Yes: Google confirmed on February 3, 2026, that it was closing the mobile-browser loophole many free users used to keep YouTube audio playing after minimizing a browser or locking a phone. That does not mean all free picture-in-picture (PiP) stopped working. Eligible non-music videos can still play in a floating window; dependable screen-off playback is a separate feature and generally requires a paid YouTube membership.
What YouTube changed
The old workaround used a mobile browser instead of the YouTube app: open a video, start playback, then switch apps or lock the phone. Some browsers—including Edge, Brave, and Samsung Internet—could keep the audio going because of how they handed media playback to the operating system. It was not an official free YouTube feature.
On February 3, 2026, Google confirmed it was closing that loophole. Reports described playback stopping when users minimized the browser or locked the screen, sometimes with lock-screen controls disappearing. This was a broad product-policy enforcement change, not proof that every browser independently broke at once. Rollout and symptoms could vary by account, device, browser, or region. YouTube’s help pages list background playback in the mobile apps and mobile browsers as a Premium benefit: Premium benefits and background playback in mobile browsers. The likely commercial rationale is that closing a free route to a paid feature preserves the distinction between tiers; YouTube’s published benefit list supports that interpretation, but it is an inference rather than a separately confirmed explanation of Google’s motive.

Background playback is not picture-in-picture
- Background playback means audio continues when you leave the app or browser, including with the screen locked.
- Picture-in-picture keeps a small floating video visible over other apps. It is useful for multitasking, but it does not provide screen-off listening.
YouTube’s current help pages document free PiP for eligible non-music content on Android and iOS/iPadOS. Music videos and other music content are restricted; the documented exclusions include Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated music covers. How to try free PiP
Android
- In Android Settings, open Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-picture and turn on Allow picture-in-picture.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback and enable Picture-in-picture.
- Play an eligible non-music video, then leave YouTube. A floating video window should remain visible.
iPhone or iPad
- Use iOS or iPadOS 15.0 or later.
- Open Settings → General → Picture in Picture and enable Start PiP Automatically.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback and enable Picture-in-picture.
- Play eligible content and leave YouTube; the video should move into a floating window.
If PiP does not appear, confirm both system and YouTube settings, try a clearly non-music long-form video, update YouTube, and restart the app and device. A PiP failure alone does not prove a Premium restriction: reported bugs have affected free and paid users. TechRadar reported PiP problems on Android and iOS.

Why browser tests can be confusing
If a browser still plays audio after the screen is locked, that does not establish that the workaround remains reliably available. Server-side enforcement can roll out unevenly; browsers and operating systems handle media differently; and account or regional eligibility can differ. A trial or another entitlement can also be mistaken for free access. Conversely, reopening a browser and resuming a stopped video is not background playback.
Coverage also reported an experimental background-video option in Edge Canary for Android. Treat it as a browser-specific, potentially temporary experiment—not a YouTube-supported entitlement or a dependable replacement. For music videos, free PiP is a weak substitute because YouTube treats music content separately. Premium Lite’s “most videos” language also makes it a poor assumption for music-first users or anyone who needs every video covered. Verify the actual features and price shown for your account before subscribing.

What to avoid
- Unofficial modified apps and APKs: downloads from untrusted sources can be tampered with or expose account credentials; they can also stop working after YouTube changes and may violate YouTube or app-store terms. They have no reliable support path.
- Claims of a permanent browser fix: a browser feature or flag can be experimental, temporary, or unsupported. Do not treat an intermittent success as proof of a durable free entitlement.
- Old instructions presented as current: guides that rely on the browser staying alive after a screen lock describe the workaround Google said it was closing.
