included in Premium: titles covered by the monthly listening allowance and marked with that label.
- À-la-carte titles: books outside the included selection that can be purchased separately, including by listeners without Premium.
- Unavailable titles: books not offered in a particular country because rights, language, publisher agreements or formats differ.
A book appearing in search therefore does not prove that it is included or available in every launch country. Spotify has not published a complete country-by-country parity list in the launch announcement.
Languages and local catalogs
The rollout emphasized local-language publishing. French titles are relevant to France and French-speaking audiences in Belgium and Luxembourg; Dutch and Flemish titles are particularly relevant to the Netherlands and Belgium. Luxembourg is multilingual, so its catalog should not be treated as a single-language shelf. International-language books may also appear, subject to territorial rights.
Spotify’s approximate launch figures—15,000 French titles and 15,000 Dutch and Flemish titles—describe additions cited in its October 2024 announcement, not a guarantee that every title is present in all four countries.

How to find audiobooks in Spotify
Spotify described several discovery routes:
- Recommendations in the Home feed.
- A dedicated Audiobooks hub.
- Editorial selections, genre shelves and playlists.
- Search for an author or title in the app.
- The Included in Premium label, which identifies books covered by the allowance.
Menu placement and wording can vary by device, app release, account type and interface language. If a title is searchable but lacks the included label, check whether Spotify offers it for separate purchase instead.
What changed with Audiobooks+?
On July 16, 2025, Spotify expanded the service in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg with Audiobooks+. Eligible Premium Individual subscribers and Duo or Family plan managers can add 15 audiobook hours per month. Spotify also introduced Audiobooks+ for Plan Members, allowing additional members of Duo and Family plans to obtain their own 15-hour monthly access through a recurring add-on purchased by the plan manager.
Spotify says Audiobooks+ pricing varies by market. Check the price displayed in the relevant account before subscribing; do not reuse a price from another country. Details are in Spotify’s Audiobooks+ announcement.
Is Spotify a good fit for audiobook listeners?
Best for occasional listening
Spotify is convenient for existing Premium subscribers who sample books, finish one or two shorter titles, or want music, podcasts and audiobooks in one app. The included allowance lowers the cost of trying the format, while the French, Dutch and Flemish emphasis may suit listeners in these markets.

Less suitable for heavy listening
Listeners who regularly exceed 12 hours—or 27 hours when using the base allowance plus Audiobooks+—may find a time-metered benefit restrictive. Spotify does not provide unlimited listening through this launch offer, and a Premium-included title is a subscription benefit rather than automatically a permanently owned copy.
When a specific book matters
For one particular title, compare the “Included in Premium” status, Spotify’s à-la-carte option and dedicated audiobook retailers. Services such as Audible may be more appropriate for readers who want a specialist audiobook ecosystem or routinely consume long books. Regional Audible sites include France, Belgium and the Netherlands; current prices and terms vary and should be checked directly.
What happened after the launch?
Spotify’s later announcements show an effort to expand both supply and paid access:
- In April 2025, Spotify announced a €1 million investment in audiobook production in non-English languages, beginning with French and Dutch. Spotify said fewer than 3% of French-language books were available in audio; that figure is Spotify’s framing, not an independently audited market statistic. See the investment announcement.
- In June 2025, Spotify said audiobook listeners in the four launch markets had grown by an average 12% month over month since launch. This is a company-reported metric. See Spotify’s publishing update.
- In July 2025, Audiobooks+ and Audiobooks+ for Plan Members added recurring extra-hour options.
Practical checks before you subscribe or buy
- Confirm that your Spotify account country is France, Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg.
- Check whether your exact plan is Individual, Duo or Family, and whether you are the plan manager.
- Look for the Included in Premium label rather than relying on the headline catalog count.
- Verify the book’s availability in your country and preferred language.
- Check the displayed allowance, reset date, top-up terms and Audiobooks+ price in your account.
- Decide whether subscription access is sufficient or whether you need an à-la-carte purchase or a dedicated audiobook service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Spotify audiobooks free with Premium in these countries?
Eligible Premium users receive a monthly audiobook allowance for titles marked “Included in Premium.” It is a subscription benefit with a time limit, not unlimited access to every audiobook.
Best Value
Does Premium Family give every member 12 audiobook hours?
The October 2024 launch announcement specified 12 hours for the Family or Duo plan manager. It did not say that every other member automatically received a separate base allowance. Audiobooks+ for Plan Members was later introduced as a separate add-on option.
Can non-Premium listeners buy Spotify audiobooks?
Spotify said titles outside the Premium-included selection could be purchased à la carte, including by listeners without Premium, where offered in that market.
Are French, Dutch and Flemish audiobooks included?
Spotify added approximately 15,000 French titles and 15,000 Dutch and Flemish titles at launch, but inclusion and availability depend on country rights and the individual title.
What happens when the monthly hours run out?
You can wait for the next monthly refresh, use a one-time top-up where the applicable terms offer it, or consider Audiobooks+ if it is available for your plan and market.
Recommended Free Tools
Do unused audiobook hours roll over?
Spotify’s cited announcements do not establish a rollover policy. Check the allowance information in your account rather than assuming unused time carries forward.
The Bottom Line
Spotify’s 2024 rollout made audiobooks a useful Premium extra for casual and local-language listeners in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, but the core benefit is time-limited. Treat the 200,000-plus figure as a catalog headline, verify the “Included in Premium” label for each book, and consider Audiobooks+ or a dedicated service if you regularly listen beyond the monthly allowance.
