A headless Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Lite is a sensible lightweight starting point for a YouTube nursery rhyme stream: it avoids the desktop environment, can be managed remotely, and uses modest hardware. It is not a proven 24/7 encoder for every video, resolution, frame rate, or codec. Test your exact playback and streaming workload before relying on it. Recommended lightweight setup
Use a Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS Lite, reliable network access, boot media, and the power supply recommended for that exact board. Set up networking and remote access when you image the OS so the device can run without a monitor, keyboard, or graphical desktop.
- Operating system: Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Raspberry Pi recommends Lite for headless use when a desktop environment is not needed. Its setup guide describes configuring network access and SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect during imaging; VNC is incompatible with Lite. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide.
- Boot media: Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. That is an OS installation recommendation, not enough information to size storage for a video library. Calculate separate media storage from the actual file sizes.
- Power supply: match the official recommendation for your board: Pi 5, 5 V / 5 A with a 27 W USB-C supply; Pi 4, 5 V / 3 A with a 15 W supply; Pi 3, 5 V / 2.5 A with a 12.5 W supply. Confirm the recommendation for your specific model before buying.
- Network: Ethernet is a reasonable choice when a cable is available and network consistency matters. Wi-Fi may suit your location, but neither connection guarantees uninterrupted service.
- Optional backup power: a UPS can reduce interruptions from short power cuts. Size it for the actual equipment load and the runtime you need; there is no universal sizing figure for this setup.
A Raspberry Pi is a compact, low-complexity host, not a performance guarantee. Raspberry Pi’s documentation identifies board and power specifications, but does not establish that a particular model can continuously encode your specific nursery rhyme videos. If testing reveals unstable playback or encoding, choose a more capable Linux host rather than assuming a software setting will fix a hardware limit.
Check the video workload before committing
The main decision is whether the machine must encode video in real time. A stream that decodes, scales, and re-encodes a video can demand considerably more from a small host than sending compatible, already-encoded media through a suitable pipeline. Do not assume a Pi can transcode arbitrary files continuously, and do not assume that source files are compatible just because they play on another device.

- Gather representative files from the actual loop, including the largest or most demanding examples.
- Identify their video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Choose the intended playback or streaming pipeline and verify whether it can send those files without re-encoding while still meeting YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- Run the exact intended workload on the intended host for a meaningful test period. Watch for dropped frames, playback interruptions, overheating or other instability, and check YouTube’s stream health.
- If the workload requires encoding and the board cannot sustain it stably, use a more capable host or a cloud service rather than launching a 24/7 channel on an untested setup.
OBS is one possible Linux streaming application, but its Linux requirements do not prove that a Raspberry Pi can handle a particular stream. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix, and cautions that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee streaming at a desired resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is headless; if your chosen software needs a graphical session, verify compatibility and resource use before choosing it.
Set YouTube’s ingest format and stream key
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use the current values in YouTube’s live encoder settings for your chosen output.

For one concrete reference point, YouTube’s table gives H.264 at 720p30 a 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended bitrate. That is YouTube ingest guidance, not evidence that any particular Raspberry Pi can encode this output. Other resolutions and frame rates have their own settings in YouTube’s table.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key from its streaming settings.
- Configure your encoder to send to YouTube using the stream URL and key, RTMPS where supported, and an output format that matches YouTube’s current guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs.
- Before announcing the stream, test with representative video and audio. Confirm that YouTube receives it, the picture and sound are correct, and stream health is acceptable.
- Monitor stream health during operation and check the host, network, and playback process when the feed degrades or stops.
The exact FFmpeg command, loop supervisor, and restart configuration depend on the files, FFmpeg build, and pipeline. The available official guidance does not validate a single command or a tested Pi-plus-FFmpeg combination, so do not treat a generic command copied from another setup as proof of reliable operation.

Plan for stream boundaries and archives
A nursery rhyme loop may be intended to run continuously, but YouTube stream sessions still have boundaries. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped. Decide how you will handle session endings, restarts, and resulting archives before calling the channel always-on. A restart can create a new session rather than an uninterrupted broadcast; test the workflow and account for what viewers will see. See YouTube’s live streaming workflow guidance.
Clear the rights to the actual nursery rhyme material
Before streaming, clear the specific recordings, arrangements, performances, and visuals for public live use and any intended monetization. A familiar or traditional rhyme does not automatically make a particular recording, arrangement, performance, or illustration free to use. YouTube provides live-content rights-management settings, but those settings do not establish that you hold the necessary rights. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and verify permissions for the actual material and intended use.
