First find where the choppiness starts: compare the replay file or local recording, FFmpeg’s output, YouTube’s live preview, and playback on another connection. If the local output is already choppy, focus on the source, timing, or encoder; if it is smooth locally but not on YouTube, check YouTube’s stream-health messages and your outbound connection. One setting matters especially when you are streaming a replay file: pace it in real time with FFmpeg’s -re option. Do not add that option automatically to a live capture input.
Locate the first point where the video becomes choppy
Use the same section of gameplay for each comparison. YouTube advises checking the encoder preview, encoder errors and CPU load, and the local archive before deciding that a network problem is to blame. A clean local recording does not prove the upload path is healthy, but a choppy local recording points upstream of YouTube.
- Inspect the source. Play the replay file locally, or inspect the original capture. Note whether the same stutters appear at the same moments.
- Check FFmpeg while the problem occurs. Look for errors and whether processing speed falls behind real time. Watch CPU load during the choppy section; there is no single CPU percentage that establishes a problem for every system and encoder.
- Compare the local output or archive with YouTube’s preview. If both are choppy, investigate input timing, frame-rate handling, or encoding. If the local output is smooth but the YouTube preview is not, inspect stream health and the outbound connection.
- Check viewer playback separately. Try the stream on another connection and at another playback quality. If the preview is smooth but one viewer’s playback is not, the issue may be specific to that viewer’s connection or playback conditions.
Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance alongside this comparison. A symptom that appears only after upload calls for a different investigation from a stutter already present in the local output.
If the input is a replay file, pace it in real time
A file can be processed faster than its intended playback rate unless you tell FFmpeg to read it at a real-time pace. For a media file being played out as a live stream, FFmpeg documents -re as an alias for -readrate 1: it reads the input at its native frame rate.

ffmpeg -re -i replay.mp4 [your existing encoding and output options]
Put -re before the -i for the file it governs. Keep your existing encoder and YouTube output settings in place while testing this timing change, so you can tell whether it affects the symptom. The bracketed text is explanatory, not a literal FFmpeg option; supply the output options appropriate to your setup.
Do not apply -re by rote to an actual live or capture-device input. FFmpeg cautions that real-time pacing on live inputs may cause packet loss. Check the documentation for your installed build and confirm its version with ffmpeg -version. See the FFmpeg documentation for input pacing options.

Check encoder throughput and YouTube’s ingest settings
When the file and local output are choppy, or FFmpeg falls behind while encoding, check the workload and the settings together. Change one variable at a time; lowering resolution or frame rate may help a constrained setup, but first confirm what the stream actually uses and what YouTube reports.
Read the FFmpeg output and monitor CPU load
Watch FFmpeg’s console during the affected segment for errors and processing speed. If it cannot keep up with the intended output rate, investigate encoder load, competing work, or an input that is being handled at the wrong pace. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load; its guidance does not set a universal CPU threshold that applies to every machine.

Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s published live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Match bitrate to the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; a number that fits one combination is not a general target for another. YouTube’s published H.264 figures include these examples:
| H.264 video format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, checked in 2026, for the listed H.264 formats—not independent test results or universal rates. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the format you are actually sending. If you see an error, read its exact wording: YouTube’s live-stream error guidance flags incorrect video settings and keyframe frequency. Frame rate and keyframe interval are related, so use the reported error to guide the check rather than guessing.

If the local output is smooth, investigate upload and playback
For a clean local output and a choppy YouTube preview, check the stream-health messages and the connection carrying the outgoing stream. Test upload capacity and the outbound path under conditions similar to the broadcast. If the encoder settings match YouTube’s guidance but the preview still degrades, avoid assuming that an encoder change will fix a connection problem.
YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and monitoring stream health. A gaming replay should include the motion and audio you expect to broadcast: a static test image may not reveal problems that appear during fast gameplay. Review YouTube’s guidance on testing a live stream and monitoring stream health. For a viewer-side symptom, compare playback on another connection and quality using YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.

Run a controlled test before broadcasting
- Choose a replay segment with motion and audio representative of the real stream.
- Test privately or unlisted, and compare the source, local output or archive, and YouTube preview.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output, CPU load, and YouTube’s stream-health messages through the problem segment.
- Change one setting or connection condition at a time, then repeat the same test segment.
This isolates whether the change helped without conflating pacing, encoding, ingest configuration, and network conditions. Do not treat a single short test as proof that every longer broadcast will behave identically.
Common symptoms and what to check next
- The replay itself stutters: check the source file and its timing before changing YouTube settings.
- The file looks fine, but the local FFmpeg output stutters: confirm file pacing with
-reor-readrate 1, then inspect errors, speed, and CPU load. Do not use file pacing on a live capture input without checking FFmpeg’s warning. - The local output is smooth, but YouTube’s preview is choppy: review YouTube stream-health warnings, actual ingest settings, and the outbound connection.
- YouTube reports a keyframe or video-settings error: compare the reported error with the stream’s real codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval; do not infer the wrong setting from choppiness alone.
- The preview is smooth, but a viewer sees stutters: compare playback on another connection and at another quality before changing the encoder.
