In most cases, creators do not switch these public tabs on manually. YouTube makes them available according to the channel’s published content and the interface being used. Creators control the channel’s Home tab, playlists, featured content, and cross-promotion instead.
What the three public tabs mean
YouTube’s channel-page navigation may include these content-type views. The tabs vary by channel, so a channel will not necessarily display all three: YouTube Help explains that channel tabs depend on the channel and its content.

YouTube announced this separation on October 27, 2022, saying Shorts and livestreams would no longer be shown in the regular Videos tab as part of the intended channel browsing experience. The current interface can change, and a replay or highlight may still appear elsewhere on a channel. The announcement is documented in YouTube’s rollout discussion.
Public channel tabs are not YouTube Studio tabs

- Channel-page tabs: public browsing views that visitors use to find Videos, Shorts, or Live content.
- Home tab: the public landing page whose shelves and order a creator can customize.
- Studio Content and Analytics views: private management and reporting screens. Studio Analytics can sort performance into All, Videos, Shorts, Live, Posts, Playlists, and Podcasts, but that does not create public channel tabs. See YouTube’s Analytics Content report.
Do creators have to enable the tabs?
Usually, no. YouTube does not document a normal creator switch for manually creating a public Videos, Shorts, or Live tab. Publishing publicly available content in the relevant format generally gives YouTube a basis to show the corresponding view, although the exact navigation can vary by channel, device, account, and interface.
That is different from the Home tab. Home-tab shelves are creator-controlled; the content-type navigation is not presented as a manually added section.
How viewers find the tabs
Desktop
- Open the creator’s YouTube channel page.
- Look below the channel header for the navigation row.
- Select Videos, Shorts, or Live when that tab is present.
Mobile app
- Open the creator’s channel in the YouTube app.
- Look across the channel navigation area below the header.
- Choose the available content type.
Labels, order, and placement can differ on desktop, mobile, TV apps, and embedded experiences. If a tab is absent, that alone does not prove the channel is broken.

What creators can organize on the Home tab
The Home tab is where creators can build a curated front page. On desktop, use this path:

- Select Customization in the left menu.
- Open the Home tab.
- Under Layout, select Add section.
- Choose a shelf such as videos or a playlist, arrange the sections, then select Publish.
YouTube’s current help page says creators can use up to 12 custom Home-tab sections, including options for videos, playlists, memberships, channels, posts, and effects: Home tab layout instructions.
A Home section named “Videos” is a curated shelf. It is not the automatic public Videos tab, and adding a shelf cannot manufacture a Shorts or Live tab.

Why a Shorts, Videos, or Live tab may be missing
- The channel has not published content of that type publicly.
- A stream was never created, scheduled, or archived publicly.
- The relevant upload is private, unlisted, deleted, restricted, or otherwise unavailable to visitors.
- The upload was classified differently from what the creator expected.
- The viewer is on another channel, account, device, app version, or an alternate channel-page layout.
- The viewer is looking at Studio’s Content or Analytics screen rather than the public channel page.
- YouTube is testing or changing the navigation treatment.
Check the upload’s visibility and classification in Studio, then view the channel while signed out or from another current client. YouTube’s wording is intentionally conditional: tabs vary by channel and content, so one upload should not be treated as a guaranteed, permanent trigger.
Shorts classification can explain unexpected placement
A creator cannot always decide whether a vertical upload is treated as a regular video. Under YouTube’s current rule for standard channels, square or vertical videos up to three minutes long uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 can be categorized as Shorts. Official Artist Channels have a different listed date: December 8, 2025. Therefore, check channel type, aspect ratio, duration, and upload date before diagnosing a missing or unexpected tab.

How livestreams appear—and why replays can show elsewhere
The Live view is intended for active, scheduled, and archived livestreams where applicable. After a stream ends, YouTube may also expose a replay or highlight as a video on the channel; it is not safe to assume every stream-related asset remains exclusively in Live. YouTube describes these visibility and replay behaviors at its live-stream help page.
Horizontal and vertical live formats
Eligible workflows can support simultaneous horizontal and vertical live versions using one stream URL and shared chat. The formats do not have identical capabilities:

These distinctions are documented at YouTube’s livestreaming help page. Vertical live can add Shorts-feed discovery, while horizontal live retains features such as clickable links, ads, 4K in the stated environment, Premieres, and Live Redirect.

How to connect Shorts with videos and livestreams
After uploading a Short, creators can attach a related video. The destination may be a Video, Short, or Live item, and viewers can open it from the Shorts player. Follow YouTube’s related-video instructions.
- Publish the long-form video or schedule the livestream.
- Create a Short that provides a real preview, highlight, answer, or hook.
- In the Short’s settings, choose the long-form video or livestream as the related video.
- Use the Short’s title and on-screen text to explain the connection.
Do not rely on pasted URLs in Shorts comments or descriptions: YouTube says those URLs are non-clickable. Use the related-video feature or channel profile links instead. Profile links can include up to 14 links, subject to applicable advanced-feature requirements; see YouTube’s link policy and placement guidance.
One channel or separate channels?
Separate tabs solve a browsing problem; they do not guarantee recommendation performance, monetization, or conversion from Shorts viewers to long-form viewers. Decide based on audience and operations.
One channel usually fits when
- All formats serve the same subject and audience.
- Shorts are clips, previews, or companion pieces to the main videos.
- Livestreams cover the same documentary, educational, or entertainment theme.
- You want one brand, subscriber base, and moderation workflow.
- You can keep the Home tab and publishing schedule coherent.
A separate channel may be justified when
- Formats target substantially different audiences or languages.
- A high-volume gaming or event archive overwhelms the main editorial channel.
- A VOD library has little value for the main audience.
- Brands, rights ownership, or editorial identities must remain separate.
- Publishing frequency and audience expectations are radically different.
- You have enough staff and production capacity to maintain another channel.
Practical diagnostic checklist
- Confirm the viewer is on the actual public channel page.
- Check whether the channel has a public Short, public long-form upload, or public/scheduled/archived livestream.
- Verify privacy, deletion, and restrictions in YouTube Studio.
- Check whether the suspected Short meets YouTube’s current format and date rules.
- Test another current browser, app, device, or signed-out session.
- Remember that Home customization and Studio Analytics do not create public content-type tabs.
You do not need a paid service to obtain these tabs. YouTube Studio is sufficient for channel layout and publishing; production tools such as OBS Studio, StreamYard, Restream, vidIQ, TubeBuddy, or CapCut can improve streaming, editing, or planning, but none replaces YouTube’s native channel-page behavior.
