The medical examiner classified the cause of death as gunshot wounds of the head, neck, and torso, and the manner of death as homicide.
How many times was Young Dolph shot?
The autopsy count is 22. The Daily Memphian, in a March 15, 2022 article by Yolanda Jones headlined “Young Dolph shot 22 times, according to autopsy,” reported the figure. A March 28, 2022 Commercial Appeal story, republished by Yahoo, reported the same count and said the autopsy report had been obtained through a public-records request.
Both articles attribute the number to the autopsy report. This article does the same. It does not present the count as the result of an independent review of the report, because no such review has been published.
What the medical examiner concluded
The examiner’s conclusion, as reproduced by UTHSC News in a media roundup, reads: “With consideration of the investigation and the autopsy findings, the cause of death is Gunshot Wounds of the Head, Neck, and Torso and the manner of death is homicide.”
#1 Best Overall
Cause of death
The cause is recorded as gunshot wounds of the head, neck, and torso. The report’s wound-level detail is not reproduced in the reporting used here, and this article does not describe it further.
Manner of death
The manner is recorded as homicide. The examiner’s conclusion does not name the individual examiner in the excerpt that circulates, so this article does not attribute the conclusion to a named person.

The killing in brief

How the autopsy figures reached the public

|---|---|---|
| November 17, 2021 | Young Dolph is killed at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis | Yahoo/Commercial Appeal coverage |
| March 15, 2022 | Autopsy count of 22 reported in “Young Dolph shot 22 times, according to autopsy” | Daily Memphian, Yolanda Jones |

Why some reports say “about 20 times”
Not every later account uses the same figure. Coverage of court proceedings in a separate case uses different wording, and readers may see both forms.

| Wording | Where it appears | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| “22 times” | Daily Memphian, Commercial Appeal/USA Today Network, and a later article on a trial sentencing | The exact count attributed to the autopsy report |
| “about 20 times” | Associated Press coverage of a separate defendant’s acquittal | An approximation in a different context, not a revised autopsy count |
When citing the figure, use “22” with attribution to the autopsy report. Keep “about 20” as a separate, approximate description tied to the article in which it appears.
What the autopsy count does not establish
- Who fired the shots, how many people were involved, or what the shooter’s intent was.
- The order of the wounds or how the shooting unfolded.
- Ballistic findings, such as the number of rounds fired or the types of firearms used.
- Whether the number of wounds equals the number of rounds fired. Reporting uses “shot” and “wounds” interchangeably, but a wound count and a shot count are different measurements.
Limits of the source material
Copies of the autopsy report have circulated on websites that are not official government or institutional domains. The figures in this article rest on news reporting of the report and on UTHSC News’s reproduction of the examiner’s conclusion. They do not rest on an independent authentication of those online copies.
Rank #4
Readers who want to verify the count should check the autopsy report through the appropriate Tennessee or Shelby County records channel, or read the original Daily Memphian and Commercial Appeal stories, which cite the report directly.
The coverage of this autopsy is limited to the wound count, the cause and manner of death, and the public-records route by which the report became available. Beyond those points, any claim about the case should be checked against court records or verified reporting.
Best Value
The published figures appear in the sources listed above, dated as shown. Later coverage may report them differently, so the dates matter when you cite them.
