YouTube Premium Lite did not newly launch in France and Singapore in August 2026. The two countries were included in YouTube’s staged international expansion announced on July 28–29, 2025. Both remain on YouTube’s current Premium Lite availability list. In 2026, the cheaper tier also gained background play and downloads for most eligible videos, but it is still not an all-YouTube, ad-free subscription.
What launched, and when?
Premium Lite began as an earlier European test before YouTube announced a wider expansion in 2025. The March 5, 2025 announcement covered additional markets and gave a U.S. reference price of $7.99 per month. A staged expansion announced on July 28–29, 2025 added France, Singapore and other countries; rollout was progressive, so availability did not necessarily appear for every account at once. YouTube’s current availability guidance lists both France and Singapore. Check your own account at youtube.com/premiumlite, because eligibility depends on location, billing profile and platform. The current country list is at YouTube Help.

The February feature release rolled out over following weeks, so the announcement date does not guarantee that every account received the controls immediately.

What Premium Lite includes in 2026
- Fewer interruptions on most eligible videos: ordinary creator and informational categories such as gaming, fashion, beauty, news and similar programming generally receive ad-free playback or fewer platform-served interruptions.
- Background play: an eligible video can continue while you use another app or turn off a mobile screen.
- Downloads: eligible videos or playlists can be saved for offline viewing in supported YouTube apps.
- Device coverage: the membership can be used on supported mobile, computer and television devices, including YouTube Kids where supported.
“Most eligible” is important. YouTube’s feature details and comparison chart are maintained at YouTube Help. Rights, regional restrictions, content classification and account status can prevent a particular video from offering playback or download controls.
Where ads and interruptions remain
Music and music-related videos
Premium Lite does not make music content universally ad-free. Ads or feature restrictions can apply to official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, covers, dance videos and videos containing music-partner material. A documentary with a licensed soundtrack may therefore be treated differently from a spoken-word creator video. Shorts
Shorts can still contain ads, and Shorts are among the formats for which Premium Lite background play and downloads may not apply.

Search, browsing and feeds
Paid playback benefits do not remove every promoted placement while searching, browsing or viewing feeds. Seeing a sponsored result or other advertising surface does not by itself mean the membership has failed.

A membership cannot remove a sponsorship recorded into the video itself. Host-read promotions, product placements and other material edited into a documentary or creator upload remain part of that program.
Premium Lite versus full YouTube Premium

Premium Lite is not a discounted YouTube Music plan. People who mainly listen to albums, mixes, music videos or playlists should compare full Premium, which includes YouTube Music Premium, rather than treating Lite as a music subscription.

Price and signup in France or Singapore
The $7.99 figure was the U.S. reference price announced in March 2025. It is not a verified France or Singapore price. Local charges can differ by country, taxes, billing platform and account eligibility. Open youtube.com/premiumlite while signed in to see the price applicable to your account.
Do not use third-party price lists or convert the U.S. figure into euros or Singapore dollars as if it were a local quote. YouTube’s official page is the authoritative checkout.
Which plan fits your viewing?
Choose Premium Lite if you mainly watch creator or documentary videos
Lite is suited to viewers who watch tutorials, commentary, gaming, cooking, news or documentaries and want fewer interruptions without paying for a music service. The 2026 addition of background play and downloads makes it more useful for eligible spoken-word and non-music viewing.

Choose full YouTube Premium if music is central
Full Premium is the stronger fit if you regularly listen to music, need downloads or background play for music content, want the broadest ad-free coverage, or value the complete set of Premium conveniences.
Stay with free YouTube if you watch occasionally
Occasional viewers may prefer accepting ads rather than adding a recurring bill, particularly if offline viewing and background playback are unimportant.

- Select Upgrade beside the desired Premium membership and confirm.
- To cancel, select Manage membership, then Deactivate.
- Select Continue to cancel, choose a reason and select Yes, cancel.
If ads, downloads or background play do not behave as expected
Ads still appear
- Check whether the video is music-related or a Short.
- Distinguish a feed or search promotion from an ad inside playback.
- Remember that creator-read sponsorships are embedded in the program.
- Confirm the correct Google account and active membership at paid memberships.
Background play is unavailable
Test a non-music, non-Short video in an updated supported YouTube or YouTube Kids app. Music-partner content, account problems and an incomplete rollout can also explain a missing control.
Downloads are unavailable
Rights restrictions, music classification, Shorts, regional rules or membership status can block offline saving. YouTube may also require periodic reconnection to validate offline access.
Travel and country rules
YouTube says memberships should be used predominantly in the country where they were purchased. Misrepresenting location or using a VPN to bypass availability can lead to cancellation; do not treat a foreign subscription as a legitimate savings method. If you travel to a country where Premium or Premium Lite is unavailable, downloaded videos may remain available offline for 30 days, according to YouTube’s travel guidance.
Bottom line for France and Singapore
France and Singapore joined Premium Lite in the July 2025 expansion, not through a new August 2026 launch. In 2026 the plan is a more capable lower-cost tier because most eligible videos can now support downloads and background play. It remains best for non-music creator and documentary viewing, while full YouTube Premium is the better choice for music listeners or anyone who expects consistently broad ad-free coverage.
