What happened to Rajab Butt at Karachi City Court?
On Monday, December 29, 2025, Butt appeared at Karachi City Courts for proceedings on his bail plea. Dawn reported that he was physically assaulted on the court premises. The Express Tribune described the alleged assault as taking place after the hearing, which ended without a substantive order. The reports differ in how they describe the sequence, so the safest account is that the incident was reported at the court after Butt’s appearance.
Dawn described video showing Butt moving through a crowd with his shirt torn in places. His counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq, said the attack happened in his presence and that attempts to stop the beating did not succeed. Ashfaq also described it as a “life-threatening attack”; that was his allegation, not a court finding.
In Dawn’s December 29 report, Ashfaq said: “Taking the law into their hands is weakening the reputation of lawyers in the country.”

Why was Rajab Butt in court?
The hearing concerned Butt’s bail application in a separate case registered over alleged hurt to religious sentiments. It was not a hearing about the alleged assault at court. The Express Tribune reported that the additional district and sessions judge adjourned the bail proceedings without a substantive order. Geo News reported that Butt’s interim bail was extended until January 13, 2026, with the matter adjourned to that date.
What did the FIR allege?
Dawn reported on December 30 that police registered an FIR on the complaint of Butt’s counsel. It named Advocate Riaz Ali Solangi, Advocate Abdul Fatah, and “another 15-20 lawyers.” The figure refers to additional people named in the FIR as reported by Dawn; it does not establish how many people took part in the alleged assault.
The report said the FIR cited Pakistan Penal Code Sections 147, 148, 382, 506, and 337-A. These are provisions included in the reported FIR, not proof that the named people committed the alleged acts or were convicted.
What happened after the complaint?
On January 1, Dawn reported a separate police case following a complaint by City Courts SHO Jahangir Bhutto, who alleged that lawyers assaulted him after the case concerning Butt was registered. The same report described a lawyers’ strike and protest.
On January 2, Dawn reported that the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed concern. HRCP said: “The HRCP expresses grave concern over the reported physical assault on YouTuber Rajab Butt within the Karachi city court premises and the alleged involvement of members of the legal fraternity.”
A later Express Tribune report dated April 10, 2026, concerned the separate underlying case against Butt. It said the judge questioned missing evidence and ordered police to record Butt’s statement. That report does not resolve the allegations or investigation concerning the court assault.
