To run a YouTube news ticker over looping video, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, then check the moving ticker, video, and audio in Live Control Room before going live. Use bitrate settings your upload connection can sustain. A 24/7 transmission also needs a plan for restarting and preserving archives: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, not an indefinite broadcast.
What you need for a 24/7 ticker stream
You need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, an encoder that can combine the looping video and ticker, the video files you intend to play, and a reliable upload connection. The encoder sends the finished picture and audio to YouTube; YouTube then distributes the stream to viewers. You do not need to buy a hardware encoder specifically for this workflow: YouTube’s setup instructions require an encoder connection, not a particular device.
- A stream plan: decide whether to use one horizontal output or also prepare a vertical version, and whether you will run one long transmission or restart it in archive-friendly segments.
- Looping video and ticker content: prepare footage you have permission to use and current, accurate ticker text. Choose how the ticker updates and who checks it.
- Encoder and upload capacity: choose the resolution and frame rate to match what your connection can sustain, then test with representative motion and audio.
- YouTube Live Control Room access: you will copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder.
YouTube’s official encoder guidance covers protocols, codecs, bitrate, keyframes, preview, and stream health. It does not prescribe a ticker generator, exact placement, font size, or loop length, so those are production choices to validate in your own output.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
Treat YouTube’s published values as ingest recommendations, not a promise that your connection can continuously deliver them. Test upload capacity under the conditions in which the stream will run, with the same sort of movement and audio as the real programme. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

| Setting | Practical choice | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS where supported | YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; RTMPS encrypts the connection. |
| Video codec | H.264 is a common compatibility choice | YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1. Confirm your encoder and workflow support the codec you choose. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s guidance lists constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Use a rate appropriate to the source material and sustainable upload bitrate. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 | Check that the audio is present and at an appropriate level in the preview. |
Selected H.264 bitrate recommendations published by YouTube Help and accessed in 2026:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the listed H.264 combinations, not minimums for every stream or guarantees of stable delivery. For other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates, check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate chart. Leave connection headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured upload capacity; congestion or variation can otherwise interrupt delivery.

Build and connect the stream
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, audience and privacy details. If it is scheduled, share the watch-page URL with viewers who need advance notice. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in your encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as like a password and address. Treat it as a credential: do not put it on screen, in public notes, or in a shared document. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select the protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval, and audio format. Start with the settings above only if your encoder supports them and your upload connection can sustain the chosen output.
- Assemble the picture and sound. Put the ticker and looping video into the encoder workflow. Check ticker spelling, contrast, size, scroll speed, timing, and placement against the background. Watch several loop transitions, not only the first frame. Confirm there is no unintended black or silent gap at the end of a clip or between repeats.
- Start the encoder and wait for preview. Check the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page using the devices and layouts your audience is likely to use. Confirm that the picture is moving, the ticker remains legible, and audio is present if intended.
- Go live and monitor. Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview and stream health are satisfactory. Keep monitoring the stream and the actual watch page for dropped connection, frozen video, missing ticker text, or audio problems.
YouTube’s event tips suggest setting up an encoder two hours before a scheduled event and starting it 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations for scheduled events, not a guarantee that a 24/7 stream will stay uninterrupted.
Make the ticker and loop readable in the real output
A ticker that looks clear in an editor can become difficult to read after scaling, cropping, or viewing on a phone. Use the preview and watch page as the final check; YouTube does not publish a ticker-specific safe-area measurement or required text size.

- Use strong contrast between the ticker text and its background. Check it over both bright and dark parts of the loop.
- Keep text away from edges and important visual details. Avoid placing it where platform controls or a crop could obscure it.
- Read the ticker at the speed it will run on a phone-sized screen. Shorter items and pauses between updates can be easier to follow than dense, continuous copy.
- Inspect the point where the video repeats. Look for abrupt cuts, a black frame, a jump in audio, or a ticker reset that could appear as a fault.
- If you offer both horizontal and vertical presentations, inspect each output separately. YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live formats and layout options; a third-party encoder can send dual streams using their corresponding keys. A placement that works in one crop may not work in the other.
For news content, establish a process for updating and checking ticker items. Correctness, attribution, and timing matter as much as animation: an unattended loop can continue showing an outdated headline after circumstances change.
Choose viewer controls and archive handling
Latency, DVR, and automation
Live Control Room provides settings for latency, DVR, privacy, and auto-start or auto-stop. Choose privacy to match whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private. Lower latency can reduce the delay for viewers but may increase buffering; test it against the stability your audience needs. DVR allows viewers to pause and resume the live stream. Auto-start and auto-stop affect how the stream begins and ends, so test their behavior with your encoder before relying on them for unattended operation. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Plan for segments, not one indefinite archive
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That makes a 24/7 transmission different from one continuous replay. The official setup guidance does not promise that an indefinite stream will be archived seamlessly, nor does it specify a seamless restart method for continuous broadcasts.
If you need watchable recordings, plan how the stream will end and restart before reaching the documented under-12-hour archive condition, and how you will label and share the resulting segments. Test the chosen restart and archive workflow before relying on it. A continuous channel presence and a single uninterrupted replay are separate requirements.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or the encoder is not sending | Compare the encoder fields with the current details in Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is started, and wait for preview. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Frequent buffering, dropped frames, or unstable picture | Chosen bitrate exceeds what the upload connection can sustain, or the connection varies | Test upload capacity during representative conditions and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as needed. Recheck stream health after changing settings. |
| Ticker is clipped or hard to read | Text is too close to an edge, too small, low contrast, or affected by a vertical crop | Adjust placement, size, contrast, and speed; inspect the actual preview and watch page in every intended output format and on a small screen. |
| Loop shows a black frame, jump, or silence | Clip boundaries, transitions, or audio do not join cleanly | Watch multiple complete repetitions in the live output. Adjust the loop or transition and check audio at each boundary. |
| Viewers report delay or buffering | Latency setting may trade delay for buffering tolerance, or the incoming stream is unstable | Test a different latency setting and monitor stream health; select the balance that works for the audience and connection. |
| Expected archive is missing or incomplete | The broadcast exceeded the documented automatic archive duration or ended unexpectedly | Do not assume an indefinite 24/7 transmission becomes one complete replay. Review the broadcast duration and plan shorter segments and a tested restart/archive process. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before looping any footage, music, or graphics, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for live streaming and replay. A video being available online does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. For a news ticker, verify that headlines and supporting images are accurate and that any third-party material is cleared for the intended use.
Also consider whether a long-running stream offers original, meaningful value rather than repeating material without context. This article does not establish a particular YouTube monetization outcome for a ticker or loop; review YouTube’s current channel and content policies for your situation. Keep records of licenses and permissions and remove or replace material if its rights change.
