The “incest” line in Warehouse 13’s “Savage Seduction” is a joke inside a telenovela plot. It does not state that Pete and Myka are related in the show’s main continuity. Charlie Jane Anders, writing for Gizmodo on May 6, 2014, read the episode as a wink at viewers who had been shipping the two agents, and argued that the joke exposes how odd a sudden romance between them would feel after years of working together like siblings.
What “Savage Seduction” does
The episode pulls Pete, Myka, and Artie into a Spanish-language telenovela. Inside that fictional story, each of them has a counterpart, and the show plays the genre’s conventions for laughs. Anders’s article covers the episode’s key beats:
- Pete and Myka’s counterparts, Armando and Maribel, are presented as secretly in love.
- Artie’s counterpart is the Colonel, who turns out to be the father of both Armando and Maribel.
- The Colonel tells the pair they cannot be together because it would be incest. Anders describes their apparent shock as part of the gag.
- Near the end, Pete’s former girlfriend Kelly tells him their relationship failed because he was in love with Myka. Anders reports that Pete seems surprised.
Why the family reveal exists
The joke belongs to the telenovela counterparts
The literal family relationship is a feature of the telenovela, not of the agents we know from the series. Armando and Maribel are siblings within that plot, so their romance is incestuous there. Because the plot mirrors the main characters’ faces and roles, the gag asks viewers to notice the comparison without asserting that the original characters share a bloodline.
Why the mirror is funny to fans
The telenovela premise turns a pairing that many viewers had imagined into something the show can openly mock. Anders suggests that by making the counterparts siblings, the episode gives a wink to fans who ship Pete and Myka, and shows how the idea looks when it is pushed into a melodramatic frame.

Anders’s reading: the main pairing as a sibling-like bond
The more pointed part of the article is Anders’s argument about the series itself. In her reading, the show has consistently presented Pete and Myka as close colleagues with a sibling-like bond, and Artie often fills a parental role. The article uses the phrase “like brother and sister” for their dynamic and calls Artie their “father.” These are the author’s comparisons, not literal relationships established in the show.
The opening of the piece makes her position plain: “Thank goodness Warehouse 13 recognizes that putting Pete and Myka together romantically would be a terrible mistake.” That line is Anders’s judgment, and it is the basis for the headline’s blunt phrasing.

What Kelly’s line adds
Kelly’s remark that Pete was in love with Myka is the episode’s one moment that points toward a real romantic subtext in the main story rather than in the telenovela. Anders notes Pete’s surprise at the suggestion, which makes it a comic beat as well as a hint. The article does not claim that the episode confirms an attraction between the main characters.
What is and is not established
- Established by the article: the plot details above, the telenovela family reveal, and Anders’s reading of the sibling comparison.
- Not established: that Pete and Myka are related in the main continuity. The incest line applies only to the fictional counterparts.
- Not established: that the writers or producers intended this reading. The article does not quote anyone involved in making the show explaining the episode’s purpose, so the interpretation is Anders’s.
