YouTube’s new Hide control lets viewers dismiss end-screen overlays during the current video. Selecting Hide removes recommendation tiles, subscribe prompts, playlists, and other end-screen elements from the player; Show restores them. The choice applies only to that video session—it is not a permanent account-wide setting.
Creators can still use end screens, watermarks, and YouTube Studio’s existing tools. YouTube says a global mobile experiment conducted from March through July 2025 produced a decrease of less than 1.5% in end-screen views, although that aggregate result is not a forecast for every channel.
What changed with YouTube’s Hide button?
When an eligible video reaches its end-screen period, YouTube may display a Hide control in the upper-right area of the video player. Viewers who select it can watch the final moments without the creator’s end-screen overlay covering part of the image.

YouTube announced the change in its Help Community on September 24, 2025, and published a creator-facing explanation on December 17, 2025. The company said the option responds to viewer feedback from people who found end screens distracting or obstructive. A separate desktop watermark-hover Subscribe change was discussed around the announcement, but it is unrelated to the core Hide function.
YouTube’s creator announcement and its Help Community post are the authoritative sources for the rollout and its current-video behavior.
How viewers hide and restore an end screen
- Open a video that contains an end screen.
- Continue watching until the end-screen elements appear.
- Select or tap Hide in the player’s upper-right area.
- The end-screen overlay disappears for the current video.
- Select or tap Show if you want the recommendations or subscription prompt back.
Hiding the overlay does not stop the video from ending. It also does not create a permanent “never show end screens” preference. Viewers who want an unobstructed ending on another video may need to select Hide again.
The exact label, position, timing, and presentation can vary by device, app version, account, player layout, and rollout status. If the button is missing, the video may not have an end screen, the playback context may not support end screens, or the account may not yet have the same interface.
When end screens are unavailable
YouTube’s Help documentation lists several contexts where end screens are unavailable, including:
- Mobile web, with an iPad mobile-web exception noted by YouTube.
- YouTube Music.
- YouTube Kids.
- 360-degree videos.
- Videos marked Made for Kids.
Short videos also have a basic eligibility limit: a video must be at least 25 seconds long to use an end screen. Availability should not be confused with the YouTube mobile app; the mobile website and native apps are different playback environments.

What YouTube end screens do
End screens are interactive elements that can appear during the final 5 to 20 seconds of an eligible video. Depending on eligibility and availability, creators can use them to promote:

- Another video.
- A playlist.
- A subscribe action.
- Another channel.
- An external website for eligible YouTube Partner Program creators.
- Merchandise or other supported channel destinations where available.
A standard 16:9 video can contain up to four elements. Other aspect ratios may allow fewer. YouTube also lets creators control when individual elements appear within the end-screen period, rather than forcing every element to appear at exactly the same moment.
End screens are distinct from YouTube’s homepage recommendations, search results, cards, advertisements, and every other “Up next” or post-video recommendation surface. Hiding an end screen should therefore be understood narrowly: it dismisses the creator-configured overlay in the current player, not YouTube’s recommendation system as a whole.

What creators need to know
End screens have not been removed
Creators can continue adding end screens and watermarks in YouTube Studio. There is no reason to remove every end screen as a blanket response to this feature.

- It is YouTube’s own aggregate experiment result.
- It concerns a global mobile experiment.
- It measures end-screen views, not total channel views, watch time, revenue, or subscriptions.
- It is not a guaranteed loss for an individual channel or video format.
A documentary channel with long-form interviews, a tutorial channel with a visual reveal, and a serialized entertainment channel may see very different effects. YouTube’s reported average is useful context, not a channel-specific benchmark.
What the feature may signal
A viewer who hides an end screen may simply want to see credits, a final reaction, a demonstration, a subtitle, or an important closing shot without obstruction. That does not necessarily mean the viewer dislikes the channel or will not watch another video.
It does suggest that the final seconds should be designed deliberately. An end screen that competes with the most important visual information gives viewers a reason to remove it. A clean, relevant, well-timed end screen gives viewers who keep it visible a clearer path to the next piece of content.
How creators should redesign—or audit—their end screens
1. Protect the important ending
Review the final 20 seconds of your videos and ask whether the overlay covers any essential material:
- The conclusion or result of an experiment.
- A speaker’s final statement.
- A documentary subject’s reaction.
- Credits or required explanatory text.
- A product demonstration or visual comparison.
- The final reveal, punchline, or key image.
Where possible, finish the critical explanation before the end-screen window begins. Another option is to use a clean branded outro or neutral background during the final 5–20 seconds. If the story must continue underneath the overlay, compose the shot so the subject and essential text remain visible.
2. Use fewer, more relevant elements
Four available slots do not mean four elements are always desirable. Consider testing:

- One highly relevant follow-up video and a subscribe element.
- A playlist for a serialized documentary or course.
- Best for viewer when the audience has varied interests.
- A specific sequel when the next episode is an obvious continuation.
- A channel promotion only when cross-channel discovery is genuinely useful.
Relevance matters more than filling every available position. A viewer deciding whether to continue a story usually benefits more from a clearly related next video than from several competing destinations.

3. Stage the elements
YouTube allows individual end-screen elements to have different start times. A practical sequence might leave the final shot unobstructed briefly, then introduce a related recommendation and subscription prompt. This is not a YouTube requirement, but it can reduce the conflict between a satisfying ending and a navigation prompt.
4. Make the call to action specific
Explain what the viewer will get by clicking instead of using only a generic “watch more” message. For example:
- “Watch the follow-up test.”
- “Start the beginner version.”
- “Open the full interview playlist.”
- “Continue with the next episode.”
A short spoken or on-screen cue can make the remaining end-screen opportunity more useful without pressuring viewers who prefer an unobstructed ending.

Do not judge the impact from one upload or from a short period with unusual traffic. Compare a consistent set of videos and time periods, accounting for format, audience, device mix, and traffic source.

Content → select the video → Analytics → Engagement → End screen element click rate
Useful measures include:
- End-screen element click rate.
- Views attributed to end screens.
- Clicks by element type.
- Audience retention during the final 20 seconds.
- Average view duration.
- Continuation into another video or playlist.
- Subscriptions associated with the video, where available in Studio reporting.
- Performance by device, geography, traffic source, and video format when the sample is large enough.
At channel level, Studio reports such as Top end screen element types and Top videos by end screen can show which designs and destinations perform best. End-screen traffic can also appear as a traffic-source category in the Reach tab. YouTube does not document a universal Studio metric showing which viewers pressed Hide, so creators should not assume that a dedicated Hide-button report exists.

The official material does not establish that pressing Hide directly penalizes a viewer or creator, changes channel ranking, affects monetization eligibility, or alters recommendations by itself.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: Hide changes whether the current viewer sees the end-screen overlay. That viewer may have fewer opportunities to click an end-screen element, while YouTube says its aggregate experiment showed an end-screen-view decline of less than 1.5%. There is no supported basis for claiming a direct monetization penalty or an algorithmic punishment.
Common misunderstandings

Bottom line for viewers and creators
Viewers now have a quick way to clear end-screen overlays when they interfere with the final seconds, but the choice is temporary and video-specific. Creators do not need to abandon end screens. They should instead treat the outro as part of the edit: protect the important ending, reduce competing elements, make recommendations specific, and use Studio analytics to determine what works for their audience.
