YouTube announced two AI features on May 19, 2026, but they do not share the same access rules. Ask YouTube, a conversational video-search experiment, initially requires Premium and is limited to U.S. users aged 18 or older. Gemini Omni-powered Shorts remixing is rolling out at no cost. The announcement describes Ask YouTube’s Premium restriction as an initial test, not a permanent limit on the feature.

YouTube’s May 19, 2026 announcement says Ask YouTube is intended to roll out broadly to all users later. Availability can change as experiments and rollouts progress, so these are launch-period terms.
What Ask YouTube does
Ask YouTube is a video-discovery tool for queries that may take more than a short keyword search. You might ask for advice on teaching a child to ride a bike, or look for creator reviews of cozy games. It gathers relevant long-form videos and Shorts into a structured response, then lets you refine the search with follow-up questions.
That makes it a search and discovery feature, rather than a general-purpose chatbot. YouTube’s announcement does not establish that answers are always accurate or that they are generated solely from video content. Treat the response as a way to explore videos, not as a guarantee that the videos agree or that the summary is authoritative.

Who can try it initially
- You need to be signed in to a YouTube Premium account.
- The account holder must be at least 18.
- The announced initial test is limited to the United States.
- Access is through YouTube’s experimental-features page, and may depend on whether the test is enabled for your account.
YouTube did not specify whether every Premium plan, family or student account, or managed account qualifies. Premium status alone therefore does not guarantee access.
How to look for Ask YouTube
- Sign in to the YouTube account with Premium and confirm the account holder meets the age requirement.
- Open youtube.com/new and look for Ask YouTube.
- Follow any on-screen instructions to join or activate the experiment.
- Return to YouTube and check the search experience for the Ask YouTube interface.
The announcement confirms the experimental page as the access route, but does not promise a universal button location across devices. If you meet the stated criteria and still do not see the experiment, check that you are using the correct signed-in account and refresh or update the app or browser session. Access may not have reached your account; a restricted or supervised account, a changed or ended experiment, or a later rollout may also explain the difference.

What Gemini Omni remixing does
Gemini Omni powers a creation feature in YouTube Shorts Remix and YouTube Create. On an eligible Short, users can supply a prompt and images to change the scene, add elements, or give it a different visual style while drawing on the original video’s context. YouTube’s examples include shifting a scene to a 1990s-style setting or placing yourself alongside a creator. Google describes Gemini Omni as a multimodal model that can take combinations of text, images, video, and audio and edit video in response to conversational instructions; that broader model description does not mean every input is available in every YouTube workflow.

The feature is also being introduced through YouTube Create, which YouTube describes as a free editing and publishing app for Shorts and longer videos. Its tools include effects, filters, transitions, music, captions, audio cleanup, and direct publishing. The announcement says Gemini Omni remixing is rolling out at no cost; it does not describe YouTube Premium as a requirement.
Creator attribution, remix controls, and AI labels
YouTube says Omni-remixed Shorts include digital watermarks, identifying metadata, and a link back to the original video. Creators can opt out of visual remixing in Shorts. These measures provide attribution and controls, but they do not establish that the original creator endorsed a remix, that every viewer will see the same attribution, or that watermarking resolves copyright or likeness disputes.

Google says videos created with Gemini Omni include an imperceptible SynthID watermark. That is a provenance signal, not necessarily a visible on-screen notice or a prominent “AI-generated” badge. The announcement does not say every viewer will see an audience-facing label.
YouTube also announced an expansion of its likeness-detection tool to all creators aged 18 and older. This is a separate creator-protection measure, not an access requirement for Ask YouTube or Gemini Omni remixing.

What the features could mean for viewers and creators
For viewers
Conversational search could make it easier to explore a complicated viewing goal and refine it without repeatedly rewriting search terms. But any system that curates videos can shape what people find: results may reflect YouTube’s interpretation of a query, and a compact response may make disagreement among source videos less obvious. These are reasonable risks to watch for, not outcomes YouTube has established.
For creators
Prompt-driven remixing may lower the effort needed to experiment with visual ideas or join a trend, including through a mobile creation workflow. It may also increase competition for attention and make a creator’s style or likeness easier to imitate. Attribution and opt-out controls are relevant safeguards, but the announcement does not show how effectively they prevent confusion or low-effort imitation in practice.
Should you pay for YouTube Premium?
Premium may be worth considering if you already value benefits such as ad-free viewing, background play, offline downloads, and YouTube Music Premium, as well as the chance to try Ask YouTube during its initial test. YouTube’s Premium overview also distinguishes Premium from the lower-cost Premium Lite tier. If your only goal is Gemini Omni-assisted Shorts creation, the announcement gives no reason to buy Premium: YouTube describes that rollout as free. YouTube Create is likewise described as free, though advanced desktop editing needs may call for a different workflow. Google AI subscriptions are separate products; Google says Omni is also rolling out through the Gemini app and Google Flow for subscribers, but those plans are not presented as prerequisites for the YouTube remix tools.
