To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a YouTube channel, record a video with equipment you already have, then upload it through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. A phone is enough for many first videos. Choose extra gear only when it solves a real problem, such as shaky framing, unclear speech, or poor lighting.
1. Create the right kind of channel
A Google Account lets you watch videos and subscribe, but you need a YouTube channel to upload. YouTube offers a personal channel and a business or other-name channel associated with a Brand Account. A Brand Account can support multiple owners or managers, which can be useful when a small team shares responsibility.
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account you want associated with the channel.
- Open YouTube Settings and the channel-management option, then choose to create a channel. The exact interface wording can change.
- Choose a profile picture, channel name and handle, then confirm the channel.
- If the channel represents a business, project or shared identity, follow YouTube’s business/other-name or Brand Account route and assign access deliberately.

2. Decide what your first video needs
Choose a format before buying anything: a desk-based talk, a demonstration, a moving vlog, a screen tutorial or a live stream each places different demands on framing, sound, light and recording. This is a practical planning step, not a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s equipment guidance puts the emphasis on your creative goals and says there is no universal camera choice.

What type of camera will I use?
Start with a phone if it can capture the video you need. It is portable and can also upload through the YouTube app. A point-and-shoot may suit frequent vlogging and can offer a reversible screen. A DSLR can offer more control and a cinematic look, but may cost more, weigh more and take longer to learn. Before upgrading, consider the shooting style, portability, focusing needs, cost and whether the device accepts the microphone you plan to use.
For a stable phone shot, a phone stand or tripod is an optional, task-focused purchase—not a prerequisite. YouTube’s advice is: “Often, the best equipment is the one you have at hand.” Read YouTube’s video equipment tips before deciding whether an upgrade addresses a genuine limitation.
How will I handle sound?
Clear speech matters more than owning a particular microphone. An onboard mic may work when you are close to the camera; YouTube suggests being about three to four feet away for best onboard-mic audio, but that is general advice rather than a universal acoustic rule. Listen to a short test recording in the place where you will film.

- Close to the camera: Try the built-in microphone first and reduce competing noise.
- Natural sound from farther away: A directional shotgun microphone can suit a subject or scene at a distance.
- A speaker moving or positioned away from camera: A wireless lavalier can keep the mic attached to the speaker.
Check that your phone or camera has a compatible external-microphone input before buying a mic; the connector or adapter requirement varies by device. A wireless lavalier is an optional way to address distance, not a guaranteed improvement for every setup.
How will I handle lighting?
First try daylight from a window or an outdoor location. If you record indoors, a two-point setup uses a key light on the subject and a fill light to soften shadows. A soft light can suit close-ups, while a camera-mounted light can be practical for mobile shooting. Choose based on the location, available space, portability and look you want; a studio kit is not a starting requirement.
3. Record and save a video
On a phone, record the clip with the camera app, review it, then use the YouTube app to upload. On a computer, record with software that creates a video file and save that file where you can find it. YouTube does not provide a built-in computer-webcam recording feature, so use recording software for that workflow.

- Frame the subject steadily and check that the intended shot is in focus.
- Record a short sound check; listen for intelligible speech and distracting room noise.
- Check the light on the subject, not just the brightness of the background.
- Record the full video, then review enough to catch missing sections, unusable audio or an accidental camera movement.

4. Upload, complete details and choose visibility
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and choose Create, then Upload videos.
- Select the saved video file and enter the requested video details.
- Review the details and select the visibility setting deliberately before publishing.
- If you are not ready to publish, save the upload as private and return to it later.

Before publishing, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the video’s footage, music and other material. Monetization has additional channel policies, and eligibility does not guarantee approval. If earning from videos is a future goal, build original work and check YouTube’s current monetization policies and the Earn area in Studio rather than assuming that simply uploading or reaching a threshold is enough.

6. Understand the route to monetization
YouTube Partner Program (YPP) acceptance involves more than a subscriber or view threshold. YouTube’s overview lists baseline requirements: comply with monetization policies, live in a region where YPP is available, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, enable 2-Step Verification, have access to advanced features, and link or set up one active AdSense for YouTube account in Studio. YouTube reviews the whole channel after an application; meeting a threshold does not mean acceptance.
Standard ad-revenue eligibility
YouTube’s eligibility page, accessed in 2026, lists either of these routes: 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Shorts-feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour route. These are eligibility thresholds, not earnings estimates or a promise of approval.
Earlier access to some features
In eligible regions, YouTube describes an earlier-access route for certain features at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. This is not equivalent to standard ad-revenue eligibility: individual features have their own requirements, and availability depends on region. Check the Earn area for the rules that apply to your channel.

A first-upload workflow is different from keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock.
