If a YouTube gaming stream ends or freezes after running for hours on a Linux VPS, the duration alone does not reveal the cause. First establish whether the encoder exited, stayed alive but stopped advancing, or kept producing locally while delivery to YouTube failed. Then compare encoder logs, local output, VPS resources and outbound connectivity with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. A restart policy can recover an exited process; a stalled process needs progress monitoring, and neither measure proves or fixes the underlying fault.
Identify what actually stopped
“VOD” can mean prerecorded gameplay being sent as a live stream, but the same checks apply to a live gameplay session. The specific encoder, its version and configuration, VPS provider, and failure logs are unknown here, so there is no evidence-based single command or root-cause fix. Capture the failure signature before changing settings or replacing equipment.

Collect evidence in a useful order
- Save the failure timeline. Keep encoder logs with timestamps, process or service exit status, restart history, and YouTube stream-health messages from before and after the event. Redact stream keys and other credentials before sharing logs.
- Check process state and media progress. Determine whether the encoder is running and whether its frame or progress count advances. Inspect the last output for clues such as a broken pipe, connection reset, input EOF, or encoder error. These messages narrow the investigation but do not, on their own, prove a cause.
- Compare the local recording or archive. If one exists, inspect the same time range as the YouTube interruption. A healthy local file alongside a failed stream points the investigation toward delivery or ingest; a missing or damaged local segment calls for checking the input, encoder, and host as well. YouTube recommends checking a local archive when troubleshooting stream quality (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- Review host resources and outbound connectivity. Check CPU and memory pressure, disk space if recording, and the VPS provider’s network metrics around the failure. Assess sustained outbound performance rather than relying on a short speed test. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing a quality level the connection can sustain (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Match the timestamps with YouTube. Check Live Control Room’s incoming status and stream-health messages against the VPS logs. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder version and errors, quality, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection strength. It states: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” If its connection test shows a problem, YouTube advises contacting the Internet provider.
Verify encoder settings without assuming they caused the delayed failure
Settings that are marginal for the available connection can contribute to stream trouble, but a failure only after several hours does not by itself show that a bitrate or keyframe interval is responsible. Compare the configuration with YouTube’s published guidance and the VPS’s sustained capability. YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR), lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video plus AAC or MP3 audio, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health and messages.

Choose recovery based on the failure mode
If the encoder exits unexpectedly
Use a process supervisor or service manager to restart it after an unexpected exit, and preserve exit status and logs so a restart does not hide a recurring error. A restart policy restores a process; it does not identify why the process ended.
If the process stays alive but stops making progress
A basic restart policy may do nothing because the process has not exited. Consider a separate watchdog that checks an observable progress signal, such as advancing frame or media counters, and logs each intervention. Choose thresholds from the behavior you observe rather than copying an arbitrary interval.

If local output is healthy but delivery fails
Focus on the outbound connection, the encoder’s connection to YouTube ingest, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the VPS provider’s metrics show an interruption or sustained capacity problem, raise that evidence with the provider; consider moving providers only when provider-side performance or service evidence supports the change.
A public Ubuntu/FFmpeg project documents a layered approach using a process restart policy, progress watchdog, and periodic restart. That is one operator’s setup, not an official YouTube fix or proof that periodic restarts are appropriate for every stream. A periodic restart may interrupt a healthy stream and should not replace diagnosis.

Rules and content checks for prerecorded gameplay
If “VOD” means prerecorded gameplay sent as a live broadcast, confirm that you have the rights needed for the game footage, music, overlays, and other included material. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream requirements before broadcasting. A successful connection or encoder configuration does not establish that the content is permitted. For gaming highlights or compilations, also consider whether the finished channel offers enough original value; technical continuity does not guarantee monetization eligibility or prevent a policy review.
