Selecting the video usually returns playback near where the viewer stopped on TV, computer, or mobile, but paused or cleared watch history, delayed updates, and nearly finished videos can prevent normal resume behavior.
The most important distinction is between ordinary progress-bar resume and YouTube Premium’s explicitly documented cross-device Continue watching benefit. The troubleshooting steps below preserve your viewing record while separating account, history, interface, and Autoplay problems.
Key takeaways
- YouTube’s progress bar usually lets a signed-in viewer resume an unfinished video on a TV, computer, or YouTube mobile app.
- YouTube watch history must remain active if you want YouTube to retain the viewing record used by related features.
- Refreshing the browser or feed is safer than clearing history because YouTube says clearing watch history also clears all progress bars.
- YouTube Premium documentation explicitly describes saving a viewing position for resuming across multiple devices; do not treat that wording as proof that every free account has the same cross-device guarantee.
- A video that is almost finished may not restart from its previous position, and the progress bar may take time to update.
How does YouTube.com ‘Continue watching’ resume unfinished videos?
YouTube records viewing progress against the viewer’s signed-in account and can show a progress bar beneath an unfinished video’s thumbnail. Selecting that video will usually restart playback near the point where the viewer stopped. YouTube documents this behavior for signed-in viewers using TV, computers, and YouTube mobile apps.
The progress bar is the clearest sign that YouTube has saved a position. It is not necessarily a separate “Continue watching” playlist: in ordinary YouTube playback, the viewer generally finds the unfinished video again through the feed, search results, recommendations, or history and uses the bar to identify where playback stopped. YouTube’s official video-progress documentation also warns that the bar may not update immediately.

What happens when you stop watching a YouTube video?
When a viewer leaves a video before finishing it, YouTube can retain the viewing position and display a partial progress line under the thumbnail. Reopening the video from the same signed-in account will usually resume playback close to that position, although the behavior is not absolute.
Near-complete videos are a documented exception. YouTube says a partially watched video may not restart from the old position when it is mostly complete. That can make a successfully finished or nearly finished documentary appear to have lost its resume point even though the account and history settings are correct.
What does YouTube Premium add for Continue watching across devices?
YouTube Premium is the clearest documented option for readers who specifically want to resume videos across a phone, computer, and TV. YouTube’s Premium help page says: “If you stop watching a video, we’ll save your spot so that you can resume watching videos across multiple devices.” — YouTube Help, “Use your YouTube Premium benefits,” official product documentation, accessed August 13, 2026. YouTube’s Premium benefits documentation describes this as a Premium benefit.
That distinction matters. The regular progress-bar documentation supports account-linked resume behavior on signed-in TV, computer, and mobile environments, while the Premium documentation makes the cross-device promise explicit. YouTube’s documentation should not be stretched into a claim that Premium is required for every ordinary progress bar or that every free account receives an identical cross-device experience.

| Situation | What YouTube’s documentation supports | Best interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Signed-in YouTube on a TV, computer, or mobile app | A progress bar can show where a viewer left off, and selecting the video will usually resume it. | Standard account-linked playback continuity. |
| YouTube Premium | YouTube describes saving a spot and resuming videos across multiple devices. | The clearest documented choice for cross-device continuation. |
| Watch history paused | Videos watched while history is turned off do not appear in history. | Check history settings before assuming YouTube lost the position. |
| Watch history cleared | Clearing history also clears progress bars. | Do not delete history as a first troubleshooting step. |
| Temporary queue | A queue does not survive closing the browser. | Use Watch Later when the goal is to find a video again. |
| YouTube TV | YouTube TV has separate search and watch-history controls. | Do not assume every YouTube TV privacy control works exactly like main YouTube. |
Why did YouTube not save where I left off?
YouTube may not show a resume point because the viewer was signed out, used a different account, paused watch history, cleared history, encountered a delayed progress display, or stopped near the end of the video.
1. You are signed out or using the wrong account
YouTube documents the progress bar for viewers signed in to a Google Account. Check the profile shown on the device where you stopped watching and compare it with the account on the device where you are trying to resume. A phone, browser, TV, or family member’s profile may be using a different account.
2. Watch history is paused
YouTube says videos watched while watch history is turned off will not appear in history. Because history is part of the viewing record used by YouTube’s recommendations and related features, a paused-history setting can interfere with finding or retaining unfinished viewing. Check the account’s watch-history control before deleting anything. YouTube’s watch-history documentation explains the effect of pausing history.
3. Watch history was cleared
Clearing watch history is destructive for this purpose: YouTube says that clearing watch history also clears all progress bars. If the bar disappeared after history was deleted, restoring the old resume markers may not be possible through the normal YouTube controls. Check the account and history state first, and avoid clearing history merely to try to repair playback.

4. The progress bar is delayed
A delayed bar does not necessarily mean that YouTube failed to record the viewing position. YouTube recommends refreshing the browser or feed when the progress bar has not updated immediately. Refreshing is a reversible first step; history deletion is not an equivalent troubleshooting action.
5. The video is nearly complete
YouTube documents cases in which a mostly completed video will not restart from the earlier position. Treat that result as a product exception rather than immediate evidence that your account is broken.
How do you continue watching a YouTube video?
- Open YouTube on the device where you want to resume the video.
- Verify that the active profile is the same Google or YouTube account used when you watched the video.
- Find the video in the feed, search results, recommendations, or watch history and look for a partial progress bar beneath its thumbnail.
- Select the video and check whether playback starts near the saved position.
- If the bar looks stale or missing, refresh the browser or YouTube feed.
- Check whether watch history is paused if the video cannot be found or no progress is retained.
- Do not clear watch history as a repair attempt unless you understand that YouTube says clearing it removes all progress bars.
- If the video was almost finished, manually move the playhead near the expected ending because YouTube may not restore the old position.
Why does YouTube say “Video paused. Continue watching?”
“Video paused. Continue watching?” is a different feature from resuming an unfinished video. YouTube displays the prompt when Autoplay is enabled and YouTube believes playback has continued without active viewing. The stated purpose is to protect watch history and avoid using internet data when nobody is actually watching. YouTube’s explanation of the “Continue watching?” prompt covers this inactivity safeguard.
The two features are easy to confuse because both use the words “Continue watching.” A progress bar under a thumbnail means YouTube has a possible saved position for an unfinished video. The on-screen “Video paused. Continue watching?” message asks whether playback should continue after inactivity.

| Feature | Where you see it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Resume an unfinished video | A partial progress bar under a video thumbnail | Usually starts the selected video near the point where you stopped. |
| “Video paused. Continue watching?” | A prompt during ongoing Autoplay playback | Checks whether a viewer is still present before playback continues. |
Should you use Watch Later instead of a temporary queue?
Use Watch Later when your main goal is to locate a documentary again, and use the progress bar when your goal is to resume a video already in progress. YouTube’s queue is temporary and does not survive closing the browser, while the official queue documentation recommends Watch Later for keeping videos available beyond the current session. YouTube’s queue documentation distinguishes the temporary queue from saved videos.
Watch Later solves discoverability, not necessarily playback-position retention. Saving a documentary there makes it easier to find later, but the resume position still depends on the account and viewing-history behavior described above.
Does YouTube TV continue watching work the same way?
YouTube TV has separate search and watch-history controls, so its privacy and history behavior should not automatically be assumed to match the main YouTube website or mobile apps. Readers troubleshooting a program or video in YouTube TV should check YouTube TV’s own account controls and documentation. YouTube TV’s search and watch-history help page documents those controls separately.
What is the safest fix when the YouTube progress bar disappeared?
Start with the account, history, and refresh checks—not history deletion. Confirm the same signed-in account, confirm that watch history is active, reopen the video, refresh the feed, and consider whether the video is almost complete. These steps preserve the remaining viewing record while testing the most likely explanations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I continue watching a YouTube video?
YouTube usually resumes an unfinished video when the viewer is signed in, the same account is being used, and watch history is active. Find the video with its partial progress bar and select it; near-complete videos and delayed progress updates are documented exceptions.
Why did YouTube start my video from the beginning?
Check that the device uses the same Google or YouTube account, confirm that watch history is not paused, and refresh the browser or feed. Do not clear watch history as a first fix because YouTube says clearing history also clears all progress bars.
Does YouTube Continue watching work across devices?
YouTube Premium is the service whose official documentation explicitly says that saved viewing spots can be resumed across multiple devices. Ordinary signed-in YouTube also documents progress-bar resume behavior, but the Premium documentation provides the clearest cross-device statement.

No. A partial progress bar identifies an unfinished video that can usually resume near the saved position. The “Video paused. Continue watching?” prompt is an Autoplay inactivity safeguard that asks whether playback should continue.
The Bottom Line
YouTube.com “Continue watching” usually resumes unfinished videos through an account-linked progress bar, provided the viewer is signed in and watch history is active. Refresh a stale feed, verify the account, and avoid clearing history because YouTube says that removes progress bars. For an explicitly documented cross-device resume benefit, YouTube Premium is the relevant option.
