Amazon Prime Video announced Video Recaps on November 19, 2025, as a limited U.S. beta for selected English-language Prime Originals. The feature assembled existing scenes, dialogue, music and sound effects into a short visual season summary with AI-generated narration. Within weeks, viewers reported serious chronology and story-interpretation errors in the Fallout recap, and reports on December 12 said Amazon had removed the recaps from test titles. No relaunch was established in the sources available through August 18, 2026.
What Amazon’s Video Recaps were supposed to do
Video Recaps were designed for a familiar problem: remembering an earlier season before starting the next one. Amazon described a system that identified important plot points and character arcs, selected footage, and arranged it with dialogue excerpts, music, sound effects and an AI-generated voiceover. This was AI-assisted assembly of a show’s existing material, not a tool that generated an entirely new episode or wholly synthetic video.
Amazon presented the feature as a visual companion to its existing text-based recap tools. The company’s launch description is available at Amazon’s Video Recaps announcement.
Launch, test and removal: the timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 4, 2024 | Amazon introduced X-Ray Recaps, its text-summary feature, in an earlier rollout. See Amazon’s original announcement. |
| November 19, 2025 | Amazon announced Video Recaps as a beta for selected U.S. English-language Prime Originals. |
| November–December 2025 | Viewers tested the feature on titles including Fallout and reported factual and interpretive mistakes. |
| December 12, 2025 | Engadget reported that the recaps had disappeared from several test titles, including Fallout, Bosch, Upload, The Rig and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. |
| Through August 18, 2026 | The sources reviewed did not confirm a relaunch. |
The reported title list is an observed test group, not an official catalog of every supported series. Engadget’s account of the withdrawal is at this report.

How viewers were meant to access a recap
Amazon’s launch-era workflow was:
- Open a supported Prime Original series.
- Go to the next season or the show’s title-detail page.
- Look for a recap button.
- Choose an offered format, such as Video Recaps or an X-Ray text recap.
Secondary reporting also described an Extras area on the web version of Prime Video. Labels and placement can vary by device, app version, account, title and server-side eligibility, so these are historical launch instructions rather than a promise that the button is available now.
Video Recaps versus X-Ray Recaps
| Video Recaps | X-Ray Recaps | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Visual summary with clips, dialogue, music, effects and AI narration | Generated text summary |
| Purpose | Catch up before a new season | Refresh a full season, episode or portion of an episode |
| Launch scope | U.S. beta for selected English-language Prime Originals | Supported Prime Video titles beginning in 2024 |
| Underlying inputs described by Amazon | Amazon explained the assembly workflow but did not publish a complete model-by-model architecture | Video segments, subtitles and dialogue analyzed to identify events, places, times, conversations, cliffhangers and character details |
Amazon says the X-Ray system combines Amazon Bedrock foundation models with custom models trained using Amazon SageMaker. Those technical details apply to X-Ray Recaps; Amazon did not publicly establish that every Video Recaps component used the same models. What went wrong with the Fallout recap
Viewers and technology and entertainment publications identified two especially consequential problems in the Fallout Season 1 recap:
- Material involving Cooper Howard’s flashbacks was reportedly assigned to the 1950s, although the relevant scenes occur in 2077.
- The recap reportedly portrayed the Season 1 finale exchange between The Ghoul and Lucy as a simple “die or join him” choice, flattening the meaning of the interaction.
These reports are documented by TechRadar and GamesRadar. Amazon’s announcement did not provide a detailed explanation of the mistakes or a public postmortem. The reported withdrawal followed the complaints, but a precise company-stated cause was not established.

Why fictional story recaps are a difficult AI problem
A recap has to preserve more than a list of visually prominent scenes. It must keep several kinds of context aligned:
- Chronology: flashbacks, historical scenes, nonlinear editing and multiple timelines must be placed correctly.
- Causality: showing two events is not enough; the summary must explain which event caused or motivated the other.
- Identity: similar-looking characters, voices and aliases can be confused.
- Motivation and ambiguity: a conditional offer, deception or unresolved clue should not become a definite fact.
- Spoiler boundaries: the recap must restore the previous season without revealing information reserved for a later one.
- Audio and visual alignment: narration, dialogue, music and clips need to describe the same moment.
A system may locate important footage and produce fluent narration while still misunderstanding when a scene occurs or what a character intended. The Fallout reports illustrate that distinction between multimodal extraction and reliable narrative understanding.

What the beta could have offered—and its trade-offs
Potential benefits
- Faster catch-up than rewatching an entire season.
- Visual context for plots that are difficult to reconstruct from a paragraph.
- A recap inside Prime Video rather than a search for an outside video.
- Convenience for viewers returning after a long break or with limited time.
Important limitations
- Human editorial review can be slower and costlier but allows checking scripts, continuity and intended meaning; automated assembly can scale faster while missing context.
- A concise summary can omit subtle clues, relationships and ambiguity.
- Official footage, branding and a confident synthetic voice can make a wrong claim look authoritative.
- Amazon described X-Ray Recaps as spoiler-conscious, but the Video Recaps announcement did not publish a detailed spoiler-control method.
- The quality challenge is separate from whether a synthetic voice sounds pleasant or distracting.
How to use any recap safely
If Video Recaps reappear, treat one as a convenience rather than the final authority on a story.
- Check important dates, identities and motivations against the original episodes or a reputable human-written recap.
- Be especially cautious with shows containing flashbacks, dreams, hallucinations, unreliable narrators, alternate timelines or anthology formats.
- Do not assume that a recap covers every critical setup event simply because it includes dramatic scenes.
- If a recap button appears but produces nothing, updating the app or trying the web interface or another supported device may help; availability can also be controlled by title, account, region or a server-side beta switch.
- Do not buy Prime membership or a new Fire TV device solely for this feature while its availability is unconfirmed.
Current status
Amazon’s Video Recaps were a narrow U.S. beta announced in November 2025, not a catalog-wide or worldwide Prime Video capability. Reports in December 2025 said Amazon removed or paused the feature after viewers found errors in the Fallout recap. The available sources do not establish permanent cancellation, but they also do not confirm a relaunch. Until Amazon publishes a new announcement or the feature is visibly restored for a viewer’s account and title, it is most accurate to describe Video Recaps as a beta that was pulled or paused.
