Choose OBS self-hosting if you want direct control and are prepared to operate the computer, encoder, network connection, and recovery process continuously. Choose a managed cloud service if you want uploaded videos to run as a continuous YouTube stream without keeping your own computer on. Neither option is automatically more reliable or cheaper: the right choice depends on who will maintain the stream, how much control you need, and how you will handle recordings and archives.
How the two approaches work
Self-hosting with OBS
OBS is the software-encoder route: you provide the video or scene, configure YouTube as the destination, then keep the source, OBS, the computer or server, and the network path operating. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. A local computer keeps the equipment close to you; a rented VPS moves the machine off-site, but you still manage the encoder and its continuous operation.
For a 24/7 channel, self-hosting also means planning for monitoring, maintenance, restarts, network interruptions, and any local recording or archive you need. Managed cloud streaming

Configure YouTube correctly whichever route you choose
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key and server URL. Enter these in the encoder or service connection settings. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Select an output profile for the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by resolution and frame rate, so use its current table rather than relying on a single bitrate for every video. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Confirm the encoder or service is using the server address and connection settings shown for your stream.
- Start a test stream and check the live preview before relying on an unattended setup. Confirm the correct video and audio are present, the picture is stable, and the stream appears on the intended YouTube channel.

Plan for YouTube archiving and content rights
Do not rely on one 24/7 archive
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous broadcast lasting longer than that is not covered by the same stated automatic-archive threshold, so do not assume a full day-long stream will be retained as one archive. If you need a durable copy, arrange a separate recording or storage plan and verify the current YouTube handling before you go live.
Check rights and channel rules before looping content
Using a live encoder or cloud service does not grant rights to the videos, music, images, or other material you stream. Confirm you have permission for the content and understand YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies. A continuous loop is a delivery method, not a guarantee of monetization, eligibility, watch time, or revenue.

Operational trade-offs and cost
What self-hosting costs you in responsibility
OBS can avoid a separate managed-streaming service if you already have suitable equipment, but “free software” does not mean a cost-free 24/7 operation. Consider electricity, hardware wear, a stable network connection, time spent monitoring, and any VPS or storage charges. Moving OBS to a VPS changes where the computer runs; it does not make the stream provider-managed.
What a cloud service changes
A managed service shifts the always-on compute workflow away from your home computer. You trade some operational control for a provider’s workflow and terms. Do not assume that either choice saves money or guarantees uptime without comparing your actual equipment, electricity, compute, storage, service duration, and maintenance needs.
